The AFL should revise what we got and give us another first round pick this year and take one of Melbournes away 😉

Budarick deal could come down to the final minutes of trade month. And there's nothing we can do about it.

Day 3 and there’s nothing happening on the trade front. What a surprise. Media and BF filling the vacuum with idle speculation. BAU.

Reading the last few pages you’d think Sanders has already cleared out his locker and is striding through the exit door to his waiting uber. A lot of rationalisation going on. (“He was never really that good was he?”)

In our abundant idle moments can someone join the dots for me please:

Why did Bevo say last year (or was it 2023?) that Sanders was the most talented youngster to come to the club in his time as coach? Or words to that effect. Did he really believe that he was more talented than say Richards and Darcy? Was it just spin to keep Ryley on side? A bit of local PR to fight back internal criticisms of the costly trade-up in the draft? Protection of a young highly rated but slightly underperforming kid from growing media criticism?

It never quite made sense to me. I can’t think why he’d depart from his usual honest takes.

If the rumours have any substance, I’d be interested in why Sanders would be willing to sign a multi-year with Adelaide but not with us.

What have I missed. What rumours? Adelaide have let their interest in Sanders be know in the most public of ways.

I would be stunned if Sanders / his manager weren't aware of this Adelaide interest, and at the least it isn't something he is considering.

Given Adelaides interest has been widely reported of course they'd be aware.

These things often get leaked for a reason and I imagine the Crows approached Sanders at some point over the last few weeks and potentially even the Dogs too and inquired about the possibility.

Its a fundamental of list management to look through other teams lists and try to identify talent that is on the fringes of opposition sides best 22. Or being played in positions that they are unsuited to due to the strength of the starting midfield brigade.

Ryley gets the benefit though if the trade doesn't come to fruition, he can claim he had no knowledge and is happy at the Dogs etc.

He doesn't have to comment on it one way or the other. He has the safety of a contract that runs through to the end of next season.

well, the "just going back to tassie part" is the point. If he was saying things like 'hell no, I want to stay at the bulldogs' then us supporters would be reluctant to trade him. But he isnt, hes publicly saying 'hmmm, yeah, tassie....'

It's not like he's spoken about much of anything in public since he was recruited. And what little he has said has as one would expect framed his time with us in a positive light.

So of course he's going to play his contract cards close to his chest and play us off against a potential move home to Tasmania. Any manager who instructs him to do otherwise would be negligent in their duties and not earring their 5%.

so if Sanders/we think that he wont be part of our long term plans, what is the benefit of continuing to sink investment into him for the next 2 years so that tassie can reap the long term rewards?

"If" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in this sentence.

What makes you think that a guy who played 21 games this year isn't part of our long term plans?

If butters wants to play with us for the next 10 years and Sanders doesnt, then it kind of writes itself, doesnt it?

Obvious statement is Obvious.

But this entire discussion is being built upon the foundations of an another club enquiring about one of our players. Something that literally happens every time list and player managers cross paths. Not as far as I can see his management shopping him around or his disaffection for our club.

I get the thirst for Butters and understand that the club is going to have to be very creative if he does somehow nominate us. But the frenzy of creativity being used to bring about this outcome is bordering on the fantastical.

In fairness, we already knew we were getting Croft as a first rounder that draft. Balancing him out with an inside mid would've seemed like a pretty balanced choice (still does for mine).
We’ve done well to address it but rejuvenating the midfield is still necessary with Libba, Treloar and Bont over 30.

Richards and Kennedy are mid aged (but we got Kennedy after Sanders) and then you have a big age gap down to Freijah etc.

Nothing at all wrong with taking a good midfielder. You can win a flag with a makeshift forward line or back line. Not so much midfield.

It was in the pre-season of 2024 so before he played a game in the AFL.

To be fair, Sanders looked great in those pre-season games and had good pre-season fitness results. I don’t think there’s any reason to think Bevo wasn’t telling the truth at that point.

I think next season will be big for him and he’ll really cement a spot in the midfield.

Sanders to Saints for Zak Jones and a future first. Then trade Zak Jones and three firsts for Zak Butters. Port can spin it to their fans that they turned one Zak into another Zak and got three first rounders.

Any ITK posters on here that think there’s anything in the Sanders/Butts rumours?
Its just the usual trade period fever dream combining your clubs interest in Sanders and this boards fascination with Butts.

He said sometime like 'most ready' not most talented.
I don't think comments during pre-season 2 years ago are too relevant today.

Surely there’s no way Adelaide would trade Keane
I think it's unlikely too.
Are we only going to target 'hard to get' KPDs this year?
