don't understand why you're having so much difficulty understanding the concept of best available.
I'm not literally saying go and find Tom Stewart, but at least recruit the best available defender instead of another small guy who can't kick.

if you read the post I replied to, it said weightman is due back in the middle of next year. That's about 2 years out of the game and two full preseason missed

Right so we drafted Naughton and he became a full forward, we drafted Marcus Adams, but Brisbane took him, we traded for Alex Keath, who retired last year, we have had good defenders, but they a highly sort after commodity at the moment. We have some coming through, but as we all know talls take time.

We don’t all have academy picks like Brisbane some of us have to play by a different set of rules.

There’s no way they trade him this year

They’re going to do everything to try and convince him to stay after next year.
This. 100%.
Zak knows it, Port and the Dogs know it.

Port have one of the biggest contracts in afl history in front of him as of mid this year and he approached them a few months later asking to see if they’d be interested in trading him home.

They’ll hold him to contract and spend the next year convincing him to stay.

The only thing I’m confident on if it isn’t Port, it’s us. 50/50 right now.

No, the best available player.
There's a difference between "random" and best available.
Your club in 2017 thought Tom Stewart wasn't better than what the club already had. Turns out they were wrong. Plenty more examples exactly like this: Sam Collins, Mark Keane, Luke Ryan, Jeremy McGovern, etc.

Your defenders got massacred by Fremantle in the final round and somehow you are still arguing against the idea of selecting the best available defender. This is under the pretext that they're not better than your current options, even though your club has probably passed on dozens of quality defenders over the past 10 years in the belief they didn't improve you enough. Strange rationale.

Who do you think is the best available defender?

There seems to be too much smoke for him not to leave at the end of next season. But I wouldn’t be totally surprised if he’s still at Port in 2027.

Surely if it’s another poor season from Port that’ll help us.

I think it's past that point. I don't think anything will convince him to stay.

He's had that massive contract from Port for months and he's not signed and he's gone further to approach them enquiring about a move back to Victoria.

I would say the ship has sailed and Port are now in the denial/bargaining phase. Up to them how they want to play it but it's just delaying the pain.
