“What St Kilda has done with a lot of their big contracts is they’ve front-ended them,” Ralph told Midweek Tackle. “So (club president) Andrew Bassat has previously said: ‘It’s saving us money for later years when we’re in the premiership mode.’

“St Kilda and TDK’s management haven’t specifically spoken about that one yet, but it would be a no-brainer to give him $200,000 or $300,000 or $400,000 more in his first year.
TDK’s manager is doing a great job clearly.

He wants to stay at the Blues & is openly using a reported $1.7m offer to eek out the best deal he can get from Carlton, as is his right.

Or, does he want to join the success story that is The “St. Kilda - Ex-Carlton Players Association” - with Liam Stocker, Paddy Dow & Matt Carrol?

And have no money to do anything else to improve the list?
Well Losing TDK and Gaining somebody else would not be considered to be improving the list

You want to keep TDK you pay 'Close' to market rate

Carlton have benefited from free agency in the past and knew this day would come

What goes around comes around

When have we benefited from free agency in recent times?

Hewett & Acres have been great.

Relatively low cost.

Williams seen as the answer to our midfield needs at 800k/year over 5 years - ouch.

Imagine paying one player more than double that each year for 7 years!

Gasp!
$1.7 today is like $1.25 in 2019 where Richmond had Lynch & Dusty on these contracts
Not really terrible specially if you have $3 mil banked

Hmmm not so sure.

TDK is a brilliant F/T ruck, but struggles when he’s taken in/out of the game.

Why would St Kilda pay $1.7m for a ruck when they already have one - maybe Marshall wants out?

TDK is 4 years younger than Marshall. Marshall will turn 30 in 2026.

St Kilda are in the process of rebuilding (Lyon calls it building, but I call it rebuilding. Just look at our draft haul last drat)

TDK is just older than a talented batch of younger players that he would be able to play many years with. Higgins is just older than TDK. They are chasing TDK for the longterm.

TDK and Marshall are both good runners, very mobile and very good around the ground, being link players as well as pushing back as well as forward. So when the ball is in motion both could be on the ground.

MAFS!

$1.7 million per season is just that. It doesn’t matter what was paid in 2019.

it’s 1.7million to one player over 7 years - it’s not like St Kilda don’t need a bunch of other types.

At some point spending that much on one player - will cost something more.

But why spend so much for a ruckman when they have a great one already?

Especially one that doesn’t play well in a 2 ruck setup….

Is this supposed to bother me? 😂

He can stay at Carlton either way an aging list that is getting further and further from contention.

Just look at the percentage of your cap in 2017-20019 of $1.25mil v Cap space of 2026 -2028

Marshall would have to play forward - CHF?

I get it!

Still - if you have a leading ruckman already - would you pay $1.7m to bring in another one - or would you bring in Dusty in his prime?
Thats something for StKilda's list management to decide
Clearly they see value in having both players and have to use the cash before they lose it as you cant bank it for ever and TDK is the best free agent they rate.

They’re not here - hence the Q’n.

St Kilda have thrown money at quite a few free agents recently - TDK just the next available.

SOS trying to feather his cap.

Well its simple really

St kilda have more than $3 mil of banked cap space which they need to use as they have front loaded contracts for years and now at a point where they need to use it and dont have players currently in need of increases.
They have a look at free agents and make a play for a few and some are valued higher like TDK & Callaghan
the chances are they miss on most but possibly get 1 maybe 2 so why not go for the big fish.

Thats the exact purpose of the Cap banking when teams are down the bottom to help them get free agents and not over pay kids. Nothing wrong with that

Im sure Richmond this year will be foward paying the contracts of Hopper , Taranto , Balta , broad , Short & Vlastuin
and will most likely have over $5 mil of cap to spend on free agents next year.

This is exactly how the banked cap space should be working

You’re dodging my question.

If you were SOS, would you spend 1.7m x 7 years on a ruckman(albeit a very good one), given you already have one, or a “Dusty” in his prime, as you’ve suggested.

They won’t be able to do both - they also need to allow some room to pay their own players - or they’ll have another “Battle” on their hands.

100% i would

He either spends it or loses it , Not sure whats hard to understand
If you have the cap space banked you use it.

They may be able to do both after a few years of heavily frontloading Tom's contract.

We had plenty of room to pay Battle, and apparently offered more than the Hawks to stay, but he wanted to leave. Not relevant.

You should worry less about what St Kilda are doing and more on enjoying watching Pittonet as your key ruck.
