Ahead of the eagerly anticipated (ha ha) top 50's of Mike Sheahan and Robert Walls, I thought I'd beat them to the punch and make a top 50 of my own, just to see how hard it was, and if I get the crap bagged out of me.

1. Nathan Buckley
2. Anthony Koutoufides

6. Peter Bell
7. Shane Woewoedin

Probably could of put Paul Kelly in there, but I'm not sure he'll play many more games.

Wow, it's only been posted ten minutes and already two people violently disagree with it!

Now I know how Mike Sheahan feels.

I'm more worried about leaving players out altogether rather than whereabouts I put them.

Uhmm seriously Tom, Woodsy? In the top fifty?? Is he a relative or something???

Other than that yea not a bad attemept i guess. I wouldnt even want to try lol. My only glaring oversight is Jon Hay who really is the 'real deal'. Maybe swap your top five around Kouta Hird Buckley Carey and Voss on last years form. Im not a huge Woewodin fan (no dees fans not saying he cant play, just that i dont think hes top ten stuff yet) so id drop him down the list.

One question, wheres Silvangi? Or is he last centurys man lol!

Pretty good attempt.

Obviously, people are going to disagree with you on somethings. But everyone has their own opinion.

My list would be basically the same. Chris Grant and Ben Cousins would be higher. Maybe Brad Ottens as well.
Tony Woods - dont know what you were thinking. That was about the only one were you put in a shocker.

Apart from that pretty good.

cant believe that no essendon supporters have complained about golden boy hird and lloyd being ranked so lowly....... surely they would want them 1 and 2 respectively....

But seriously not a bad attempt.... you now know how mike feels as i'm sure sure your going to get plenty more comment from this...
and how can you possibly put tony woods in.... i mean did you get a free album from him or something.......

Give the guy a break

Picking the top 50 players in the league is pretty damn hard cause your always going to get people saying "what about soandso". It was fairly good, he missed some that should have been there but overall quite well done.

Cheers Vis

I dont see how you can put Tony Woods in front of those players there?? If thats the case then Nick Stevens should be up there as well. Other than that, you did a damn good efoort on what is a bloody hard thing to pick!

Not so concerned about Hird and Lloyd, I don't think Tom is far off with them. Hird is top 5, he got that right (Would probably move him up a couple of places, but I may be biased), would probably have Lloyd at the higher end of the top ten, maybe just outside. But I think that Fletcher definately deserves to be in the top ten. This bloke is playing unbelievable footy!

Not a bad attempt. Mike Sheahan's team is based on past performances. Eg. Silvagni, I know he's a great full back but he constantly makes the 50 even after an ordinary year by his standards. It's a 50 based on performance over a number of years, not of the previous year.

Well done Tom, very good attempt. I know I'm blue and white eyed, but if you're putting Holland as high as 17, you have to find room for Lance Whitnall. I'm sure there are other stories for players at other clubs if I could think about it hard enough, but he was a glaring ommission. Topped the marks last year and second in the goalkicking in the home and away season, third overall. All Australian last year, unlike Holland. And I can't have Woodsy there either (sorry Hawks fans - I do rate Chick very highly though!).

Still, a very good attempt and I can't disagree with you much at all.

Good effort
It'a hard task and that's always going to be people who disagree, but all in all it was a good effort.

It's hard to rank players, but you must have forgotten about Lance Whitnall. Also would you really prefer to have Nick Stevens and Tony Woods ahead of the likes of Garry Hocking, Mark Bickley, Wayne Schwass and Peter Riccardi?

Mark Bickley?

Surely not, he may have been a great captain/player in 97/98 but really doesn't rate today.

Gavin Wanganeen should have rated a mention.

Good effort but to have Creswell at 19 (???) and to not have Schwass in the 50? I'd swap Misiti and Mercuri. While Mercuri is classy Misiti is much more important to the Dons - I would rate him in their top 4 players (and pretty close to Lloyd in terms of importance). Not sure about Nick Stevens - he has the potential but hasn't really delivered to date. Bell at 6 seems an overly high ranking - he had a very good year last year (but Brent Harvey and John Blakey had comparable years).

This is with brown and gold glasses on but here goes.

Tony Woods has given a few of those 'names' a bath in the past year or so. None more so than Hocking - who is well on the way to past it.

And why pick on Holland when you are trying to Justify Whitnalls inclusion. _ surely there are other CHFs which could be targetter. Nick is not 'flashy' but he's very solid.

And a lot of Hawks fans are now seeing Jon Hay as the best player at Hawthorn. We think his (and Nathan Thompson's) name will be up there this year...

Um who won you best and fairest rooboy just out of curiosity for last year?

Thats probally why he is higher than David King!

So Sab just out of curiousity how come you have not replied to the bet I put to you... on freo's board... have a little guts... money where your mouth is Junior... in future... Don't offer a bet if you can't back it up...

Sab BTW... when was the last time Bell kicked five goals playing out of the middle... King does it all the time... but your allowed your opinion... even if it is wrong...

Pretty much agree with TD - pretty good attempt all in all (leaving aside Woods and absences noted).

I'm not game to do one myself (hats off for trying - its too hard to do it justice from London) but I would rate Kouta and Hird as joint top on last year's form, then Carey, Buckley, Voss and Grant in no particular order.

Putting on the red and black glasses...

Fletcher is top 10
Lloyd and Mercuri are both top 15
Misiti, Caracella, Blumfield, both Johnstons, Hardwick and Solomon on 2000 form should all be in at least the top 50 if not 40 - you can't tell me you'd say no to any of those guys... Heffernan and Wellman just miss out...

On other fronts, McKay and Ratten are both top 15 material but Whitnall needs to develop his game for longer IMHO.

Re: Wirra (like Kelly) - when fit - top 20 and higher - when injured - not in the top 50 I'm afraid.
