If Butters chooses us, we'll have our 2026, 2027 & 2028 first rounders available for trade. I understand that Tasmania will weaken the draft pool but Port should have to choose between a package around those 3 selections or letting him walk for a top 5ish selection by itself.

Butters is a RFA and out of contract. Other clubs bend us over when our stars are out of contract because 'that's all we have to offer' and we should be doing the same.

If Butters wants to come to us then Port have 3 options:
1. Take the FA compo.
2. Let him go to the draft
3. Trade him to us.

The value of the 3rd option is largely a function of available assets. If we have more we will be expected to Trade more. We just need to make sure we have enough to trade them so that the value is clearly more than they'd gain by letting him go to the draft. Its basically the same scenario we had with Smith and Dunkley, but without the FA compo option.

We genuinely could have traded our future 1st for a future 2nd and a first this year.

I remember when Brisbane traded out their first rounder before dealing with us for Dunkley and the narrative was that it was a Bulldogs problem not a Lions problem. Yet if the shoe is on the other foot...

They could and probably win their first 4 or 5. They double up against mostly bottom sides.

They have a dream draw that is rated A+ by the media. If they don't make top 10 that would be surprising

He can reject Port's contract and nominate for the draft. Doubt he would do that though.

Every single draft there are kids at pick 50 to 70 that go onto be gems - I would prefer to take a risk here and there.

The strike rate of this is SERIOUSLY underwhelming. I'm not necessarily advocating that Coffield should have been kept, but over the last 7 years the standout draftees from pick 50 > include Jase Burgoyne, Calsher Dear, Toby Bedford, Noah Answerth, Lachie Schultz and Hugo Garcia.

Lawson Humphries was in there too, but I don't really rate him as anything but a lone (and I mean LONE) man in defence and distributor.

I get it’s a low success rate, but I just personally think holding onto guys we know will be delisted - so that’s a zero percent success rate.

I get that too, but having a <5% chance of drafting someone serviceable (note not a superstar, just serviceable) vs having a bloke that can actually readily come in and play a role if we desperately need them to, plus being able to assist with in-game development and coaching of VFL and young players (ie Jacques), I'm not sure the reward is there.

I'd say that's why we wanted a mid second for Buku vs not accepting the F3 from Carlton, because once you get even into the 40's the talent pool drops significantly, and it's just not worth the pick when you have a known commodity in your hand, even if it is only for a year or two.

The headline is pretty misleading, he was fairly tight lipped when asked about Butters and spoke to strengthening our hand more generally.

That being said, Bont was very open about it when interviewed earlier this year.

I suspect they have a pretty open dialogue with Zak and his management and are quietly confident.

I don’t want to get my hopes up but that’s what I took from it that Maybe Zak has told the club that he wants to join. Remember listening to a story that that Franklin told Josh Kennedy that he was joining them 12 months before hand
