Went to footy on the road last Friday and a Docker player outside the 22 was there saying some interesting comments about the coaches.

He said something like one coach would tell him to play this way while another would say no play like that way. Depending on which part of the field he plays on he gets a different explanation of his role, and CC would not overrule or explain either coaches differing opinion. He thinks we have to many coaches who are pulling in their own direction and this is confusing the players.

What do you think?

I think almost everyone on this board thinks we have too many coaches. The fact that Cuddles is not overruling them just shows, yet again, that Cuddles is not up to the task. We must have the most assistant coaches in the league. We have the highest paid assistant coach in Harvey. Cuddles LOVES passing the buck. Looks like hes even doing it with the players.

I don't think we have any more coaches than any other club do we? But it is a big concern if they're not all pulling in the same direction. If that's true it's not a good endorsement of CC. He should be the one to ensure we have a cohesive strategy mapped out with everyone on the same page.

Sometimes I do get the impression that our players are 'overcoached'. That is, bombarded with to much confusing info instead of being drilled into an instinctive cohesive style that will stand up when the pressure is on.

Daniel Gilmore

"I'm in the not a fan of" crowd of him as a player but as a person he came across as a nice guy who feels frustrated as a player because his role is constantly being changed by different coaches.

His comment on the coaches got me thinking about those other players who are struggling also and seems like a logical reason as to why they are. As a team I also feel they are pulling in different directions and this could be why we haven't clicked this year.

It does feel like too many chiefs to me.

I understand why we have a coaching team and all of them want the same thing in the end (us to win) but I feel that maybe we have too many who are doing their own job without relaying the information to each other.

Is this CC's fault? Maybe.

All I know is some players are unsure of thier role as Gilmore has said and this seems to be the case when I watch them play.

I'm not a huge fan of Gilmore but maybe his potential is not being fulfilled because of the differing opinions of his role by the coaching staff and maybe we are struggling as a team also because of this.

i cant find the quote but i did read a story about paul medhurst and one of the things he said was he knew his role at collingwood and it was very clear what the coaches wanted him to do. it sounded like a bit of a backhander to CC

I have to admitt at 3/4 time against bulldogs I noticed CC holding up the old white board and shufffling things around and calmly explaining..something,while over in Eades huddle it looked like a good ole passionate rev up.I thought at that point it was too late for statistics and strategy etc.etc. they needed to just be reminded what was at stake and inspire the crap out of them the way it looked like Eade was doing to his team.

Gimore's a wally. Why would he go to footy on the road, which is basically a 6PR show for eagles supporters, and bag the coaching staff?

Ofcourse his role is going to vary depending on where he plays. When he's in the ruck he'd be told to run around and try to hurt his opposing player with his pace and endurance. When he's at half forward he'd be told to present up onto the wing, and when he's given a run with role he'd be told to stick with his man.

If Gilmore can't change his game to play a variety of roles he is even worse than I thought.

Dom, just stop and look beyond the Gilmore thing for a minute.

I makes a lot of sense. I don't think we've ever look well drilled. The team hardly ever looks like its on the same page. There has to be some explanation. Maybe this is it.

As I keep saying I do not rate Gilmore highly as a player but what he has said does make sense.

Players look lost on the field.

Players like Drum which I do rate can not even play in one position for Perth, looks lost and have gone backwards.

I think there is something in Gilmore's words that do point towards a problem within the coaching.

Daniel Gilmore

.

I absolutely knew you were going to say him. From what I've heard, Daniel doesn't like "to be told". How accurate that is, I'm not sure, but CC certainly gave him every opportunity to become part of the 22. I have heard that he's not an easy player to coach, because he like to do a lot of things his own way.

That said - it would make sense. It's all very well having an assistant taking on the main responsibility of each group of players, but they have to all be on the same page, so to speak, with the game plan, the roles, movements, etc - and there has to be one person devising the whole plan, calling the ultimate shots and pulling it altogether into one cohesive gameplan / team unit. That, of course, must be the Head Coach.

This is the exact problem.

I mentioned this last year and again this year. CC has NO PASSION!

He cannot gee up the boy's when needed, he sticks to explaining tactics and strategy and DOES NOT GET TO THE HEART OF THE MATTER.

Boring, boring, boring and the players know it. They don't want to play for him.

I agree, but I'd say it's because Connolly doesn't get the most from each player, so we end up having 18 individuals out there instead of a team. We'd have atleast 2, probably 3 more assistants now than we did in 2004, but the problems we saw in 2004 are still problems today.

There's no passion for the jumper, there is very little respect for the coach, and there are discipline issues on and off the field. The number of assistants has nothing to do with it IMO. Malaxos (whatever his role is now?) and Broadbridge are poor coaches though, and need to be replaced by guys who played the game this century. Not sure about big Earl and K. O'D. but I like Harv's and Germo.

Back on Gilmore, I'd delist him if Browne and Haddrill are 100% fit and playing well at the end of August. Pacey midfielders and fullbacks are more important than 6 foot 2 ruckmen.

I was just wondering today, if anyone had a players perspective on what was going on.
I had heard Medder's comments, and I don't think it was an open backhander at Freo, it was more a compliment to his new club, and the way he was being coached.

I've been non-commital about CC's coaching, he really does seem like a nice guy, which makes it hard to 'knife' him. But if he can't co-ordinate the Assistant Coaches, who he recruited, and get the best out of a pretty reasonable list, then it's time we brought in someone who can.

Drummy's a top bloke too.

Most of the coaches who win premierships seem like w@nkers, Paul Roos is the only one who springs to mind who looks like a genuine nice guy. Peter Rhode, Grant Thomas, Danny Frawley and Chris Connolly are proof that footballers don't respond when the coach is one of the boys.

I think you have a point there Dom. Or at least instil a sense of fear\motivation to play to their 101%

Ahh so it's w***ers we're after.

I can finally understand where the Suma for coach brigade are coming from.
