Top 20 Prospects at the New Year

I don't doubt Farren's ability. He's a clever footballer.

Right now, there are three things hanging over his head. Firstly, as you mentioned, height. He's great with the contested ball in the TAC Cup, but at that size, he'll be dwarfed in the contest at AFL level. Secondly, I'm not sold on his pace. I don't have any figures to work with, but he just doesn't seem to have Christensen's acceleration. Finally, I think he lacks kicking penetration which is a quality that importance is increasingly being placed on.

He's got a full season to prove people wrong, so let's hope he can.
i cant agree on a lot of that with priest .
I rekon he has pace to burn and if anything that is christensens achilles he's not super quick . Christenson is a great reader of the play and he tends to rest in the right spots that aloow him to pick up the footy. Not saying he's slow in general but compared to priest i believe he is Priest was probably not fit early in the season but built into it i saw some amazing things he did with pace later in the year.I think his kicking is also a strength . Mind you i didnt see alot of his games.
But as you said hieght may kill hill him .

I assume you're talking about Brad Mangan.

At the moment, I'm a bit put off by his testing, and I assume it was that that stood in the way on the draft day.

He does read the game well though, and he might just come into his own in a slightly less star studded team.
Yeah brad it is i was very impressed with his hands a good strong mark and good in a contest although his decision making was one thing that i thought he lacked he burnt a few blokes on good leads so probably needs to develop the team side of it . But i rerally rate him on a lot

Priest definitely has better acceleration than Christensen.. check Priests runs from the back pocket in the grand final. he absolutely rocketed out of the back half

Those being a Size of a Medium Forward might Hurt his chances of being a 1st Rounder.

excellent post, good to see someone has been getting geared up for draft week already! :p

not sure if it has been mentioned yet, but John Butcher has had a hip surgery during the summer, not sure what effect that may have this season though.

will be back running shortly IIRC. won't have much of a pre season but i'm pretty sure he'll be right to go round 1 of the TAC cup season. now, i'm not saying that i believe anybody is ever a sure thing of being drafted but i think Butcher needs to worry about hitting prime around the Nationals as a priority and the earlier rounds of the TAC cup aren't too much of a concern. he's well and truly on the radar of recruiters now and so just needs to put his best foot forward when it matters.

just on a side note, Gippsland Power has got 12 members in the Vic Country squad this year. phenomenal effort. had only 5 or 6 last season IIRC. (being Heath, Heyne, Carr, Stevens and Butcher) may have forgotten someone but i don't think i have

Just on Bastinac, I am one of his good mates, and I hate saying this about him, but I feel he has alot to work on before he is even being considered for a top 20 chance, he is very very good working forwards, but needs to work on working on his defensive side of his game. he is also very very light, so a little bit of time in the gym wouldnt go astray either, he has lots of upside, hos field kicking is exceptional, he is a very very good handballer, is a very good tackler, and is a great leader, so he does have lots of upside, if he can work on those few points, then he will be right up.

I agree i dont think he's a top 20 chance his size puts in with a lot of blokes and he's not as clean quick or a heavy builder of possies as many others in his size range for mine . he's seems to have a good attitude
but probably doesnt have to many special things about him . He's one thats gonna have to work his bum off to make himself stand out this year.

He's a favourite of mine, that's why he snuck over the line. Realistically, picking a top 20 at this stage is ridiculous, it's just a bit of fun with a case of Grolsch involved at the end of it. For instance, I reckon Liam Tobin might bolt this year, but right now, there's not much reason to think that at all; he had hamstring problems for almost all last year.

I love his consistency, the fact that he can get it when it doesn't look like he will, and then he doesn't have the old under 18 habit of doing something that looks nice but is absolutely useless.

As for his size, I'm not at all concerned. He's 182cm tall, could well be taller now. Height is the main thing to me. Luke Rounds, who would be athletically superior but not as natural a footballer in my book, got drafted at 46 in a superior draft at 181cm and 75kg, so I don't think there's too much to worry about. Clubs are willing to back in their strength and conditioning coaches these days if the guy's good enough.

On a side note, his placing in the Stingrays' B&F shows the coaches are behind him as a player, and I think that's fairly valuable.

That's where I'm coming from with it.

To be honest, I know very little about Murray at all.

Only seen them in regular season matches a couple of times in the last couple of years. They just seem to end up off my radar.

Personally, I've held the opinion that Farren Priest's pace is in the same mould of Jamie Sheahan's; he looks faster than he is. It seems I could well be off the mark, and for Farren's sake, I hope I am.

As for Christensen, I fancy his acceleration, but my comparison with Priest could well be off.

top read Vandelay:thumbsu: definitely rate you as a credible poster on junior footy after reading that:thumbsu:

Maverick Weller is one i reckon should be in the 20 though. elected a captain (along with Stevens) at A.I.S this year and he is a solid footballer. not a major problem though, just something i'd have different.

110% driving the Stevens bandwagon next year:thumbsu: he's a gun:thumbsu:

Maverick's a 2010 prospect, misses out by 2 months. What a gem though, I think the Gold Coast will fancy him.

I think the Stevens bandwagon will fill up very quickly, he's exceptional. I wanted to put him higher than 6, but decided not to get carried away. I've claimed him as my man amongst a few mates, good to hear I'm not the only one.

Nathan Vardy, another man on my radar, was in the squad last year.

If he's grown a few cms, he could be round the mark come draft day.

dont get me wrong. he has ALOT, going right for him, his sublime disposal, his superior work rate. just those couple of things that i think will hold him back, although ,as you said, he has been playingu18 football pretty much all last year as another. What are your thoughts on young James Cottrell from Stingrays. seen much of him.

I'd reckon he'd be a bit faster that Bundy but certainly agree that height may be an issue. I've seen him tear games apart and certainly has improved his consistency. Phil Bunn set him some challenges, and to his credit he's responded to a degree that he co-won the TAC POTY medal. A top 20 would still be surprise though.

The other Murray player Mango will also be interesting to watch along with Farren.

which 12 got into the VC squad this year Bourky? Butcher and Stevens are obvious ones of course, and Carr has been talked up a bit this year around my neck of the woods lol

i don't have the names of all the players to be honest, but i was informed by one of the selected players that there were 12 in the squad, so i'd take it they'd know. if i had a stab right now i'd say

Stevens, Butcher, Carr, Weston, Vardy, Golby.. would all be amongst the 12.

i'll try and get a hold of all 12 at some point soon

as for Carr, he's a great chance of getting picked up this season. a lot of the talk you've been hearing is quite justified. obviously not a shoe in or anything but if he has a great season in 09' i don't see why he won't be selected come late november

Yep - He's one of my picks for the year. Looks like a very, very solid player.

Also comfortably takes the title of "best name in the draft this year", much like Steele Sidebottom last year, and Patrick Dangerfield the year before.

chances are we will get the first 2 picks in the draft so im hoping we grab scully and butcher. would love to get stevens somehow aswell.

Jeez - You not Expecting much then

Tom Scully looks good.
Kane Lucas impressed me when i watched him at the champs.
Not a big fan on Fitzpatrick tho well hope the pies don't draft a ruck man with first round.
