Toby Greene -- what... again?

Never started a thread before, and not even sure I'm doing it right. What I'm calling for comments on is... is it just me who's profoundly irritated by the AFL's complete failure to deal with that serial offender, face-kicking, eye-gouging Toby Greene?
I've just read the story on the Tribunal's craven acceptance of some sort of empty remorse plea by this tow rag after his blatant eye-gouging of Bontempelli. They over-politely decline to describe his offence for what it was, then they allow him to dodge any sort of meaningful questioning and punishment over it.
Afterwards, in exit interviews with media, he says: "I apologise to Marcus for my actions. Obviously, it was nervous times there and I'm extremely apologetic for what I did, but I can't wait to get out there this Saturday night." In other words: "The main thing is, I dodged a suspension... phew, that's the main thing."
Then this: "When asked if he would continue playing on the edge following the 17th charge of his career, Greene smiled and said: "I don't know, we'll wait and see what happens."" Translation: "I dunno... this hasn't really made any sort of impression on me and it looks like I can get away with just about anything, so, yeah, I probably will do it again."
Seriously, this egregiously violent, arrogant little twerp has a rap sheet longer than the Hume Highway. Have a look at this if in doubt -- about two-thirds of the way down the page, under the headline Toby's Track Record. Lingering in my mind, and perhaps others, is the suspicion that this set of circumstances has something to do with avoidance of a course of action that could make it harder for the AFL Pet Giants to win finals.
So Jaidyn Stephenson gets 10 weeks over $36 of bets -- all lost and then self-reported -- while Toby walks free for eye-gouging and can't guarantee that he won't do it again. Doesn't seem quite balanced. I wonder what Bontempelli thinks about it.
Get serious, AFL.

No suspicion in my mind whatsoever. The AFL has a long and clear history of meddling when it comes to the expansion clubs - all the way back to Paul Williams when he was playing for Sydney and the leading Brownlow fancy - he got reported for abusing an umpire which at the time was a mandatory 1 week suspension - so of course ineligibility for the chas. Guess what? The AFL stepped in and had his penalty dropped.

They've stepped in a number of times - always at the behest of an expansion club when it seemed their tilt at a flag or brownlow would be compromised.

Nik Nat is another instance - this guy is a great player but he has a history of poor behavior towards opponents and his last antic of pushing a player deliberately head first towards the fence is nothing short of reckless. Guess what - he gets a fine. What a friggin joke!

I'm absolutely sick to death of it, and all core clubs should also be. They and we are getting the rough end of the pineapple to keep GILS expansion dreams alive.

Two teams in Sydney??? FMD Sydney were the first expansion team and they STILL are not on a solid footing yet the AFL saw fit to add another.

GRRRRRRRRRRRR.

The difference (I'd like to think) between Maynard and Greene is that whilst they both have mean streaks, Toby crosses the line and ventures deep into the realm of the a*hole.

I don’t think it’s an expansion team thing ...

... rather I reckon it’s a finals series thing. The AFL genuinely want to put on the best show, and that means the best players playing during finals.

It’s not good for the game to have ...

* Phil Carman sitting in the stands during the 1977 Grand Final
* Jason Cloke sitting in the stands during the 2002 Grand Final
* Anthony Rocca sitting in the stands during the 2003 Grand Final

Times have changed.

These days they’ll only suspend players during finals if they’re forced to (Andrew Gaff)

I would be blind (pun intended) to when, where and by whom eye-gouging occurred. Finals, mid-season, JLT... gone for a year. FO.

Agreed, Toby is a franchise player and head office would be loathe to put on a show without him if they can prevent it. No excuse for eye gouging though, I'd be disappointed if any of our players stooped to that.

What Toby Greene did is one of the most horrendous acts in AFL history. Must have been 30 seconds footage of him eye gouging and pulling hair. Not just a split second of losing the plot. Bloke is a dog
I agree... that's absolutely the point. Vile.

Sorry 76 completely disagree - like I say the AFL has a long history of interference and its always at the behest of an expansion club.

Look above all else that fine for Nik Nat is FARCICAL.

The sight of a player propelled head first to an unyielding metallic structure completely out of control is both frightening and sickening.

This has NO PLACE in Australian sport . . . . NO PLACE WHATSOVER. A clear and video proven action of complete reckless disregard to a players head.

The penalty . . .

An outrageous travesty.

There is NO JUSTIFICATION for such meddling.

Toby joins an elite list of ‘endangered species’.
Garry Ablett Jnr

Barry Hall (allowed to play in a GF after clearly striking, 05/06, can’t recall which year)
Who else is on this list?

Surely you mean 'protected species' ? You can probably add Trent Cochin and Nic Nat to your list...

You are a guest here, act like one.

Unlike your mob we sometimes have thought for the good of the competition.

Toby Green is a turd with a long history of grubby, vicious and sniping behavior. For his own good and everyone elses good the AFL needs to stop protecting his vicious little arse. One of these days someone is going to lose an eye because of such behavior and the AFL will be responsible by protecting the practicers.

Goes all the way back to Paul Williams when he was playing for Sydney - charged for abusing an umpire which was a mandatory 1 week suspension.

Thing was . . .

Sydney was then their pet expansion darling and Paul was the leading fancy for the Chaz - the AFL stepped in and had it squashed - thus Paul got his Chaz.

All true right up to 'Paul got his Chaz'... regrettably not so...

I lost a slab

I bet he would get a minimum of two weeks
My mate said, never under estimate the AFL, he will get a slap on the wrist

I should have known better
Apparently the charge of unnecessary contact to the face carries a maximum penalty of one week.

The charge of eye gouging was never brought against him... presumably due to insufficient evidence.
