I had to laugh at another huge error of judgement by the Advertiser today.

They chuck a beat-up on the Crows saying they could win the Granny on the back page, and bury the all-important Prelim Final update about six pages in.

I haven't got the Tiser in front of me (used it when I went to the loo), but the headline said something like "Crows believe they can win the Grand Final". Now, I read the entire article and didn't find a single quote where a player said they thought they could win the Grand Final. Sure, they said there was a lot of belief within the club and that they were preparing for the finals. But that was it. I think that's what they call a beat-up.

I guess that's what happens when you've got some Kiwi sheila who knows sweet fa about footy as sports editor.

Crows believe they can win the premiership

THE "belief" factor at West Lakes has now reached an all-time high - the Crows can win the premiership.

Despite punters and some media continuing to underrate Adelaide's stunning resurgence this season, the playing group refuses to listen.

A gutsy win against another likely finals combatant - Sydney - for the second week in succession, has sent players' confidence levels soaring.

And with second spot almost certainly sewn up by an impressive 13-5 win-loss record, the Crows have their sights firmly set on achieving something special in 2005. "It was a great win obviously and it instilled a bit (more) belief within the group," Adelaide midfielder Scott Thompson said. "Everyone's had a lot of belief inside the group (already) and we expect to play finals football. We're there now so our focus is to make the top four.

"There's definitely a lot of excitement throughout the group at the moment."

Adelaide may be sitting two games clear in second position but TAB Sportsbet suggests the grand final will be contested between West Coast and St Kilda.

The Crows' premiership odds came in from $5.25 to $4.75 after victory on Saturday night but the Saints have shortened from $4.75 into $3.25 after their crushing round 18 win over Melbourne.

Coupled with Channel 9 commentator Jason McCartney revealing in The Advertiser last week that the media in Melbourne were not paying Adelaide any respect, and the Crows could have reason to doubt themselves.

"At the start of the season everyone had us down the bottom of the ladder so we've probably surprised a few people so far," Thompson admitted.

"(But) the belief within ourselves is there and that's all that matters."

Thompson's response is indicative of the Crows' attitude in their first full season under Neil Craig.

"I think it's the fact all the boys look up to him and respect him," Thompson said of Craig.

"Everything he seems to say, the boys listen to and take on board.

"It's a two-way street with him as well. You can go in and tell him if there's a problem and he'll sit there and listen."

With wins over the Kangaroos and the Swans in the past fortnight, the Crows have also demonstrated their ability to win in vastly different circumstances, which should hold them in good stead come September.

Against the 'Roos, they showcased their attacking game by triumphing in a see-sawing shoot-out which yielded 19 goals.

And in an intense battle to secure second spot, Adelaide beat Sydney at its own game in a low-scoring encounter which featured more tackles than points scored.

"It was a finals like atmosphere out there and to beat the Swans the way we did was terrific," Thompson said.

"They've (Sydney) been playing some great footy and are probably the form side in the league at the moment."
 
Thanks for that Adam. Now I'm not going crazy, am I? Scotty Thompson doesn't say anywhere that he thinks they can win the GF. He says there's a lot of belief at the club and they expect to play finals footy and are focusing on the top four. Perhaps there's a hidden message there somewhere, written in invisible ink. Or perhaps it's just a poxy sports editor trying to make the story something it isn't.

I wonder if that first paragraph is a Zac Millbank original or whether it's been doctored to fit what they wish they story said.

Headline should read "Advertiser wants Crows players to believe they can win the Grand Final".

They'd have a better chance of increasing sales if they produced accurate reports. I know it's all about the almighty dollar ... but treating all their readers like they're brainless surely can't win too many friends - or increase sales. I like to read footy stories - but I think the Tiser's recent efforts have been shocking at best. And it seems to coincide with their new sports editor.
 
It's funny isn't it ... the Advertiser editor relished putting the boots into the Crows - ably assisted by Rucci - and suddenly decides to jump on the bandwagon when he works out they are going to play in the finals. When I first saw the back page this morning I was ready to lynch the player who was talking about premierships. But Thompson or non one else at the club didn't say anything that could have been interpreted in this way. The headline looked as if had been written by someone who didn't read the story. Trash from a trash newspaper.

I'm not going to argue that I would prefer more accurate & higher quality articles, but unfortately they will continue with the headline grabbing stuff - whether it be bad/good - as long as it get's the buyers' attention. Unfortunate really.

I would hope all of them believe they can win the GF.
Any that don't should be traded to Port immediately.

Even throughout last year, when the Power were playing well, and the crows were playing poorly, the crows were favoured in the advertiser. They would get on the back and front page on weeks when the Power won, and they lost. It is a well known fact that the crows make up the majority of footy news in the tiser, no matter the weekends results.

yeh, weekly back and front page assasinations of the Crows coach no matter what the weekend results all bloody season. Believe me the crap we, and Gary Ayres received from the Advertiser for the one poor season we had last year absolutely dwarfs the minor critisism your coach has received for pretty much the same level of performance this season. Dont complain about the Advertiser not bagging your club and coach. They have been trying their best to avoid any negatives about Port all season, when by the standard they set last year, they should be tearing Mark Williams a new one on a daily basis.

When it comes to the Advertiser, from a Crows point of view, no news is good news.

Absolutely correct. This is why I no longer buy the rag. I wonder if people are finally getting sick of the paper as they seem to be doing an awful lot of big money promotions lately and spending a fortune on TV advertising with the "Win a BMW" etc. We are very poorly served by the media in this state, but it's our own fault because we just accept it. I live in hope that one day, we may get a serious newspaper back in this state again.

I think it's an issue of volume versus quality.

The volume of stories in the Advertiser caters for the majority of AFL fans here in Adelaide. We have around 70% of supporters here in Adelaide (according to the AFL), so you'd expect the volume of stories to be similar. When Port registers more than 20% of the AFL supporters in Adelaide in the next survey the AFL does, they can have an extra page.

The fact that the majority of those stories are sniping or just plain wrong is another issue.

Rubbish. Port and Crows generally always play on different days. The front and back page are determined by who played the day before.
 
Another Ruccisim you see in every second article re Andrew McLeod- " wants to win the brownlow medal he so silently craves". Errr if he "silently" craves it how does Rucc know he craves it at all. Pedantic I know, but you expect more from your Chief Football Writer who quite openly shows his disdain for the AFC and especially McLeod.
 
Hmm interesting journalism again from the advertiser today. They say that Macca wants to get into the midfield and they imply that he said that. From the press conference yesterday which was on the news you can hear the journo asking him about moving into the midfield and his reply was along the lines of yeah, maybe. Can't remember his exact quote, but the implication from the advertiser was very different from what my ears heard.....

I saw two different interviews Nikki and in one what you say is correct, but in the other he did say that now that Stiffy is back and that perhaps the coach will get to put him in the middle a bit more from now on and that would suit him.

I saw both of those too, I think the second one was where he elaborated a little bit from a further question by the press. But just my impression :)
