Some encouraging signs for Freo I thought.

Pavlich was awesom and showed real leadership.

I thought McManus was ok and that Polak tried hard against Carey

Haselby was also very good.

Grover took mark of the day.

You were only outclassed in a couple of short spells and for the rest of the day went with us for the reamineder.

Crows at home will be the hardest game you will play all year bar Brisbane home or away.

Freo will make the eight in my view.

I am interested in what you thought of Headland's game. I think he reckons he is better than he is at the moment. When Reilly chased him down was a classic example.

He played a serviceable game but went missing a lot I thought.

Ben Hart played well yesterday as did Wayne Carey.

Cheers for the comments. Headland more or less spent most of his time in the backline and did OK. I wasn't dissapointed with his game. He did go missing in the 3rd quarter, but he tried hard. His kicking was pretty good, and did try to create opportunities and backed himself against Reilly which I think is a good sign. Hopefully he can be more damaging in future games.

You freo fans probably won't agree with this but I think it was a big mistake to play Haselby, Bell and Pavlich all in the centre at the same time, especially against a side like Adelaide. Why? Because none of them are lightning fast midfielders... [well Pav is quite quick i suppose] and since Adelaide have plenty of them this was exposed when they won the ball, which they did lots. If your winning the footy it isn't a problem but yesterday the dockers were chasing backsides and the Adelaide midfielders streamed forward with confidence that they would burn off their opponents. I would be surprised if they lined up like this for the whole year. I'm not having a go, they are all very talented players, I'm just saying the midfield group needs to compliment each other's skills and that the skills of the individual players could be better utilised. I also thought Pav could have been used as a floating defender like he was for most of last year, especially when the dockers were getting soundly beaten out of the centre.

I sort of agree, but Bell and Hasleby usually are our 2 at roving/clearing the ball so you can't really not include them. And adding Pavlich was so we could maybe break through a tackle and spear a few passes into the forward line. I know they don't have the best acceleration, so you do have a point (when we are not winning the clearances).

I wouldn't say Pav was a floating defender last year, he mostly had a direct opponent. He just knew when to leave his opponent and go to the contest.

Dessy is a Good player ...he is not great , there arent to many 21yo floating around that are greatness. But he is heading there - you must remember I thought he played an awsome game considering this was his 1st hit out in 4 weeks 16 touches in the 1st half and then he went missing ... its kinda understandable

I think Headland played well apart from the third quarter where he went missing.

Reilly's chase was interesting... if you watch it closely you can see that Headland was increasing the distance between him and Reilly. He was running diagnally forward to the left but took a few strides inside over the last few metres which allowed Reilly to cut the angle and grab hold of his jumper. It was a great chase by Reilly, although I would back Headland to beat Reilly in a foot race.

Is it just me, or does Connolly seem to get an idea in his head and then refuse to waver from it during game day?

I know Pav is quite capable of playing midfield, but you desperately needed some strength down the spine on the weekend. Either to settle the ship down back, or to provide a target (other than poor Medhurst) up forward.

Last year he seemed to do the same thing with Farmer. For your sake I hope he doesn't repeat the same mistakes with Pav this year.

If you flip it around it shows his willingness to experiment during a game and see it through. In the long run this season I think we will be better off with Pav playing in the midfield because he will be very hard for many teams to match him up.

Anyway, CC is more of a stick to the plan coach than the type who makes wholesale changes to the lineup during a game.

For us on Sunday you must realise when ever you moved our "stars" your were only robbing from Peter to give to Paul.

We were very short of Big Men

Yeah there were some positves but some things need to improve ....just a few
Medhurst PLEASE stop playing for free kicks and go and get the ball you have the abilityand besides umpires know your tricks now...
Why was Sandilands in the ruck for so long in the first quarter when we were getting caned...sometimes you have to put player development aside and you have to try to win games, yes granted that we were getting killed from the stoppages but i believe he should have put Simmonds back in the ruck earlier
were is the structure to our forward line ,why were players not making proper leads....
I don't like troy wilson(eagles) but i will say one thing for him ,he leads straight and hard .That is what i want to see not F**king mayhem in our forward line ,yes players were out but a structure should still be in place.....By the way who is our forward line coach?

It depends where you think Freo was losing the game. If it was in the midfield (which I think it was) then you need your best players where you are getting caned the most. Even if Pav did play back and the ball went down back 10 or so more times could Pav have done anything to stop the Crows scoring just as much?
