Has anyone else noticed that Jason Torney has taken a lot of good strong contested marks in the backline?

Maybe we need to try him up forward?

I reckon we tried it back in about 2003. Torney was playing top footy in the backlines, was shifted forward and his form fell away so badly that he ended up being dropped.

for all the threads about to materialise suggesting a change to our back six....(one of the few things that is working)......to make up for deficiencies elsewhere I say......

NO. NO, NO !

'cos before you know it we will have a dysfunctional fwd line, mid-field, AND backline.

Torney will be needed more than ever back there with the Stiffmeister out.. :(

Yep I agree MD, however, if our forward line, and particular Trent, is looking rubbish again this week then I would do a straight swap Trent for Kenny. Trent seems to turn into a different player when down back, all class and poise. At least we know Kenny can take a contested mark.

Could we take a risk & put Ben Rutten up forward in a swap for Trent & leave McGregor on Brown ??

There is no Lynch this time.

& yes MD i too hate messing around with a settled back six but we need to win games as well as save them.

Torney = backman
Torney <> forward

Bring in Ladhams V the Lions , small forwards are the way to go against Brissy and Ladhams can kick a goal and can kick with distance. Run a decoy forward to get big Mal out of the square.

Perhaps even play McLeod/Edwards at FF and rotating on the ball.

Just on Mcgregor ad nauseum... as part of the back line each individual has a team role, and when players are used to each others role and abilities it works real good. While McGregor is struggling , he is part of a fully functional unit that is presenting week in and week out.It is not the back lines fault we are losing games.Yes Ken is struggling but others are rising to the challenge and I would be loath to break up the defence to fix the forward line.

Please read this before suggesting ANY defender go forward. We have forwards in the SANFL ..use them

all I'm saying is if theres a problem with the fwd line....lets address that without messing with the backline.....the only reason it appears that we're trying to save games is that the fwd line isn't keeping the ball in IMO.... :(

PC & MD who would you play in the forward line this week. If they bring in Stevo they must also bring in either Watts or Meeson IMHO.

I personally would drop Welsh for Meeson. I would play Burton Perrie Hentschell Meeson and 2 crumbers from the general team. If not Meeson then certainly Watts.

Burton next to Perrie at the CHF line and Meeson/Watts next to Hentschell in the FF line. Burton is your roving option while Perrie sits in one spot.

Hentschell is the mover in the FF area while Meeson/Watts sticks to his FP quadrant.eg As the ball comes in depending on the area it is kicked from then the options are always one of 2.

I would not play Stevens ahead of Meeson. If they choose Watts over Meeson I would have no problem with that

I think I posted elsewhere on Sunday that I would like to see an overhaul.

Stevo, Trentschel, Ladhams
Edwards, Perrie, Burton.

Let me start by saying that the positions I have some players in are probably not their ideal positions, but rather part of the multi stepped process in arriving at an optimal fwd line with what we've got to work with.

Welsh needs to go back to the SANFL to kick some goals and get some touch.
Stevo needs to come in so we can definitively say by the midseason bye whether the game has passed him or not....I would like that decision made and out of our system....He needs to be close to goal IMO to accomodate his lack of pace and aging body.
I think Trentschel is being lost on the flanks at the moment and needs to go to FF to be more involved....... Good hands, great lead - make him a focal point for a while.
Ladhams has done everything asked of him and not-withstanding some lifestyle choices, is in the top 10 at our club in terms of talent. Very potent goal sneek close to goal, and a semi-instinctive crummer.
Perrie needs to stay out at CHF, get him out there and lets work to his strengths being his work rate and ground coverage ....not keep him close to goal because his ability to take a pack mark and shoot for goal are his weaknesses.... Burton and Edwards...HFF - both are part of the midfield rotations and can provide shots on goal.

I know there is a big push for Watts.....and I want to get the youngsters in as quickly as anyone....but I just don't think he is ready yet.....Meeson maybe should be next cab off the rank if Stevo can't do the business by the mid-season break....The Meese would be in front of Watts IMO.

As I said....some of the positioning isn't ideal....but I think we need to do what we can to mix it up and find a serviceable combination......but IMO that doesn't include robbing from the backline......my 2c...... :)

ps.......part of my thinking is that we need to arrive at the end of the season with a few players out of our system...and I agree with PC that part of it is about winning, and partly about progressing the squad with the introduction of new players.....that's why I advocate doing the Stevo and Ladhams option before Meeson, or Watts

It's a difficult juggling act...winning and also moving the team forward in terms of our future. To be honest, at the moment we seem to be more focused on winning. Against the Dees we only had one player 21-or-younger (Reilly) in the lineup and only one dude with less than 25 games experience (Skippy).

We don't seem to be taking any risks at the selection table.

Would be nice to see some of our 'kids' rotated here-and-there off the bench. I'm not suggesting that we bring them all in at once. I just feel that we haven't quite got the "present versus future" team balance right.

Still, I could be talking out of my arse... :p

p.s. unless the Meese came in as a ruckman, I'd have Watts ahead of him. Sorry to disagree bigfella...love your new avatar, by the way.

Rutten?
Hudson?

Both less than 25 games. You cant just chuck em all in at once...we have enough 20-60 game players to develop...

I'd only chuck 'em in if our season was over .. our season is still truly alive ATM

Yo, or Roo/Birdman changing at FF. Remember a few years ago when we played a small forward line against Brisbane? They took Mal off for more than half the game because he couldn't match up. Can't remember what year. Anyone?
