Cricket without crowds was bad but having the Olympics in spacious stadia without a sole will be bizarre. I feel for the athletes.. specially the debutants, having to perform at their best without the aid of accompanying cheering and adulation from family and friends to lift their performance.
Wonder if the Japanese will allow fully vaccinated fans to attend, and spread out over the stadiums / venues / roads events.

Overnight Argentina beat Brazil 1-0 in the biennial Copa America final at the Maracana in Rio. There were a few hundred Brazilian supporters behind one goal and a few hundred Argentinian's at the other end, and maybe a couple of thousand in the stand on the camera side and the stand on the other side was closed off.

A bit of noise and crowd reaction was a lot better than nothing

Brazil and Rio have a lot more cases than Japan and Tokyo.

I hope they as a minimum, allow athletes who are either free because of timing of their events, or have finished their competition, attend events at stadiums / venues / road events to give some support to their countrymen and countrywomen and some atmosphere as well. They are all supposed to be fully vaccinated so not sure what the problem would be, other than the Japanese being super sensitive to the "look" of foreigners being out and about.

I am with you. Those vaxed should be allowed to attend..soul less without even a small crowd to provide some atmosphere. As I understand it only Tokyo venues will be crowd free.
Weren't there 65K at Wembley the other day for the soccer. Madness as the UK also has greater cases than Japan and has not yet reached herd immunity.

The Australian Boomers move to 3-0 in their pre-Olympic exhibition circuit in Las Vegas after a 108-69 blowout win over Nigeria , as like the Boomers, the Africans had beaten the US. And the super confident Boomers did the deed without their four stars, Joe Ingles, Patty Mills, Matthew Dellavedova and Aron Baynes. Chris Goulding led the way for Australia with 21 points, shooting an absurd 7/7 from downtown.

All Aussie Boomers have tested negative after the disclosure that American Bradley Beal has Covid and will miss the Olympics. There was some panic among Boomers personell when Beal was diagnosed as Australia had played Team USA last week in a Olympic warm up basketball series in America.

I feel so sorry for the Japanese. This event costs a lot of money but it is a once in a lifetime party in the host city.

Instead, they get a giant bill and no party. I just feel down on this Olympics. watching any sport with no fans will be tough.
Yep it really sucks for them. Regardless of whether or not its a better strategy generally, I'm really surprised Japan didn't push hard for 0 so they could get this to go off.

Re - Sha'Carri Richardson testing + for weed

Cant say i trust what we hear from the USADA who made the call (not WADA) - my call is that she tested positive for a far more damning PED but given she is the no.1 ranked female sprinter in the world this year the US couldnt afford a huge controversy weeks out from the Olympics so they conspired to come up with a lesser charge in weed

For me the current fastest female athlete in the world smoking weed days before key US Olympic trials knowing its fully banned just doesnt compute ...... because she was distraught over the death of her biological Mum?? ...... hey Sha'Carri lets go smoke some weed ..... but I have the US Olympic trials next week and its banned ........ yeah but smoking weed will soothe your crazy grief which is more important than competing in the Olympics you have trained the last 4 years for ...... yeah good idea lets get high :thumbsu:o_O

Her times this year are Marion Jones (drug cheat) like and just like Flo Jo she goes the full ridiculous make up look thinking it covers obvious manly facial features caused by HGH and the like

I am not much of a conspiracy theorist but this has my doping alarm bells ringing given US Athletics shocking history of drug cheating

They cant afford another huge profile athlete to show up positive for PEDs so this time ...... I am sorry Sha'Carri you are going to have to miss the Olympics but to protect you and us from world shame ...... this week you are a weed smoker

Just keep in mind that WADA are out of the picture ..... this is an internal US thing

Dennis Mitchell is her coach who also coaches Gaitlin - both convicted drug cheats ....... Gaitlin twice

Long bow to draw ........ or is it??

If by - they conspired to come up with a lesser charge in weed - you mean weed + other PEDs were in her system and USADA said lets announce only weed because the other stuff is so minute we probably will lose in a CAS appeal, and we will then get the s**t kicked out of us if we loose a CAS appeal, I can buy that.

If you are saying they completely made up she had weed in her system, when she didn't, but had other stuff, then I call that BS.

I'm someone who believes 95% of pro athletes are on something. And yes you always have to look at who is the coach and the squads training partners when it comes to PED's. The coaches past behaviour does lead to guilt by awssociation IMO.

USADA aren't US Track and Field or US Olympic Committee who in the past would let athletes go to the Olympics if they had tested positive, they made sure they would keep being retested until their new tests were clean. See Dr Wade Exum's revelations in 2003. There has been a massive reform to US doping procedures post Exum's revelations - the Major League Baseball cases, Marion Jones, BALCO, cycling, NFL etc.

Newly disclosed documents prove long-held suspicions that the United States Olympic Committee covered up drug use by athletes, Dick Pound, chairman of the World Anti-Doping Agency, said yesterday.

Dr. Wade Exum, director of drug control for the U.S.O.C. from 1991 to 2000, released more than 30,000 pages of documents to Sports Illustrated and The Orange County Register, and he said they showed that athletes like Carl Lewis and Mary Joe Fernandez tested positive but were allowed to compete anyway.

The Sport Illustrated story starts about half way down the page from their Vault Archives, starting with

Playing Favorites?

An ex-USOC official says some athletes were allowed to bend the drug rules .........

USADA have proved time and again they are independent of the influence of individual sports. They have gone thru court battles as well as plenty of CAS appeals.

And people have been pushing Flo Jo's times for the last 5-10 years, not just Marion Jones.

As a guide, a legal +2.0m/sec tail wind turns a 10.50 time with no wind into approx a 10.40 time and
A -2.0m/sec head wind turns that time into 10.60.

Richardson ran a 10.63 with an illegal +2.6m tail wind in the semi final and a 10.86 with a -1.0m/sec head win in the final.

Do we make separate threads for some elite Olympic sports. Like swimming, track & field, cycling etc?

There is no event on this planet for me that gets the sporting juices flowing..like the Olympics. I still have vivid memories of seeing the Sydney games live. What a showcase that was.. my home Olympics.

Interesting take here about despite the Japanese government imposing no crowds and the public opposing the Olympics, sports are still being played in front of crowds there.

Perhaps it's also more of a fear of the athletes and staff/officials bringing more covid into the country.
