Delisted Todd Banfield (2008-2013)

It's been a shame to see Banfield's form fall so far after a promising year in 2010. I suspect that he's aware that a football career can end quickly and he's putting so much pressure on himself to get things right that nothing is feeling natural for him. He's fallen so far, that it's hard to see him ever coming back.

It seems a bit silly that we talk about needing to draft a midfielder with elite outside run when we have Banfield still on our list. He was a midfield his entire junior career (correct me if i'm wrong), give him the off season to learn his role through the middle and he will surely start cutting it up again.

Not sure if we would get anything for him trade wise, but he has to go IMO. Far too sloppy, inaccurate passing and goal shots and looks genuinely out classed every week.

No love for Todd in my house.

There would be quite a few players I'd delist before Todd.

He's had a diabolical year, no question but I think a lot of the... backlash... against him is not because he is a lost cause, but due to frustration because we've seen how good he can be when he is in form.

I refuse to believe his 2010 (and half of 2011) season was just luck. You can't fluke it for that long. I am pretty sure he has a year to go on his contract and I would expect he will be given that time to try and find himself as a footballer again.

I agree but I will ask for the curse of - International Games selection - be exorcised immediately!

Some players struggle at senior level but look like world beaters in the reserves (eg. Polec and Karnezis), but Banfield still looks out of touch at reserve level.

NT vs Reserves - Semi-Final Review
3 September 2012
Peter Blucher

There was only one piece of bad news to come out of the Lions camp – confirmation from Clarke that small forward Todd Banfield will miss the grand final due to knee problems.

“He always takes a good match-up and he did enough tonight up but he’s been running on empty for a little while with knee problems and he’s done. He won’t play in the grand final,” the coach said of the red-headed small forward.

Might explain his drop in form and confidence.

Just on Saturday night, I don't think Banfield would of ever played in a game where so many of the opposition were as quick as him.

The more I think about it, the more certain I am that getting rid of Banfield would be a backward step. Here we have a player with four seasons under his belt, having played over 50 senior games in three seasons at better than a goal per game. The players currently taking his small forward spot will possibly move into other roles (midfield and/or small defender) at some stage.

Banfield is precisely the sort of player we need to retain. His speed and defensive pressure are elite, and his handling problems can be rectified (I recall that when he first started in the seniors, he was much more of a one-grab player). From a depth point of view, he is the type of player you want to have knocking on the selection door, rather than wondering which inexperienced young player might rise to the occasion. And I don't imagine he is costing too much at this stage.

Nice to see a picture of you with the two boys Freddie ;)

Think getting Kurt Tippet would be the best thing to happen for Toddy.

His best year so far came in 2010, when we had Fev and Browny, two imposing figures, controlling the forward 50. Banfield played higher up the ground and his opponent would usually zone off to help the defense. Now without Fev, Banfield has had to become more of a provider/option instead of opportunist. Although I think a good player should be able to adapt it's obvious this structure (two threatening talls) suits him.

Pressure Act King Under Pressure

After having a strong year as the Pressure Act King in 2011 we were ready for Banfield to take the next step and provide more on the wing or half forward position.

Banfield had an exceptional pre-season, despite missing some running with patella tendonitis. He was reportedly doing extra touch sessions with Shane Woewodin to prepare for stints in the midfield.

A small knee injury occurred at the end of January but the NAB cup came around and he was ready to go…. or was he. His form in the NAB cup suggested that his misgivings had not changed. This seemed to follow through into the home and away season and was prominent in Round 3 against Fremantle. The wet conditions seem to pronounce his poor hands. Bansfield’s defensive pressure was still very good as he also stuck 5 tackles.

Round 4 against the Gold Coast was statistically his best game for the year. 21 disposals, 3 tackles and 8 inside fifties helped the Lions get up for their second win of the year.

Come the end of Round 6 against Essendon his confidence was shot. The pressure of his hands continually letting him down was affecting all aspects of his game.

Life got tougher for Banfield as a hairline fracture in his leg was discovered after Round 7 against Collingwood. With an extended period on the sidelines Banfield had time to reflect on his season so far.

Round 16 against St Kilda saw his return to the seniors. He managed to play 5 rounds before being dropped due to poor form.

Banfield’s year came to an end after the reserves semi-final win against the NT Thunder. It was reported that he had been running on empty with his knee problems and that it was time to hang up the boots for the year.

Was it his knee problems that caused him to have a poor year? Maybe, in that it affected his pressure acts, which apart from is his speed is his only real weapon.
Should he be delisted? Nup. Does he need to develop some more weapons? Most certainly. Toddy has a lot of work to do over the preseason. I think he is up for the challenge.

Green moving into the midfield rotation and Plokinghorne moving back as a rebounding defender could be his salvation. Now Toddy needs to take this opportunity in the Nothing Cup and continue to improve on a promising start to 2013.
