Don't think I will be voicing my opinion on here for a while 😂 bit rough with the feed back

I thought we looked good this year when Bont played a bit behind the ball. Second game against GWS stands out. I think he’ll spend more time there from now on like Pendlebury.

Pendles is 37 and didn’t move to half back until last year. Bont is 29 and still in his prime. We ain’t winning anything if he’s playing down back. Our midfield is aging and doesn’t bat as deep as it used to

Flanders has requested a trade.

Not a priority but I wouldn’t mind him at half back.

If he wants more mid minutes I wouldn’t want us to go for him, don’t rate him highly in the middle
I would take a punt on him. Treloar and Libba nor far from the end. Sanders no certainty to stay on when Tassie enters the fray.
We should be in the win now mode so worst case he is a seasoned AFL body half back upgrade on JJ. Can be a rotation mid who knows when Treloar and Libba are done might be a mainstay.
Worth exploring IMO

If North were interested in Windhager and possibly losing Simpkin, I don’t see why they’re not interested in Flanders as well.

I hope Saints get him, Aleer & Ryan though..purely because I’d think it would make for a pretty exciting outfit…jk

It would help towards getting Wilkie

Don't get the hate on Simpkin. Not saying he is a game changer but a lot of his numbers are similar to Noah Anderson's, and in a much weaker midfield. Anderson has Miller and Rowel to take the heat off him. Simpkin has LDU and their stats are pretty similar.

In terms of Merret, he could be the perfect replacement for Ads.

Both would be nice to have, but they are players we just cannot afford to offer a first round pick for, that’s the issue. We have other glaring issues down back we need to fix first.

Yes I agree with you. It was out of order.

I'm not sure if Bont to defence is going to be the best solution but it's something I've pondered and posted on. It's certainly worth a civilised conversation. It doesn't deserve put downs.

It worked well against the Giants this year. He played not so much as a KPD but as a deep midfielder. They didn't get too many slingshot goals or a string of quick goals like we often concede against the better teams. Bont still got a heap of the ball and multiple score involvements. And we won that game by 88 points.

Curiously they didn't put him back in that role again in subsequent games. It doesn't have to be every game, but I think we might have missed an opportunity there.

For all the remarks like "why would you put your best midfielder in defence?" I argue that if the net result is it makes us stronger and we win more games against the top teams, then it is definitely worth trying. There is no rule that says your best player has to be in the midfield. Even if that's where he made his name. You play him where it gives the team the greatest net benefit.

There might be some incidental benefits too. For example giving our aspiring midfielders a few more midfield rotations (eg Freijah, Sanders, Hynes or whoever) so they aren't the next young guns to be asking for a trade to Geelong, Brisbane or Tasmania.

From a list management perspective it makes sense too. If we can't (or won't) invest in A-grade defenders then why not dip into our overflowing pool of midfielders? It might imply some role and tactical adjustments but that could also be a positive - it makes us more flexible and less predictable. Hence harder to plan for.

Stick at it mate. It's good to have some divergent opinions aired here.

Bont would IMO be more valuable in defence and I think it's time we try something new. Would love Butts as well but seems iffy right now. Bont going back strengthens our backline and opens up an on ball spot too. Feel like it is the big move Bevo needs to experiment with.
I would move Bont to full back and bring back Dunkley to play ruck for a record $2.5 million dollar contract. Play English as a half back flanker and we are certain to get another flag under Bevo. Coaching moves of the century IMO.

Ignore the haters.
Good point about ignoring the haters. The idea of moving back Bont to the backline is not a bad one, however, now is not the time. It would be a good move in a role such as Pendles but later in his career. Bont is too valuable in the middle atm. In a few years time he could be a good forward or back ala Pendles.

Pendlebury spent chunks of 2016 and 2018 at half back. I think Bont will get used around the ground more in the not too distant future.

There will come a time but not yet. That could change as early as 2027 if we manage to land Butters, and Sanders and Freijah can continue to develop

I’m not against Serong, although I haven’t seen enough of him to have a truly informed opinion. He’s younger than JOD and only a year older than Buss so it’s unlikely he’ll be the saviour of our backline. He probably would have played a fair few games for us this year

He’s not breaking into their best team any time soon but Hawthorn don’t have a heap of depth as key defenders. An aging Frost, Blanck and Serong. Will be interesting if he decides if now is the time to force his way out or if he is happy to stay as the backup for a little while longer

This guy is uncontracted and would be cheap

I'm surprised as well. I saw a couple of Box Hill games this year given we were supposedly interested in Blanck, and Serong looked a better player each time.

At the very least he plays the role we shoved Coffield into for a bunch of games this year.
