Isabel Bacon is one of this year’s AFLW Draft bolters coming off a memorable debut season with Sandringham Dragons at Talent League level. Boasting explosive speed and high-level endurance as well, Bacon has the flexibility to fill out a number of roles. While some of the fundamentals of the game are areas of improvement, her overall profile is one that will excite clubs.

PROFILE:
Bacon comes from an athletic background, where she played a variety of sports including basketball and netball alongside her athletics and cross country. In her top-age year, she set her sights on reaching the elite level of Australian rules football, and by the end of the Talent League Girls program, hit her straps with her best form of the season.

The Dragons utility played both half-back and through the middle, as well as off a wing. Though not the highest accumulator of the ball, Bacon's explosive speed coupled with her physicality and aggression at the contest make her such a concern for the opposition. When she tackles, she tackles with intent, and laid a whopping 7.5 per game across her 11 matches for the Dragons.

A real ground level player who had more aerial presence when stepping into the 'Big V', her work at half-back for Vic Metro really caught the eye. She ran off and provided some drive from defence, and set up scoring chains in the process. With a high-level endurance base to go with her speed and all-round athleticism, Bacon can continually impact games with her repeat contest work.

Bacon models her game on explosive midfielders such as Monique Conti and Jasmine Fleming, while the Sydney Swans supporter also looks up to ex-Dragon Sophia Hurley. Athletically, Bacon is able to compete and excel against the best of players, posting a blistering 3.16 seconds in the 20m sprint, and 7:55 in the 2km time trial, showing off that speed-endurance mix.

In terms of her improvements, Bacon has identified her kicking and decision making as ways to further improve. That was evident throughout the season as she would have that almost complete offensive and defensive game aside from the final execution. Those areas of improvement will not worry clubs too much knowing she has come from a different sporting background, and her strengths are harder to teach.

Going forward, Bacon has clear deficiencies to work on in her game, and given her progression in 2023, along with her evident upside, the Dragons midfielder/defender could add extra strings to her bow at the elite level. That speed-endurance mix is a point of difference, and with her natural aggression and ability to play both offensive and defensive roles, she is an all-round threat that just needs to tidy up the final execution.

SUMMARY:
Isabel Bacon has one of the better athletic profiles going around with her mix of speed and endurance, and clubs will likely consider her among the top 30 or so candidates. She got better as the season went on, and developed from an athletic, raw player, to one who was consistently impacting contests with her explosive speed and defensive pressure. It would not be a shock to see a club take a chance on her closer to the top 20.

At this level in the Draft, there are no really bad players - but yeah, we are bleeding disposal out of the midfield if Mon is contained, if she had someone like Cavanagh, the run out of there would have been amazing. Bacon is the girl now!

Aren’t the two we traded in inside types dalloway def looks like one , we need pace , she’s a good mark too , looks likely for mine

Richmond has selected inside midfielder/rebounding defender Isabel Bacon with selection No. 13 overall at tonight's AFLW Draft

Bacon is an inside midfielder who also excelled playing as a rebounding defender for Sandringham Dragons and Victoria Metro this season.

The 18-year-old grew up around sports, playing basketball and netball and competing in cross-country running throughout her formative years, including living with her family in Vancouver.

Bacon began focussing purely on football just last year but was quick to stand out to Richmond recruiters with her elite athleticism, explosive speed, endurance, sidestep, power, and strength.

An elite competitor with aggression and physicality in her game, Bacon was also one of the standouts at the National Combine, recording a 3.16 second 20m sprint and 7.55 minute two-kilometre time trial.

The 172cm utility ended the season in dominant form, adding an offensive edge to her impressive defensive numbers.

Bacon averaged 7.8 tackles and 14 disposals per game at Coates League level in 2023, including 41 touches and 23 tackles across the final two matches.

The Sandringham Dragons product was also awarded the Coaches Award for Victoria Metro at the Under 18 National Championships.

Richmond AFLW National Recruiting Manager Trent Mosbey said that Bacon had great versatility to play multiple roles across the ground.

“We love Isabel’s combination of attacking and defensive game style,” he said.

“Isabel can play on multiple-sized opponents and in multiple roles across the ground. Her ability to drive her legs and to power out of congestion was a real eye-catching feature of her game.

“She displays a fierce attack and high level of intensity at the ball and opposition, is an elite tackler and pressure player, and is highly regarded for regularly winning the ball back for her side and then attacking the game once in possession.”

Mosbey added that he could see Bacon helping the Tigers across half-back and progressing into the midfield in the future.

“Isabel has displayed Richmond character traits and is highly regarded for her leadership, professionalism, coachability, and a strong desire to achieve,” he added.

“She has demonstrated that she is a consistent performer week to week and performed well under pressure against the best players from around the country when playing for Victoria Metro.

“We are delighted to have her at the Tigers.”

just gone through schooling, wouldn't need any more of that crap


footage of her looks decent enough, main complaint would be handballing but a good handballer is rarer than rare

Dalloway definitely is, about the same age as Mon, hardly every kicks it so far though. Not sure she is much different to Grace Egan output wise. These girls being drafted now are 5 years behind and do you think we have a lot of class coming through? No question we need a Bacon type, but arguably need a more inside midfield type that kicks was my read. Time will tell.

Big drifter. Wasn't fussed on her kicking action tbh, but a quality mid type and a good get.
