Some first game stats of more deers-in-headlights/ scared little children.

Gary Ablett 4 Kicks 4 Handballs 1 Turnover

Nick Dal Santo 3 Kicks 4 Handballs 3 Turnovers

Jack Riewoldt 2 Kicks 3 Handballs 2 Turnovers

Nick Riewoldt 3 Kicks 0 Handballs 1 Behind

Dane Swan 5 Kicks 1 Handball

Shit, Lynch didn't get 19 touches and a goal from outside 50 in his first game so he must not "belong"?... Delist him?

First time in front of a 35,000 crowd

Some of you people have obviously never kicked a football.

Good post.
All I can say right now is which players look like they are moving right.
For me that includes Stanley, Steven , and Geary. Jury still out on Heyne, Lynch, and that other guy, ummm Robert someone.

Its a bit ironic that people are saying he should go out never to play again and bring back McQualter. That would be McQualter the first round draft pick who was DELISTED, TRAINED AT HAWTHORN, and placed on the rookie list after 3 years.

Exactamundo.

And IWAGD - you continue to surprise. Go the stats man!

It's true we haven't had a gun first year jump out and be a star in his first season. But then we haven't had a pick lower than 9 since 2003.

Although Collingwood getting Sidebottom AND Beams in their first 2 picks pisses me off.

I believe Kosi was a star in his first season!

Now hang on, how long after they joined their clubs did they play thier first games.
Dont be afraid to say it. Lynch was a big disapointment on friday night. For a first round draft pick and 2 years in the system and he looked completley lost. Not even close to being ready for AFL.... Now breath.. This is OK, he's still young and has lots of time to get it right. Even Ross said in the conference with a wry smile that he now realizes how not ready he is.

But really, dont flatter him on that performance. Alot of members and supporters were dispapointed in him, wishing would it be too much to ask to see something from a first round pick.

Ross can smile - as he was the one who set the kid up to fail.

Lynch has struggled as a forward almost every time this year, but then looked a completely different player down back. Why would the Saints play him as a forward when he hasn't delivered in that role in the VFL?

Of course the Sandy watchers were still disappointed in his performance. Very disappointed. But a number of people have made stupid calls on his career without having seen any of his last 6 weeks of footy in the backline.

Given we lost three games all year in 2009, including the GF, I hardly think Lynchy was going to crack it for a game.

Has been injured during the year, but Lyon has proven if you do the work at Sandy you'll be looked at.

So it's Ross' fault that he missed an open goal and decided to turn his back on the ball when leading up?

Drawing a long bow there.

It is indeed Lyon's fault that clearly he has not watched enough of the Zebs this year. I understand the coaches need to spend more and more time on analysing the AFL opposition (and that we have good people including Greg Hutchison watching VFL games), but a couple of weeks ago Tommy had terrible trouble with his kicking (couldn't hit a barn door). And I re-iterate that he has struggled as a VFL forward.

I'd like anyone to give me a hint as to why you'd pick the guy in a position he isn't yet nailing at the lower level.

Who was he going to replace in the current back 6?

A forward went out and he came in.

We can't have 22 backmen.

1. Any chance we are going to show a little respect to Morefrees (how many games to we need to be punished in)?

2. Gilbo has been in some rotten form, and looked better when he got pushed up into the midfield. We couldn't think about doing that before the game was over?

3. Why pick a guy at all if you can't play him in his most suited position?

4. We played better footy when we tried to spot Milne up as a leading forward (in Roo's absence). Why play someone who is only going to upset the balance?

5. Zac, Gilbo, Fish, Blake, Geary and Gwilt doesn't look sufficiently mobile for mine (as a back 6). Gears is a handy player, but he's not even quick at VFL level.

Your right, most played poorly. Exept a couple I thought stood out like Dawson, Gwilt and Shnider I thought played well. Even Gram who had a heap pf possesions but i think he had like 20 possesions in the last quater when it didnt matter already.

But why do we pick on Lynchy? Its because it was his first real crack, he took our attention more. Some of the mistakes he made were really hard to watch. Its not anger from supporters, its disapointment.

Who do we play him without Baker? Dempster?

Game was over at 1/4 time.

3. Why pick a guy at all if you can't play him in his most suited position?

Suited in your opinion. He was drafted as a mobile forward, whch is what we've lacked for two years. Perhaps it's time to ditch the Sandy alignment and go it alone? Have better control over player development.

4. We played better footy when we tried to spot Milne up as a leading forward (in Roo's absence). Why play someone who is only going to upset the balance?

I would like to see the forwards spread instead of all following Riewoldt to the ball. Much easier to quell a threat like Fletcher in this manner.

No point being quick out of defence if we can't get our hands on it.

We were definitely top heavy against the Bombers, but I can't see who else besides Baker improves that back 6.

Gears was suited to the job, and I would have assumed after previous games he would have gone straight to Morefrees (but didn't). It seems the Saints reckon that Morefrees is a bit lazy and can be run off. They keep being proven wrong.

Yep - with Gilbo's form, a release to the midfield from the first bounce would have been in order to get a few kicks. The Saints seem insistent on keeping things the same, but when Plan A doesn't work and we don't want to use Plan B (and just expect the guys to try harder) it makes for tough viewing. We change it up a bit when the game is over (and it works well), and then go back to the same old the next game.

Lynch played both forward and in defence before coming to the club. Didn't you read the bio comments I posted? B10 (as an U/18 watcher) also mentioned this. Why would it be just my opinion when Lovell (who is employed with the Saints as well as coach of Sandy) plays him in the backline? We have enough say in selection (Paul Cahill hasn't touched the pill for over a month but keeps getting a gig), and ditching Sandy is "a bit of a long bow" to draw :D

I hear you on the forward structure, but when Goddard went into the forward line all of a sudden there seemed to be space, with Riewoldt working further up the ground and giving off a few handballs for goals.

We had enough of the ball and more forward entries than Essendon. They made more of their opportunites, and Morefrees was a big part of that.

With a total of 45 posoessions between Sam,Sam and James, I'm not sure we can say that Gwilt (14 of them ) had a great day out either. You have to say that our rebounding ability was pretty much knocked out.

I recall Pattison having a pretty dreadful debut, with many calling for his head, and Nick Heyne was pretty ordinary in his second game, but people were a bit more forgiving to him I think.

Gears probably coud have been given first crack. Keep it in perspective than Angus got three goals from free kicks. The second one against Blake for in the back was wrong and his 50m penalty was pretty soft as well. However I mentioned pre game that we needed to be mindful of him, so I'm with you there.

That's probably the issue with having such a successful structure and gameplan. At what point do you pack it in? Interesting though that Rossy said on GameDay he thought we were in all sorts 6 or 7 mins in. A fair point indeed, although I would have liked to see Gilbo on a wing.

I saw your comments re Tommy. I believe he was drafted to fill a need as the 3rd forward. Something we're in dire need of. As McQualter was omitted, it was clear to me that is where he would play. I understand your point. However surely you'd agree it's easier getting a kick at Sandy down back, than up forward? Many a player has come into the game as a forward as had ended up cutting their teeth down back. Now is not the time for that. We are looking for a role player up forward. Tommy was tried there and struggled. Not the best grooming for him to perform said role, but he's not my go to man in September to hold a Stokes, Varcoe or Johnson.

It's a bloody hard role, and one we haven't been able to fill since Hamill finished up. To be able to give the other forwards enough space, but command the ball when necessary, and be able to slot them from 40-45m.

Mini, Eddy, Sam Fish, Armo, Dempster, Gwilt, Blake, Woody (Allen). And now Lynchy.

Time to bite the bullet and give it more permanently to the main man. Someone who can help with directing traffic, can mark one handed, has a big leap, and can split the middle from 50m.

We had enough inside 50s to win, but can't rely on Kosi in a contested marking situation any more. Ross is almost saying he's there to create opportunities for the smalls - give me a break!!!

True its a hard role to play as a forward stopper and play maker. McQualter played this role perfectly last year but his form dropped of badly this year.

But the whole team isnt defending/tackling any where near as good as last year.

We don't need to change our game plan, we just have to go back to executing it properly.

Im hoping Tommy Walsh will develop into the player that were missing at CHF. Maybe next year??
