Gourdis ran 2.83
Cyril rioli and freos hill have both also recorded 2.83.

Pearce holds the 20 meter sprint record at 2.79
Ash smith at west coast ran 2.80.

Fastest at geelong would be wojo and byrnes.

Atkinson ran 2.73,
Davey, Jetta and Dempsey have all run 2.75

The topic being debated over is somewhat incomplete.

Quickest over what distance? 10m, 20m, 100m, 400m, 4km?
On a running track or under AFL match conditions? In a straight line or around obstacles? From a standing or running start?

I'm sure if the various contests were held, several different winners would emerge.

Someone else who no1 has mentioned (and probably no1 has heard of) is John Williams, a rookie at Essendon, I can guarantee he is in the top 3 over 100m, can't play AFL but got picked up for his athleticism, freakish stuff.

Also fastest ever was James Walker at Freo

Yeah i didn't think it was low 10's i thought it was around the 12 second mark, but i could be remembering wrong. I know he's freakishly quick though.

Edit: Sorry i just checked back and he ran a 10.8sec for 100m and 50.1sec for 400m. Damn

Ran against Ruzz in Achilles cup in 2004 (sa private school athletics championship) in the 100m and 200m. Never run agisnt him before, and thoguht i was half a chance to win it.

He Ran 10.7 for the 100m. The guy was unbelievably quick. He'd have to be the quickest in the competition.

Jumpin' John!!!
aka John "the rig" Williams. Pasty skinny little bugger with curly hair.

Funny dude to watch, stands on people's heads then misses the footy. From QLD. Possibly the worst guy I've seen in an Essendon jumper.

Has Naitanui been mentioned? (I've not read any of the thread)

But he would absolutely dominate in sprints - and very very few would be able to run him down, at least over 20 or 30 metres.

As for Coughlan, witnessing both - Gourdis isn't a superior athlete to NN.

Naitanui, Wojak, Collyer (or some debutant from Essendon) would all be right up there in the mix.

Speed is overrated... acceleration is much more important. If you can get a good 10m sprint on and get away from your opponent then you don't need to be Usain Bolt not to get caught. Also, 100m sprints are useless for calculating speed of an AFL player. They might be a slow starter and then make speed after 50-60 metres... When is that helpful in an AFL game?

I was easily the quickest. I ran the 100m in 10.7 seconds and was absolutely devastating on he lead as a young player. Unfortunately I have been injured very regularly. It is a shame because I would have been a star. I am still on the list but Big Jack and Big Dawes are doing ok so it's VFL for now. I wonder if I am still very fast..Hmmmm.......

I also ran the 400m in around 50 seconds.

Id have you back in our side any day Rusler :thumbsu:

:D

Wrong
Gourdis got better results then Nic Nat at draft camp in the vertical jump, repeat 30 metre sprints and 20 metre sprints.
They are both total freaks for their size but Gourdis slightly edges him, and when he gets elevated from the rookie list after round 11 he will step straight in to FB and will perform very well.

Armfield, Hampson, Garlett, Russell and Yarran would be our quickest players.

Hampson is the quickest player on our list ahead of Russell and Armfield who are faster than Deledio over 20 metres.

The low quality video doesn't do Hampson's pace any justice.

My reaction watching it live was WTF!

Who cares how fast Brett Deledio is? He's a dud! And before all you Richmond fans shout me down and say he's won the B&F, just remember that someone had to win it. I think the runner came 3rd!

Aaron Davey is super quick in terms of football speed. Probably not able to hold it for the 100 tho.

Isn't the thread called top 5 quickets players?

You sir are a ****ing idiot with no common knowledge of the game.

Ouch! What a stinging retort!

I didn't expect such a well thought out and frankly intellectual response from one who is quite clearly unrivalled in all matters football...

thanks for setting me straight.

(Biased, yes of course :) I am)

Should divide this into a couple of lists with a bit of overlap:

Quickest without ball:

Guys like Ballantyne and others who have super acceleration and are quick over first 10-20 i.e. get heaps of frees from running blokes down.

Quickest when carrying a ball which stuffs up pure runners biomechanics:

Hill
The Jettas
The Davey's

PS whoever posted that Dangerfield clip is dreaming. He's an awesome footballer but the first bloke in frame chasing him is Haselby who is a plodder

Atkinson is quicker than our Davey or Jetta.
Dempsey could have been a 400m Olympian apparently, someone had a source I read when he was being recruited.

Jobe watson has recorded 2.75 seconds for the 10 meter
Steward Dew ate a pie in 2.69 seconds
Sandilands fell over and recorded 1.34 for the 20 meter
