"Looking at the champion data scores is revealing:
http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ft_player_rankings?year=2012&rt=LA&st=SU

114.5 avg (14th in league) - Naitanui (19 games)
113.8 avg (15th in league) - Cox (21 games)
113.3 avg (17th in league) - Maric (20 games)
103.9 avg (34th in league) - McEvoy (15 games)
103.4 avg (37th in league) - Sandilands (10 games)
102.9 avg (39th in league) - McIntosh (7 games)
101.7 avg (46th in league) - Jacobs (19 games)
97.4 avg (64th in league) - Goldstein (18 games)
96.8 avg (66th in league) - Hale (20 games)
94.9 avg (76th in league) - Griffin (12 games)
94.3 avg (80th in league) - Jolly (16 games)
93.8 avg (84th in league) - Hudson (17 games)
92.8 avg (89th in league) - Giles (19 games)
91.1 avg (14th in league) - Kreuzer (19 games)"

But other stats are important (for ruckmen only):
7th in HOs for the year.
3rd for marks inside 50 (not including Roughead/Tippett).
1st for contested marks (not including Tippett)
1st for contested disposals
7th for disposals
7th in clearances
3rd in tackles
2nd in goals

So, I'm not sure.
He might be too high.
Where do you think he should be?

Looking at the WC board votes, not including the NA games they have voted him 10th or worse in 5/13 and there would probably be another 2 in the NA games

Is having only 12/19 decent or better games good enough to put someone in 16th?

It depends on those around him.
Has he been better than Hayes? Richards? McPharlin? Sewell?
In terms of ruckmen is he ahead of Maric?
How does his year compare to Cox or Jacobs?

No idea really, which is why I stopped doing this. He just stood out a bit because I wouldn't have thought he'd be top 30. Just ignore me because you'd know being a WC fan. Have seen bugger all of the Eagles in the second half of the season.

Just my opinion and I realise you've put alot of time and effort in but Mitchell is 6th favourite for the Brownlow.

He is the type of player that would attract the umpire's attention though, being high profile and all.
Have you seen many Hawthorn games this year?
I just feel he's influence has not been as great this year as it was last year.
Where do you see him coming in your best-and-fairest, that is the more interesting question?
I could see a Birchall-Lewis-Sewell or Roughead top 3 without Mitchell in it.

FYI, once the top 50 is up next week it is open to complete criticism.
I am happy to hear why you feel a player is being disserviced in my rankings.
We will try and work out where each player deserves to be.

How should we proceed with the finals series?
Should I just do a top 20 for the finals?

I think it will go Mitchell, Rioli from Sewell, Lewis, Buddy, Birchall, Guerra & Gibson.
Roughhead been off the boil the last 6 weeks.

Wouldn't have thought Tuck, Jones, Sewell & Swallow have been better than Mitchell this year.

I think Mitchell hasn't had a great year, he has had a number of really down weeks.

I don't have an issue with any of those above him

My two cents:

  • Deledio too high. Not a top 10 player & not ahead of Dangerfield and Pendles
  • Boyd too high. Definitely not ahead of Swan at the very least
  • NN a bit too high. But looking at what you posted earlier (and seeing us on the receiving end of him the other day) can't disagree with it too much
  • Pav still too low. Should be slightly ahead of McPharlin at least
  • Lewis too low. Has had a great year
  • Taylor Walker has had a better year than about 15 players on the list. Is not listed in the unluckies yet has kicked only two less goals than Buddy (and he is ranked #27th)

Second all of that

Thanks, will adjust accordingly.
Walker slipped through the cracks and should be on the unluckies.

Why don't you back your own thoughts instead of others? It is your top 50 after all.

Deledio is averaging about 28 touches a game with 10 games over 30, he runs and carries the football, damages you by foot, kicks goals, tackles. He is top 10 and Pendles is not above him because he's missed a few games.

Don't worry, was more concerned about readjusting Boyd, NN, Lewis and Walker than Deledio.

From a Hawthorn perspective, you've done a pretty good job. My minor quibbles would be Birchall a bit high, Lewis a bit low and Roughie has probably dropped out now. I think, however, you've been a bit too harsh on Mitchell - dropping too many spots too fast after a slow start (coming back from injury) against Sydney.

Consider that he is the first tagged player in every single game this year in the top side.

Despite this, and missing a game, he has the most kicks, handballs, possessions, contested possessions, clearances, tackles and supercoach points for Hawthorn.
In fact, he is top 15 in the league for disposals (at higher eff than most above him), contested possessions, clearances and as an emphasis of his two way work, also tackles. Only 1 other player is as effective both ways - also top 15 for all of these (Andrew Swallow).
He is also leading the Hawthorn Board POTY voting and is top 15 in the AFLCA votes (1st at Hawthorn), HS POTY (1st at Hawthorn), Age POTY (1st at Hawthorn) and SEN POTY (1st at Hawthorn). I was not able to find an award where Mitchell was not top 15 in the league and 1st in the best side.

You mentioned profile and I actually believe it is expectations that lead to him being marked harder than most as 25 odd possessions (with a bunch of clearances and tackles) with a hard tag is seen as a quiet game or a win to the tagger. Particularly this year after the standard he set in 2011 -HS POTY, ABC POTY, 30 brownlow votes (2nd), 3rd AFLCA (missed games), etc. He hasn't been top 5ish like last year but he still has been very very good. I can only imagine how he would go if he didn't get the full focus of the opposditions tagger(s) every single week.

In summary, I think the above suggests 30th is a too low.

You mentioned profile and I actually believe it is expectations that lead to him being marked harder than most as he has not matched his year last year where he won POTY in several media awards, brownlow runner up, etc. I can only imagine how he would go if he didn't get the full focus of the opposditions tagger(s) every single week.

In summary, I think the above suggests 30th is a too low.

Would you suggest 20ish is appropriate then?
