Don't know.

But what I do think is that Toby will be seriously annoyed that Michael Pettigrew got in first game and he (Toby) had to wait years!

Yeah, I see what you mean, and I hope to high heaven he doesn't become the next Guerra...

CHB and FBs don't need to be that fit do they?? :p

I think Wakelin has finally forced Choco's hand-at last. I hope Ebert gets an opportunity too soon.....

Unfortunate for Toby that when he was drafted he was meant to be a CHF, so he was directly up against Tredders and Chad, and was then regularly injured. Even last year when he could have played about 20 games, and Choco was in that mind, he only managed to stay fit for 10.

I don't recall Toby ever being seriously proposed as anything other than a backman actually. His main problem was Choco trading for Bishop and Wakelin in sequential trading periods.

When he came to SA initially and played for Sturt they spent about a year trying to slot him into their forward lines. After a while they realised he was a defender but we were well off for tall defenders by the time they did.

After watching Toby play today: -

When he was starting, many here felt that Chad Cornes was having trouble improving by having to constantly come off the bench for short periods - pinchhitting to fill gaps. Toby certainly got the same treatment today. No chance of settling in.

Notwithstanding the above, Toby is unlikely to get too much game time unless he changes his mental attitude. Seems a nice guy who just might always run last. He did a couple of good things, but needs to learn that word "proactive".

Body language seemed to indicate that he wasn't enjoying it out there. Take Boofs recent advice to young guys - don't take it so seriously and go out and enjoy yourself.

Toby is one of the more balanced players we have, but he seems to want to play that way all the time. With the result that when he is able to mark over another player or run around an opponent he looks great, but his running off the ball and his 2nd efforts leave a lot to be desired. And he has opposition in not just the experienced players but the younger ones now.

I noticed on sunday that Salopek when on the ground was making a great effort to get into the play. Running, looking, searching for the ball. Even when his some of his efforts came to nothing, you could clearly see him wanting desperately to get into the action. Toby Thurstans was the complete opposite to that. Its only round 1. Hopefully we will see the good Toby soon.

Well done Toby. Good to see you beat your man and get the ball a few times and kick some goals.

And well done to the coaches for giving him a longer time on the ground. In fact most of the younger players got a good run.

Seems a bit of a Jade Rawlings.

Top game by Toby. That turn around his man in the last quarter was pure class. Unfortunately missed the goal and also one sitter (the other point was from 55 metres, I don't think we can blame him for that one.) I can see a few 5 goal returns from Toby this year.

How'd Pettigrew go tonight ? A spine from forward to back of Thurstans, Tredrea, Brogan, C. Cornes, Pettrigrew if it all works is one that could terrorise for many years to come :D

Am I the only one hoping Wakelin doesn't get back to fitness and form for a few more weeks, by which time Pettrigrew has settled into the backline and won't be displaced by someone at the end of their career rather then the start ?

You're not alone, but there are a lot of people that would think it a harsh assessment of Wakelin.

Solid game again, not a lot to play on though. Think he had Staker once he replaced McDougall.

No, although I was thinking Bishop rather than Wakelin before the injury.

And after tonight's effort in almost losing the game for us, I think its high time Bishop was sent packing. Two shockers in a row.

What'd he do ? Damn living in Melbourne and not yet being able to afford foxtel. @#$@#$. Though Bishop only got spanked in the 1st quarter last week before recovering for a decent last 3 on Lloyd.

You should have gone to Bells'! :D

Really pleased with Toby's game. A few of us have been suggesting for a little while now, that if Chad is left at CHB, then all will not be lost by playing Toby up forward.

I realise it is one game, but there were signs last year that as a leading FF Toby has the ability to outlead and outmark opponents. First quarters against Hawks (round 3 2003) and Richmond (late 2003) were testimony to this, but in both matches as was the case last night, Choco moved him away from the forward line after one or two missed shots at goal. Pleased that last night Toby returned to FF in the third quarter.

For some time now it has been evident that we need a tall forward to play FF in a more traditional way than has been the case for us since Cummings' departure.
Chad is a wonderful competitor and mark across HF, but 106 goals from 100 games indicates that he is not our answer to Lynch, Neitz, Lloyd, Gehrig.
Tredrea will be more formidable if someone can play from the goalsquare behind him.

At the moment Damon is not quite ready. Wade Champion showed some signs for Westies yesterday but appears to be a true CHF and needs to be present at more contests to make a better showing.
Lade has only showed signs like Toby did last night on a handful of occasions in all of his matches as a forward.

Give Toby six-eight full matches as a leading goal-square forward. Play Ebert on a HFF or wing and with penetrating delivery like last night, he will give Toby plenty of opportunities to complement Warren. Primus or Lade as the third tall presence as needed.

With Wakelin's impending return, the need to rush Toby back to defence should be lessened. Now is the time to get FF right and give us a really solid spine.
