Must admit in my 20s I would be doing the twirl, the side to side, then chew them down and put in another one.

very cool, but the dude in that gif is doing too much. you need to be cool and relaxed about it, a bit of side-to-side and chewing, mixed with a bit of lazily hanging out your mouth.

every pair of knickers from here to albuquerque will need changing

In certain movies? Yeah, cool:

In real life, you'd look like an absolute tool walking around with one in your mouth.

this is exactly what I look like, as I sit in the car and wait for Girlfriend #7 to finish her Victoria's Secret photoshoot

What about restaurants? Is it ok to use them in front of everyone else or is discreet the go?

toothpick dangling from lips, burping loudly, belt unbuckled, leaning back in chair, berating the wait staff for not allowing you anymore booze....it's the only way to behave.

One of my best mates just had his stomach sliced open from the bottom to about 3 quarters up because he accidentally ate a tooth pick in his food. campaigner obviously didn't know how to chew as it's still whole. Seen this trend a little more lately though.
