How is he seriously so bad that he can't even get a hit out in JLT? He's been in the system for what, five years now? And he can't get a game over Josh Schache? Surely there is something going on behind the scenes.

im sure there's more to it that we dont know.

but i see no progress in him

He would be doing us a big favour If he retires. Would free up heaps of salary cap. He won’t though. Nor should he. It’s the clubs fault that they signed him to such a large deal

Firstly, it's the beginning of March, and a practice game.

Let's not forget Tom Boyd came out publicly with clinical depression in July last year. These things do not heal overnight and effect everybody in different ways. They still may have impacted him over the preseason.

The fact this appears to be affecting his performance is no doubt frustrating for supporters who want to see him fulfilling his potential and justifying his hefty contract, but its also a very complicated matter and like anybody going through such a thing he deserves both time and privacy.

I hear all your thoughts, but as Scragcity stated in the opening post, we have a bloody right to know what’s going on!

No you don’t. There’s an extremely high chance that nothing is going on. We have a number of players (Roughy, Schache and Trengove) who play a similar position to Boyd and the club seemingly prefers them at this stage of the year.

Salary should and does not come into consideration when selecting a team. Get a grip.

Was just about to say this. I don't think it is a case of Boyd being less ready for AFL football than Josh Schache. I think we all know (including the club) that Boyd is more likely to be a successful player at this stage in their careers and have more impact on games. But things are not so simple sometimes as who is the best player at the moment for this game, otherwise most of us could be AFL coaches. These are human beings who have a whole variety of complex issues that we all go through in life. They are not just men who play a game, they're people.

Boyd is a known quantity. Right now Schache isn't, so its no real surprise that the club is having a good look at him during a practice match.

The sky has not yet fallen.

Short memories. Less than 18 months ago, the bloke wins us a Grand Final and is arguably BOG.

A year later he admits he's struggling with depression and now doesn't get selected for two practice matches and suddenly some of us are ready to end his career.

I seriously give up...

Get a ******* grip.

Unreal.

So people don’t find it odd that Tom Boyd can’t even get a run in JLT... and isn’t even in the 25 man squad yet English is?

Surely shows he’s behind the pecking order of roughead.. scache... Trengrove and English.

Concerning.

How can this be good for his confidence ?

Scrag has gone a bit early but the signs aren't good. If it's another season of little progress, or even worse, a season spent in the VFL, then the trade almost has to be seen as a complete bust and a terrible decision by all involved at the time. It could cost us dearly. Even if it did somehow come off in one crucial game.

It's not Tom's fault though. And he deserves a bit more time.

In Bevo we trust but FFS I’m worried, doesn’t appear all is well

There is no way even if he didn’t play another game with us that it’s a bust.

We play for premierships and have only 2 in 90 odd vfl afl years and without him it would be 1

Let’s hope it’s not all doom and gloom and he is a bit behind for some reason

He is one of the most important players in the history of our club. He didn’t shit himself during the Prelim unlike dozens of Bulldogs before him. He was best on ground in the Grand Final. I challenge anyone to a dual in the Whitten Oval car park, anyone!

If that cost us 7 million - so be it.

Sorry, that’s a stupid thing to say.

Right now he’s a Bulldogs listed player not playing a practice match. Not even a pre-season cup match. A practice match.

Even suggesting that is no better than the nimrods in the media who wanted him to take a pay cut in 2016

Alarmist post ScragCity, we don’t know what is happening, op like this risk compounding any health issues.
Deal paid for itself 1st Oct 2016

I hope Tom comes back stronger and fitter than ever, I know he can, but if, if he doesn’t, so be it. We won a flag, first in 61 years, and he was a major contributor. not a bust in my opinion.

Name me one area of his game that he’s improved on since joining the club? Yes. It was amazing what he did in the Grand Final. But besides that, when has he ever looked like an AFL standard footballer? It’s going to be bloody hard for us to retain some very good players when we are paying him and have Bont coming out of contract very soon. This is just my opinion. You don’t have to agree with what I’ve said.

And in my opinion your opinion is stupid.

Part of being a supporter is supporting. Tom Boyd would be doing us a favour if he became a consistently really good player. If he retires that’s just a waste and not the way a premiership hero should go. And I don’t think it’s right to say that’s the right thing to do.

All this won’t change on the back on not playing in a preseason friendly. Calm your farm

Boyd's ahead of English and Schache, there just getting games in to those two while they can. I'm tipping Bevo and the other coaches are at the stage where they've told Boyd he needs to be playing at a certain level. A level we've seen in the GF, a level that he can play but isn't playing it near regularly enough otherwise he plays twos. It is getting close to the point where he needs to pull his finger out and have a crack or career over. So if its pressure and higher expectations from within the club, meaning he plays twos unless his form is outstanding, then good on them.
This goes one of two ways. His career fizzles out and he becomes a wasted talent or he knuckles down, has a crack and becomes the player he should be.
I'm still confident of the latter but not as confident as I've been in the past. .

My opinion isn’t based on the back of him not playing in a pre season friendly. It’s on the back of watching him play every week for the past 3 years.
