For mine, we have played too many taggers, and had too defensive a midfield under Connolly. This could certainly have been to do with a lack of class in the midfield, but I think that has improved, with a fit Hase, Crowley, Peake and Schammer next year, and with Doris Palmer's recruitment.
I think we need 2 taggers only, one big tagger, one small tagger. I nominate J Carr for the smaller tagger, and Dodd for the bigger tagger. This leaves Crowley and M Carr either earning a spot as an attacking midfielder in their own right, or in the WAFL. For me, Crowley (back to his 06 form hopefully)starts in the centre, M Carr plays WAFL. J Carr plays his best footy as a niggler, and I think Dodd plays his best on the Embley/Burton/ types. Thoughts?

Yea your probably right there. 2 of our better runners were injured for half the season (peake, schammer) and hase wasnt himself with his injury.

I cant see Matt Carr playing more than a handful of games in 2008. Nothing against the guy but positions will be up for grabs during the pre-season and first few rounds of the season proper. Matt just seems to be close to that fringe area, probably inside the 25 but not 22.

Crowley has to be played in an attacking role. He is too dangerous to be a tagger.

With Dodd, i thought he did reasonably well down in defence this past season, even on guys like Riewoldt. Yes Nick did get on top but id say more by the fact of some very ordinary umpiring decisions - doddy couldnt do a thing right all night.

Spot on??? I don't get the logic. You think Connolly should't have played the "taggers" and instead should have played.....? Who were the taggers?

Peake, Schammer, Crowley and an unfit Hasleby as you point out were only occassionally available and not fully fit, and are the source of improvement for our midfield for next season that you suggest. But if you are criticising Connolly for the midfield last season you actually have to suggest players who were available.

Guys like Matty Carr & Ma. Johnson will be very handy if [lets hope not] unfortuately injuries start to eat into the side. At least we'll have some experience to bring in...
Not ideal.. but better than having hack rookies a side like Richmond has...

i definetly think mark johnson will be a regular in 08, and i still rate matt carr, he may not be in the best 22 but he still has a bit to offer, his game against west coast this year still rates as one of my favourite games by a dockers player

Dodd is Brownlow material when he gets to play on those guys. When they drop forward he always gets his fist in to spoil. We call him the fist-of-death.com. When the players are of the Burton or Embley ilk, they are bound to try and attack and push forward, but when they do this, he always rebounds and plays off them, racking up uncontested possessions while they sit in the forward pocket waiting for something to happen.

Schammer will be Brownlow medallist this year by the way, just in case you didn't know. True story that.

how many career brownlow votes do they have between them? Has Dodd ever recieved a Brownlow vote. Dodd is a quality utility to have, however he would not be one to ever poll very well one would think.

Schammer can definately catch the umpires eyes but I can't see him winning a Brownlow.

As was the case with Solly playing all games(when not rubbed out) the same will be the case with Bomber Johnno and dare i say kepler they weren't drafted to sit in the Wafl.

Kepler will take Rash thornton's spot in the back half on a third or 4th best forward.

Bomber Johnno will be contesting Macca's spot.

Agree with you Josh plays his best footy as a tagger. Big Carr's days are numbered in the best 22 with second chance, bomber peake, bryron & haze all now fit(touch wood). Not to mention fossie & palmer pushing for midfield roles. Then there is Belly- where does he play - mainly forward??

Blacky's postion in the early part of the season must be in doubt with the re- occurence of his hip injury requiring another op

Where does happy fit now that big bird is back and the drafting of Josh head who is of similar build to happy also a left footer and dare I say a better kick?
and plays wing/half back?

What about Dessie - missed last 4 games 2007- could be under the pump to be in the RD 1 clash? Where does he play - forward?

Solly, Tarantino, Pav, Wiz, Big bird/Nockers using their height resting forward pocket- that leaves one spot? Haven't mentioned Drummy.

Harvey has a very pleasant head ache looming- bring on Mar 22nd

I think throughout Connolly's reign, even when we were going very well, our midfield thought about nullifying the opposition first, and getting the ball 2nd. i hope that will change with a bit more talent available, and with a new coach.
Specifically I want J Carr played as a tagger, not a taggee!

If Johnson and Bradley can play as well and consistently as Solomon, then they will be very deserving of their spot. I don't think Harvs will be doing them any favours - if they are in the 22 they will have earnt it.

I agree I have been thinking that for some time now we only need two taggers in the mid-field at the most. Personally I think Josh Carr should be our number 1 tagger and Ryan Crowley our number 2 tagger and that's all we need.
