Don't like bagging my own team have mentioned this before on BF, but he just doesn't have it (at least I haven't seen it as yet) to be a regular contributor .. So so skills, doesn't read the ball well and a second grabber...that's my opinion of course.

He could be our Cameron Ling.. turn him in to a pest and get him in a negating tagging role.

Love to see him given a tagging role on a star to see if he is up to it.

He is a ball magnet in that he knows how to get his hands on the ball, but his decision making under pressure is the part of the game he has to improve.

I agree with the tagging role, if even as a tool to help him develop, let him follow some of the best mids around for a year, we saw the dramatic improvement to Daisy's game when he did something similar, so it definitely can't hurt Tom.

He'll play senior games this year, no doubt, but he would have to improve significantly in some areas of his game to be in the best 22 come finals.

He's [this is how you use the word] getting better.
Hard at it and his [this is how you use the word] work ethic is first rate.
I think he will play more senior games than he did last year.

I don't agree with the OP's assessment.

He seems a bit scrappy by hand and foot, and doesn't really seem to be a high level runner (speed or endurance) to mitigate this weakness.

I am not convinced that he will be a midfielder, still think he projects more as a hbf, but don't think he has the speed to really exceed at that spot.

Hope I am wrong.

He does get a lot of the ball which is a great start.

Uses it pretty well most of the time.

For a young player, who clearly has a passion and apetite for the game, that's a very healthy start.

I reckon he'll make it, and agree with Ling-type role above, would be interesting to see how he went with that.

You only have the read the NAB round 2 thread to see how much opinion is divided.

I really rate him. He may have shoddy disposal but I think alot of people forget this fundamental point - he is 19, this is his 2nd year on our list and played VFL in 2010 and won the BnF, he came from NSW as a relatively inexperienced player compared to most of his Victorian counterparts.

We regularly forgive Toovey, Cloke, Maxwell, Shaw, Harry and Swan for their brain-farts when disposing of the ball, surely we can forgive Young at his age and experience level. People are comparing his decision making to the likes of Buckley, but the fact is that he wants the ball, he tries to move it forward with haste and has extremely good agility for a 191 cm 90+ kg player.

From a quote from the Collingwood site: "Young is a reliable decision maker with nice disposal and great awareness in heavy traffic. He uses his body well to avoid tackles and has been a key playmaker in the VFL over the past two years."

Now I know the put alot of fluff in there but the bolded are what will make him important to our team and which I believe are his key attributes. Midfielders and attacking backs need to be play makers and he has this ability in spades.

Positives: Playmaker, strength, agility, goes hard, vision and quick disposal.

Negatives: Brain fades, wonky kicks and annoying traits (for some).
These negatives can and will be reduced when he gains confidence and plays some more senior games.

End....Large post.

I think it's more important that the team and coaches rate Tom Young than the general public. He's shown he can make it as an AFL player, he's young (no pun intended) but has proved he can start providing depth to the team. A lot of players take years to break into their teams. I get the feeling a lot of Pies supporters are getting spoilt for choice over recent years and think that anyone who looks like they can't play immediately should be discarded.

I like Young's production. Even as a 17 year old at VFL level he could hold his own and has shown when given the opportunity at AFL level that he can compete.

But I do have questions about decision making and kicking skills in particular. Both need to be cleaned up before he can become a regular AFL player.

Has a strong work ethic on his side so there is still hope for him. On the fringe right now, but far from a sure thing.

I'm not so fussed about kicking and decision making. There are many at AFL level that struggle with it, but despite that have carved out very successful careers.

He may be a different type to some of these guys but at the same age he's shown more than Reid, Swan, Maccaffer, Shaw, Dawes, O'Brien and Toovey who all made significant contributions to a premiership. Finding the footy is essential in today's game and he looks to be very adept at that!

FWIW I see him more in the Matty Boyd mould than Cameron Ling. Boyd is tremendous at finding the footy and has improved his decision making and efficiency tenfold since he began. Whether or not Young has the drive to succeed that Boyd has is what will determine the level he ultimately reaches.

I am in the positive camp with Young. With his size , strength and ball winning ability he has a lot of potential. Don't really see his disposal as a problem it will improve as he matures and should be fine. I see him as a big chance of becoming established 22 this year and a long term player for the Pies.

Big strong midfielders who get the ball are not to be sneezed at.

Don't see how anyone can consider it a negative that a 19 year old can win a shitload of the footy, has decent pace out of a contest, and has a good size for a strong inside mid. Clean disposal and awareness are both skillsets which develop over time - being a ball magnet is innate. How can anyone complain about that? By the time he is 21 I'd wager he'll be a starter for our midfield.

I'll take a slice of that. So you are suggesting that next year, he will be a first choice centre square midfielder? So he will knock off at least one of Pendles, Swan, Ball, and get himself in front of Daisy, Wellingham, Beams, Sidebottom, and manage to hold off players like J Thomas and Rounds?

And I am not sure people are saying it is a negative that he can win the football, etc, just that these things alone won't make him an AFL standard player.

I’m a fan. There’s some footage that has been shown on the footy shows this week due to the Jack Watts circus. One of the lackluster plays that Watts was involved in saw Tom Young crash into a Melbourne player body first when the ball was at ground level, took him out and made the correct decision to handball straight out the back to a teammate.

Whilst this is only a small example of something he’s done on the football field (and in the NAB Cup no less), but this combined with a few of his other efforts showed me that he has a hunger for the contest.

Being 191cm he’s a great height for a flanker type role (could pinch hit as a tall down the track?), definitely knows where to find the footy, has pretty good speed and appears to have a reasonable tank. For me these are all important traits to have so I definitely think we have a player here. Not exactly sure what his role will be, which is not necessarily a bad thing, he could potentially play a few different types of roles and that will only help the team.

He'll be 21 for the first 6 rounds of the 2014 season. It definitely isn't unreasonable to think that he could be a starting midfielder by then. IMO he won't make it that early, however I think he will at least be part of our midfield rotattion by then.

In a lot of ways his start reminds me of Heath Shaws 1st games, not highly touted, query on skills. Shaw looked immediately at ease with the pace of the game and found the ball in contested situations. Young has been the same in his 2 games last yr and the NAB cup. Its not just finding the ball like a Barham its looking comfortable with the pace

I knew Bo Nixon and can remember his telling me how he felt fine at VFL level but the increase pace of AFL just lost him and he couldn't get near it. He couldn't make that transition. Players who manage that easily have a big future for mine

He kicked two on debut didn't he.. Dane Swan didn't start that well

Years ago, I never thought Ben Reid would last and thought he was a complete muppet during his first games.

I never try and judge a player early in their career anymore.

Bucks singled out Young in last weeks post match press conference (including that his head was looking down when he made the Martin blunder) BUT if the coach likes what he sees then who am I too disagree? One of the ways I will judge Bucks coaching (other than winning..lol) will be how he integrates Young, Rounds and co. into the side.

He'll be a gun. Naturally, his confidence and decision-making will improve as he gets older. He has shown plenty so far, for a raw kid. As someone pointed out, Swan didn't look anywhere near as good at that age, if you want a rough comparison. Show some faith.

I didn't even consider him to be a realistic 15-20 game option this year, but after the game against Melbourne I could definitely see some positives that could be worked on. I'd say he should be aiming to play around 15 games this year and I think he looks like the type of guy who will improve with games at the top level. Having said this, he will definitely need to improve, as at the moment his kicking is ordinary, and his hands below his knees aren't great either.
But as others have said, it's pretty difficult making the step up and finding the footy. He is finding the footy, perhaps like Swan he will slowly improve his decision making and disposal as he goes along.
Now the reason I posted was due to someone mentioning him as a tagger. I would love this. We haven't had a tagger or a good shutdown player since Licuria (yes I am including Wellingham). Wouldn't it just be great for his education to follow around guys like Mitchell (r1), Cotchin (r2), Judd (r3). I think he has all the attributes physically to be a good run with player (strength, speed, looks at home in the packs), however I would say that the mental side of the role is more important and whether he has that or not is still questionable. Would be great to see him try though.

He's a scrubber. Reminds me of the sort of player Tony Shaw hoarded.

Scrubbers have made it before with hard work and the right coach but they start behind the 8-ball at the top level. Right now we should be looking for premiership players - players that will impact in finals. I don't think he is one but we don't have to cut him yet either so he should be given a chance.

We can't stop rotating players through the list though so his time should be limited. Every year 3 to 5 players have to be cut and every few years it probably will need to be more than 5. If there is a strong draft and we want to promote rokies the cut will be 6+. That makes it hard for anyone who's been around a few years and not a best 22 player or very close to it.

Anyway, good luck to the boke but I don't expect to see him playing for Collingwood in 2 or 3 years.
