Performed a quick search and didn't see a reference to this, which I thought others might like... an interview (brief one at that) with Tom Clurey on SuperCoach HQ (21/11/13).

SCHQ INTERVIEW WITH TOM CLUREY
21/11/20132 Comments

In the lead up to the draft I thought it would be good to speak to a player who had recently been drafted. This was a great chance to find out what a draftee does on the day of the draft, what sorts of feelings get experienced and what they’re up to now.

Great thing is if he doesn't make the A grade, there now is an incentive to actually go and watch him and see how he progresses in the B's this year as you aren't going just to watch him and one or two others.

I think Tom Clurey is going to become a very good player. Not sure when. Not sure what position. He has all the 'attributes' of a modern footballer.
Two legs? Most of his original arms? GPS chip wired into his sternum? Come on son, we want a bit more effort than that.

Yeah. He has his original legs and arms. It's a win. Nah. For his age he is huge and has an elite engine. Tom has good skills but just needs to improve his decision making. I would love to see him tried further up the ground. If Tom works on his defensive pressure and decision making he could become a terrifying midfielder. I guess i am just confident that Port has finally got the systems in place to fully develop it's players. I think Tom's weaknesses will be overcome by good coaching and structures and that we will be left with a damaging player. In the short term I would like to see him play up forward and rotate through the midfield. It's the vibe. I think he will become the template for the modern cyber footballer. Anyway, I agree. this forum needs more discussion about Tom.

Tom is a good player. Now starting to look most likely to be a very good player. Must play games in 2014. Agree that he has the "attributes". Our back line has the potential to be simply awesome.

I think forward would be a good place to start him. We have plenty of good backs (Hombsch, Heath, Stewart basically reserves). Love his ambifootrous skills but from what I gather his smarts aren't the greatest so decision making and training in structures have to be a big focus for him. Can't wait to see him in the seniors.

Forget all that playing forward and rotating through the midfield stuff. Clurey is going to become Scott Thompson of the North Melbourne variety.. i.e. Chappy replacement with Chappy compensation. It is difficult to work out what we will do with all our quality tallish defenders.

Trengove 197
---------------
Carlile 192
Jonas 188
O'Shea 193
Hombsch 193
Heath 188
Stewart 191
Stevenson 189
-----------------
de-listed
Salter 191
Blee 191

This is why I wanted Clurey (193) to play a different role. (and Broady 189!! - how can i forget Broady?)

Looks like Tom is itching to play AFL next season :)

North star guides Clurey in quest for Power debut

EMERGING Port Adelaide defender Tom Clurey is looking to North Melbourne's All Australian full-back Scott Thompson for inspiration in his quest for an AFL debut.

It's not hard to see why either – both are physically similar at 193cm and although the more experienced Thompson has a few kilograms on the Power's 19-year-old, Clurey is rapidly building his frame.

Can someone tell me which team has multiple 195+ key defenders? Its ridiculous to say we need players just because they are that extra inch taller.

I don't see what stops 188cm Tom Jonas being just as effective a defender as 195cm Troy Chaplin. No team ever plays a forward line with two genuine key forwards over 195cm and when they have ie: the quadrangle of doom/Essendon playing 10 rucks they lose because the ball gets rebounded to the face.

By the end of the season I think our backline could look like this:

Jonas - Carlile - Hombsch/Clurey (whoever performs best in Sanfl/AFL)
O'shea - Trengove - Pittard/Broadbent (Both rotating through wing/hb)

Possibly even playing both Hombsch and Clurey to allow Trengove to go into the ruck. That defence with good structure will be able to handle any forward line. Its just about getting the midfield pressure up too. When we do that we will challenge any side.

North tend to play Petrie, Black and Tarrant more often than bot through the last 10 games of the year. Sydney loved running Tippett, White and Pyke, with Reid and Franklin, I assume they''ll play 3 key Forwards. Hawthorn played Franklin, Roughead/Hale and Gunston in a three pronged Forward 6.

I think the argument is, if Trengove goes down we don't have another 197cm-200cm Key Back to sit on the Resting Ruck (Petrie/Tippet/Hale) but the unique thing with Trengove is his Pace for such a big lad (hence why Stanley would have been a good inclusion)

I was a big fan of Jed Redden and look forward to following him this year hopeful of a rookie spot next year.

None of those North forwards set the world on fire and Sydney actually played better as a team when Tippett wasn't in the forward line even though he kicked bags of goals. As for the Hawthorn forward line Franklin and Gunston are not really key forwards and I would far prefer more mobile defenders like Jonas to be playing on them.

Take a look at the top defences from last year

Freo - Dawson 197, Johnson 195, McPharlin 192 with Silvangi 192 as backup
Sydney - LRT 194, Richards 192, Grundy 192, Alex Johnson 193
Richmond - Chaplin 195, Rance 193, Grimes 192 with Astbury at 195 as backup
Geelong - Lonergan 197, Taylor 193, Rivers 192 with Mackie as their next tallest defender at 192

Port - Trengove 197, Hombsch 193, Clurey 193, Carlile 193, O'Shea 192 (more similar to Mackie) and then Jonas in at 188 but as we know can play tall.

So compared to those teams I think we actually stack up very well. Obviously a few injuries and we are in trouble but then you can say that about any position.

I also think we are well stocked in defence and defenders. However we are top heavy in Midfielders. I wouldn't be disillusioned if at the end of the year Dom retires and we were to take a 197+ Key Back/Ruckman. I also wouldn't be to fussed if Logan Retires we take a another Ruckman. If Renouff doesn't make his way back to the senior list another Ruckman could be taken. So we could add 3x197+ footballers this coming draft without compromising too much.

But these guys can't be the Ryan Willits or Damon White, slow, non agile 1980 key Forward.

Also consider that 195+ cm defenders are rare as hen's teeth (but admittedly some are now popping up).

One development theory I've heard expressed before is that junior key position talent is generally found amongst forwards as the best players naturally end up in those roles. This would include the taller players you'd think. (This theory also extends to junior KPFs being turned into KPD)

In other words, forwards will always tend to be taller than defenders. Smart players and coaches will use the height discrepancy weakness as a strength, ie additional mobility.
