If you had a cricket bat and were allowed to hit him once, where would you aim?

I wish we could shut him up for 5 mins so would smack him in the head :D

I would thrash him repeatedly about the head thus disqualifying myself from the game. But it would be worth it.

I'd give Chapelli a few solid blows as well.

Tony hasn't ****ed me off as much as usual this summer, but I guess we are only 3 days in.

Bill Lawry been getting on my nerves with his bad calls. eg 'That's 4...almost if the fielder doesn't get to it, and he's got to it and they run 3".

He has a bad case of premature four-speculation.

Excellent summation of his commentary style - Greigy also will contribute a stack of premature calls and plain mistakes this summer.

Time for them both to pass the torch.

It's a shame Denzel (Commetti) hasn't played test cricket for Australia. He would fit nicely into the commentary box alongside Richie.

Yeah, I've been noticing Lawry's been making a few mistakes so far this summer.

Most noticeable one was today when he said that it was Hoggard who hit that uppercut over the slips for four when it was in fact Crawley (as if Hoggard would be good enough to play a shot like that).

I also notice that when the old guard (Benaud, Lawry, Grieg) make mistakes, they rarely correct themselves, yet Healy always does when he makes a factual error.

They usually opt for a prolonged period of silence before subtley changing the topic. Pros!

I had a gutful of Lawry and Greig about 10 years ago, so you can just imagine how thrilled I am to see they are still on the air.
I don't mind Tony Greig on documentaries when he is being interviewed, but I cannot stand his style of commentary.
Can't wait to hear how Mark Waugh comes up on the commentary team, his laconic approach would be like a breath of fresh air ... new ideas, new phrases, new stories. I recall the Centenary Test, and Thomson & Lillee with great fondness, but every year I hear the same old stories from Greig, Lawry, Chappell, etc. Channel 9 needs some new blood, badly.

Greig: I like him. I like the way he gets excited, he is probably my 2nd favourite commentator.

Richie: The best in the business, enough said.

Lawry: He's OK, I also like the way he gets excited.

Chappell: Hate him! Negative and never excited.

Healy: Not his biggest fan, but he is OK.

Taylor: Same as Healy.

Atherton: Yeah I like him aswell.

I found Mark Waugh to be dreadful during the winter series against Pakistan. (you know the one that got bagged for being in the middle of footy season) In fact like you I can't stand channel nine's commentary at all, that's why I listen to ABC!

Yes, I am one who listens to the ABC whilst watching the vision on Channel 9. However, in this test just played, I noticed the time difference between sound and picture was more pregnant than usual. I was hearing the ball crashing into the stumps before the bowler even let go of the ball. Has anyone else noticed this?

That makes two of us. The time difference was so pronounced that I didn't listen to the radio when balls were bowled as it was too disconcerting.

ABC's radio commentary is always excellent to listen to; sometimes it's even more interesting during a rain break.

Yeah I noticed that, usually with free to air there isn't much difference but there certainly was this test (not as much as pay tv; I found it impossible to watch any fox footy matches with the radio on). Sometimes its good, as if I'm on the computer I can quickly turn my head to the tv to see what I've just heard. :)

I would like it if some of the blokes in the box had actually picket up a bat in the last 25 years.

I find it hard to digest listening to some of the oldies telling me the particulars of One Day cricket when they played hardly any (or none) one-dayers in their career.

Richie - The lord of the manor.

Bill - Does love his cricket. Someone mentioned that he hasn't been his usual self this summer. Richie mentioned that he hadn't participated in the commentary before the start of the test (no ODD matches). I suspect he's unwell, or someone in his family is and it's affecting his performance.

Tony - Get rid of him. He's as biased and patronising, and inaccurate as ever.

Ian Chappell - He commits the most heinous of sins. He's boring.

Simon O'Donnell - Also on the dull side. Useful as a bits-and-pieces sort of presenter / commentator.

Heals - Great. He has a high level of insight into the game.

Tubby - Very straight down the line. In 20 years, he will be the next Ian Chappell, but for now he's okay.

Ultimately, the best balance would be achieved through a representative from each era, mixed with recently retired greats, a color commentator and an expert. Added to that would be an opposition great for whoever we are playing in a summer.

So...

Richie - 50s/60s
Bill - 60s
Rod Marsh / Maxie Walker - 70s
Simon O'Donnell - 80s (this is a stretch)
Tubby - 90s
Heals - recently retired
M. Waugh - recently retired
Kerry O'Keefe - Color
Peter Roebuck / Tim Lane / Jonathan Agnew - Expert

Opposition expert (Holding, Atherton, Pollock)

Actually, that looks awful...

Kerry O'Keefe - he's just embarassing has the worst jokes ever and always laughs at them. It does help that others laugh at him - he thinks they are laughing with him and it just encourages him.

Holding - this guy is cricket's Barry White. Much respect.

It seems there is a bit of an elitist attitude amongst the commentary team. Richie, Bill, Ian, and Tony are all ex-captains, and then the new bloods (Taylor and Healy) are ex-captain and VC. It seems they think no one else is worthy of the job.
