Thats besides the point
Pitto is not going to get Carlton there again
You have your midfield set now and are committed and he was only a stop gap

TDK has been your best player this year by a margin along with Wietering
How is it besides the point? Nearly all our best stretches of footy over the last 3-4 years have been with Pittonet in the side as our main man.

You lot won 3 flags with Nank.

WCE won one with Lycett and Vardy

Brisbane with the Big O & Fort in the GF

You saying Pittonet is essentially unplayable is simply disingenuous and dumb.

I feel it’s playing out as everyone has expected and anticipated.
TdK wants to stay a Blue but the dollars StKilda are offering are a big inducement.
TdK and his management have and will keep playing this out to see if we blink and up the offer.
We keep hearing we won’t change our offer, as we are tied into a cap structure, so the ball will be in TdK’s court.
There are plenty of other considerations, so as I don’t upset some opposition posters, I’ll let them be.
Does he stay a one club player or does he take the money? That is and will be the decision.

That's free agency - it's not always fair. I'd personally rather let TDK go and take the pick and the salary space than offer him 1.4 million a year for 7-years. That would be far too high imo even for a ruck with the potential of TDK. And I say potential because he is not the complete ruck yet. Still has major issues against big-bodied ruckman which drive me up a wall. It's like someone has to go up to him during the game and yell "YOU ARE ATHLETIC" at him so he stops trying to wrestle with the likes of Nankervis, Briggs, O'Brien, etc.
1.4 seems a lot, but to replace him we are paying at least $800k and likely to be far inferior. TDK still has not peaked and has a fair bit of upside to improve so at 1.4 you are paying him on potential to become a top 3 ruck in game, which he is capable of being.

The draft pick, assuming Carlton finish the season strongly somewhere between 6th-10th, by the time the NGA and father son picks its likely to be late teens, at about the same position we have drafted players like Brodie Kemp, Sam Philp, Liam Stocker, Lochie OBrien, David Cunningham, Blaine Boekhurst... none of these will move the needle and we are far better keeping a player who wants to play for the club, with his mates and drive the club forward... 1.7 is a different conversation though.

How many rucks in the AFL are getting paid 800K+ a year? Surely it isn't more than 5.

If i had to guess these would be above that, or close.

  • Gawn
  • Xerri
  • Witts
  • English
  • Marshall
  • Nankervis
  • Jackson
  • Darcy
  • Draper
  • Grundy

Darcy Cameron will go above this at his next deal, as would Oscar McInerney.

Yeh maybe a couple close but I didn't think Witts, Xerri, Nank and Draper would be on that. But who knows I guess.

Regardless, I don't think you need an elite ruck to be a premiership contender. If its a choice between paying TDK 1.4 million or getting a first round draft pick and two quality players in at roughly 500k-700K each per year I would go with the latter.

According to this https://www.zerohanger.com/leap-in-afls-top-earners-as-25-players-rake-in-seven-figures-158383/

There is 122 players in the comp earning more than $700k (will increase significantly over next CBA), 6.7 per club.. I would think that the first-choice ruck in each side would be within the highest 7 players paid at most clubs.

Very interesting you made that comparison that made me think

I recommend you have a look and might reconsider
Max Gawn thinks TDK could be the best ruck in the game soon.

TDK is clearly being “managed” by his management team, wanting to maximise his value & so he should.

Not as cut & dried as some would have us believe.

Cook & Wright surely won’t pay stupid overs - leaving SOS to do that.

Who knows but i would highly Doubt they stick to the reported $1.1 mil without going up some amount and just let him walk out the door in a very weak draft for pick around 12

Looking at contracts now and clubs paying $1.3-$1.4 to keep existing players
I have a feeling the blues will up their offer to around $1.4 to try get him to stay (only $300k ) in todays landscape is reasonable

Justa guess ( as we would never really know ) i would say in 2026 atleast 10

Nankervis
Cameron ( salary will be adjusted 100%)
Gawn
Xerri
Marshall
Witts
English
Jackson
Darcy ( Freo)
Draper ( New contract)

They’re probably trying to be creative - how they can bridge part of the gap in ways that don’t cripple the salary cap.

Incentives, 3rd party initiatives through business contacts - our next Visy Ambassador?

Who knows.

Wouldn't this pretty much be the biggest contract in the AFL? Is that reasonable for a ruckman?
I think it might be now days and its a changing climate
$1.4 mil is being discussed for NWM
$1.3 mil LDU
$1.4 mil plus for pickett
$1.6 mil plus for Reid
Butters will demand similar to the above

I think we need to look at TDK as potentially the next Gawn with 8 years left in his prime
the weigh up what a replacement would cost $800k-$1mil plus for a good Ruck and what you get for the compo pick

Say you get Emmett with that selection as a replacement and have to invest 5+ years development and still a chance he ends up a bust

Im thinking $1.4 for a player like TDK who is a proven A grade Ruckman now that wants to stay is looking like the price to pay now

surprise no one popped up and said this was SOS plan all along, get TDK to go back to carlton and squeeze more out of the cap and SOS recruit his boy on the cheap.

I get the vibe his son might prefer to play where his dad isn't these days. Miserable prick wouldn't even celebrate a Milestone game with his son.
