Lobb only lost 13% of his defensive 1v1s in 2024. He’s not as bad as many make out.
He's very good across HB and average if dragged deep.

That's why some of us want to look at a mature KPD who can play deep. The flow-on effect is allowing Lobb to play his best football.

I can’t believe how badly we’ve handled this trade period.

We finished 9th with one of the most unbalanced lists in the comp. Defence has been our biggest issue and we’ve done nothing through trading to fix it.

We had one job.....bring in support down back. Gardner is depth at best and we still don’t have a genuine interceptor or key defender. We threw everything at Wilkie, missed, and that was apparently the whole plan. No backup target, no creative move, nothing.

We didn’t get aggressive with picks, didn’t use futures and didn’t move fringe players. We’re rolling into another season with the exact same defensive problems that cost us games all year and hoping something magically improves.

Every year we talk about the backline being the issue and every year we pretend internal development will fix it. It hasn’t and it won’t.

This trade period should’ve been about fixing the spine and balancing the list. Instead, we’ve come out of it without a key defensive upgrade. No intercept marking, no lockdown size, no extra rebound.....I'm ignoring Budarick as he's a direct replacement for doc...

I don't know how any of our supporter base can be remotely happy with this.

I think we need to defend better as a collective group not just our KPD’s. Which I have no doubt we’ll be working on over summer.
We struggled during the year to defend ground ball adequately. Many many times.

Budarick helps there. Not playing immobile guys (sorry Coffield, it's not your fault the injury gods hate you) helps too.

Can you please change this to Maley, as I had no idea who the **** you were talking about????:smile::smile:
I had to look it up too - Maley not Marley.

To the eyeball the guy is the F50 equivalent of Gardner - limited footballer with a massive ticker who never drops his head. Seems like a "good teammate" type.

He is a more athletic John Butcher

I understand us not using any F1/F2 picks based on the prospect of a Butters trade next year (though it would have been great if a trade could've happened this year). You're right about the lack of aggressiveness towards improvement though. We know what areas needed improvement, and as things stand we have only addressed one of our 3 main areas of need

AFL will be kicking in the balance but it will never come out.

No way JUH takes that pay cut no way.

The $250K will add to the good story should it eventuate.
He has to. It’s that or nothing. There can’t be another year with us doing nothing. He’s burnt that bridge.

Butcher did play one really good game at AFL level.

Guess the opponent...

How were we not aggressive?

Went for Wilkie in the race for JSos and Butts being agressive doesn't mean you get them,

Jsos is not worth his contact Butts isn't worth a first,

Geelong were aggressive for Curnow and didn't get him (they didn't want to overpay and use their good players)

We were agressive we just didn't get any success from it

I’m not on the narrative that we have handled this badly, why on earth would we target substandard a KPD if they didn’t meet our needs, you can all but guarantee if we grabbed someone like Butts or Frost and it didn’t work out this board would be in meltdown.

Sure we need a CHB but we don’t need a substandard one. If we can’t get a top quality one because they don’t want to move then what do we do?

It’s not as if anyone of note has moved elsewhere and we missed out, I wouldn’t want Jiath, wouldn’t want Aleer, wouldn’t want Silvagni (even though the club did) .

We had a crack at Wilkie . The crows value Butts way too high. All the other chat on here has been fanciful. We aren’t going to poach a top talent from elsewhere and compromise our crack at Butters next year.

The club needs to pivot, we need to either work out a way to get Croft to play some minutes down back, inject Smith into the backline , get W.Darcy up to speed pretty quick or find a State league gem ready to go.

I'm happy to chip in money for Will to go to all you can eat buffets everyday to add some bulk!

I'm very interested in Elijah Scoble from Perth in the WAFL. Only 20, already in the WAFL team of the year and third in Perth's B&F, has played on AFL players.

I think if we were told our 2025 trade period would be quiet and hold assets but in 2026 we would land a top 5 player in the AFL and most in demand RFA in the league we would certainly take it.

Would love a defender but structural changes just as important, referencing the Crows game was hard to watch every Darcy ball having 3 Crows defenders jumping and ready to crash whilst Lobb is in a paddock with TT as the only 2 players in their 50.
