Trade hypotheticals

You don't seem to realise Carlton supporters don't want to give up pick 6. Pick 14 is (slightly) unders for Mitchell yes but can you afford to keep him in ur salary cap if he is just playing reserves?
There is no way we would trade him for pick 14, and with LRT, ROK and potentially Goodes retiring there will be plenty of cap space.

Yes, we're going to pay Patrick's salary after he leaves...

He can play for you next year if you want. Will just cost Motlop and Horlin Smith.

Give you Hypen and our Rd 1.

Better?

Go Catters

Mitchell is better than anyone that we would draft at pick 14 and if we wanted to trade him for a pick, we would probably trade him to carlton for #6 so we could draft Durdin.
Why would Mitchell stay if he isn't guaranteed to get a game?

If Mitchell leaves, then you're trading him for a first round pick and cap space. You'll have less bargaining power once Mitchell comes out of contract. With youth such as Mills,, Dunkley, Heeney, Jones and Hewitt on your books from next year, you'll have a younger midfield than Hawthorn who core is as old as Geelong's. Kennedy, Hannebery, Jack, Jetta, Rohan, McGlynn, Bird, Lloyd, Cunningham, Heeney, Parker, Jones, Hewitt, Mills, Dunkley and Heeney. Deep midfield.

I view trading Mitchell as a good list management decision for Sydney. Want the pick because Durdin, Lever, Ahern or Laverde might be just as good.

He is the better player, just like Ablett, Selwood, Dangerfield, Fyfe, Kennedy, Buddy etc etc etc are all better than Priddis.

If you're going to use the brownlow for measuring how good a player is then you're a moron.

Resorting to name calling now are we... I just used the Brownlow to support what i already knew but you didn't clearly it worked, 13 zip was pretty comprehensive... i use my eyes to watch how good a player is and unlike you it does not matter what colour jumper they are wearing. Therefore I know Prestia is the gun and your a nut

Open to the idea of trading him, there are a lot of positives as you say, just not for pick 14.

Just a small point on this post...it's not the supporters that will make the final decision. If Carlton management want Mitchell, and swans management decide to play hardball, then he will either go for whatever is worked out between the two recruitment teams.

Sydney have to slash about a million dollars over the next couple of years after COLA has been abolished. Also will have to give significant pay rises to young players like Parker Cunningham Lloyd Hannaberry Kennedy plus Heeney Dunkley etc if they are as good as suggested wont be on minimum wages for very long. These reasons will not allow them to pay fringe or role players like Mitchell and Reid $500k per year for little return. It makes sense to trade Mitchell as the retiring ROK and LRT wont fix all problems.

Surely you'll have to re-sign jack, kennedy, hannebury, parker etc soon.
You'll need a fair wad of cash for that given their form is fantastic.

Signings to my knowledge:
Jack unsure (unlikely to go)
Kennedy 2016/17
Hanners 2016
Parker 2016

We are good at signing those we want

I tend to agree, but say this on the swans board and you will be burnt for witchcraft ... hence why I post here.

What I would say though, is that everyone seems to presume exactly what we pay all our players. We overpay everyone whereas all the other good clubs underpay or have players taking pay cuts or back end and front end contracts.

or just maybe... the swans knew those blokes were leaving which is how they could afford $2m for 2 players...

This would have to be essentially true. Anyone (ie Swans fans) who think we are about to open up salary cap space with this year's retirements is almost certainly mistaken. The Swans have noted that they are paying Buddy less this year than he would likely have earned had he stayed at the Hawks. So they must be factoring in large chunks of his $10m contract over the ensuing years. We also need to remember that the veterans allowance would account for part of Goodes and O'Keefe's current salaries.

I back the club to know what it's doing, but I find it hard to imagine there will be much room to move in the next few seasons unless they trade out (or lose to FA) one of their top few players. I wouldn't be surprised if they are factoring in losing at least one they would rather keep at some point in the next few years. Assuming they retain something close to recent form, the likes of Hannebery and Parker are going to attract large offers when they next come out of contract. And while he's not quite in our top rung of player, I can see Jetta being lured back to WA at some point in his career.

On the other hand, it is not correct to say the Swans need to trim a million from their cap as COLA is phased out. Around half the list - maybe more - will qualify for the repackaged COLA (ie the rental allowance). I very much doubt the COLA restructure is going to have much of an effect at all. The Swans have always said it is spread across all players. The AFL have confirmed this. Build in the fact that the salary cap increases each year anyway, and the result will be that the Swans' cap rises at a slightly lower rate than other clubs over the next few years. Of course, that does make the club vulnerable to other clubs luring the odd player away. The only disaster will be if Buddy's body gives up on him too soon into the long term deal he's on. But what happens will happen. No point getting too worked up about it before it does.

If danger did his knee over summer, Id do that. The bloke is a superstar, battered body or not.

Of course no supporter in here would doubt that Sydney couldnt afford to have Danger on their list and still be under the salary cap.

What will you offer him a 12 year $12M deal???
