He has had a few injuries which have held him back which has not helped his ability to gain muscle and then with Neeld coming in and getting Clark and Dawes there isnt really much room for him especially since they have gotten Hogan now as well. He is still only 20 and plenty of time left to develop, i don't see why it would be a bad thing to pick him up as a free agent.
Young KPF huh? Sounds like he'd make an excellent Defender ;)

Gohawks, aussie80s, other bh watchers what are your thoughts on Taylor duryea and Langford? With Murphy going we are actually short players who can play the small defender role (I don't rate Cheney). Will duryea make it and will it be as a defender or a forward? Langford appears to have the athletic tools to develop into a running player but appears a way off - is he any chance for 2013.

Hey Burner,

Duryea - keeper and is contracted for 2013. Small laser like left footer, was BHH best player in finals and started to believe in 2012. In 2014 if all goes to plan I see him as a replacement in the backline for Goo, at the moment he has the footskills, needs to try to build his endurance/ fitness a little and body on body work and he will make it, not rocket science to say 2013 is an important year for the kid.

Langers- Rookie list player, with rookie list spots decreasing and up against other Rookies such as Bosely, Wanaga and Frank not to mention Schnieder, some decisions will need to be made. Langers in 2 years showed courage at the contest, however seems to regularly come up 2nd best. His body just has not held up, he is ard 186cm, very light framed and can be seen as a utility in that he plays everywhere, however, in building terms he seems to be a jack of all trades and master of none. Just needs to get his body right and play for a whole year with a pre-season behind him. I think he is safe given we have pick 189 and pick 4003, so give him a one year contract and see how he goes. He missed year 12 footy due to illness as well. If we lose him, i'm sure he will be a p'ship hero with Sydney!

Halahan is the one I like for 2013.

...Langers- Rookie list player, ....

Is Langers a NSW scholarship player so he is outside the rookie list?

Allegedly, Langers has elite running capacity. I have never really noticed it at BHH. Given the way the game is evolving being a runner who happens to play footy may be the go.

Duryea is better than I thought. He has improved each year so we have to stick with him.

I cannot see Frank ever playing AFL. Too short, too slow and almost no defensive side. Given he is a late starter I doubt he will ever develop the tank to play out a full AFL game.

Wang is another runt, as is Schneider and Luke Andrews. If I had to pick which runt, I would pick Andrews. I dont believe Wang or Schneids developed enough this year.

Broc Mac was crucified by Clarko and courageously played out the season. Patto is a fantastic honest battler. I do not believe we will carry this type of rookie next season.

Boseley is tall, quick, red headed. Whats not to like?

Cheney is deceptive at 186cm (he is the same height as Brereton was) so is actually more of a mid size defender who can play small....when given the chance. When they lost Brown to GC they brought in Cheney and Puopolo as insurance. I would think that Hawthorn are comfortable with Guerra, Puopolo and Cheney filling the small defender role.

Cheney has been the most impressive player I saw at Box Hill this year, ahead of Schneider. He works hard, gets a lot of the ball, uses it well and sets up play.

Hawthorn have more than enough defenders to cover both Murphy and Gilham going - particularly as Lake has come in, and it seems from the lack of interest they had in re-signing either of those that they have already worked out where they are going with their defence and that would most likely be with players already on the list.

I'm probably the wrong person to ask in regards to Duryea as I actually thought he should have been delisted last year. He is only a bit over a year younger than Cheney but a lot further back in his development. He hasn't had a very conspicuous season at BH, despite finishing 7th in their B&F. I don't think he is defensive enough in his game style to play the role of a small lock down defender. He is a reasonable mark for his size and he will chase a ball but I don't see him as a backline player but that is probably where he is best suited. He is not overly quick for an outside role in the midfield, not a good enough extractor for an inside midfielder and doesn't have any x-factor to put him ahead of even rookies like Frank or Wanganeen as a forward. I can't see any position in Hawthorn's best 22 where he could assist.

If Duryea survives the cut, after a Gilham decision is reached, it will be more by an act of default. With 6 players going if Gilham leaves, it would leave only a very late draft pick compensation. As I believe Grimley may be the 7th player to go it is likely Duryea will go around again in 2013. If he does then he needs to make every post a winner next year but I still wouldn't know what position that would be in. 179cm players need to be ball winning terriers or have an x-factor to their play, I don't think Duryea has either.

Langford has spent 2 years on the rookie list as a NSW scholarship player but that expires this year and he either needs to be upgraded to the main list or delisted (as I understand it). He has had a bad run with illness and injury and I have seen very little of him to date. What I did see wasn't particularly eye catching so I am not sure Hawthorn will persist with him. With the rookie list going from 6 to 4 places I don't think he will get a second chance to be re-drafted as a rookie either. He may remain at BH next year if he is delisted and try to prove himself.

As of right now, Duryea is a keeper. Was a big improver at Box Hill this year. His ability to kick accurately will be highly prized by Hawthorn and I thought he took big strides in becoming a small defender this season. He also had runs through the midfield from time to time at Box Hill, so he's being asked to develop some strings to his bow. Might take some time but with Guerra on the wrong side of 30 and no other stand-out currently listed player to take his place, Duryea has the inside running on being Guerra's replacement in 2014.

Good observations, agree with most of them.

I would put McCauley on the senior list ahead of Grimley, Andrews deserves a rookie spot.

I would upgrade Schneider, who is a very good ball winner but needs to improve disposal efficiency.

Guess I just haven't seen the side of Duryea that others have, although his disposal is better than Schneider, Andrews etc.

If Frank has a lack of speed surely it's related to his endurance rather than ability. His 20m sprint time of 2.82 is exceptional.

Good point Turley
As for the previous poster calling Schneider a " runt"
, seriously?!? The kid is built very strongly, is tough and smashes in
Some harp on about him being slow, shit I remember everyone said the same about Sam Mitchell too
Tom finds the footy and uses his brains, Hawks should give him a go and see if he can crack it for the big time
As for Wanganeen, I can't see the fascination myself, in the games I saw this year he spent more time pooping his pants than finding the footy

Agree, he has been flawless at times for Box Hill. Plus it would be especially sweet if we could get a regular AFL player out of a Pick 80.

Yep. Couldn't have said it better myself...

This is what I expect from now on:
We will lose Gilham for nothing. He will go to GWS in the PSD. I hope we can trade him for a pick but I am feeling rather pessimistic after the Young compo fiasco.

We will sign 1 or 2 of the new delisted FA's - maybe Gillies, maybe Rodan, who knows? The club will know what they want and will add a mature body or two to the list for next year.

We will go to the draft with 3 or 4 picks and get the best young kids available. One pick may be used on a mature body like Towers but we wll want a couple of youngsters.

Feel free to pass the time trying to predict the future. What do you all expect the club to do now?

Thank you A80s. It must be refreshing to read my stuff after wading through all that twaddle from Go Hawks, Hank Jnr. et al
Your asking for trouble FT, Henry can be quite intimidating with his abuse, personally I don't fear short people and I'm used to his stalking and bullying.

Back to the point, this week will be quiet, intriguing to see where Toy goes.

Tom Schneider sounds like a young Sewell - a bullock who get the ball, not super-quick or silky-smooth but very very valuable.

Hallahan is more like Sewell in approach, watch the BHH finals.

Nothing wrong with being a runt if you can compensate for it in other areas. I would hate for people to think I am a runt hater.

Frank is an interesting one. I guess it comes down to what your expectations are of him based upon where he has played his footy to date.

He was certainly an absolute mile off fitness-wise. The wraps on his kicking ability on both feet when rookied were ridiculous and I don't think he consistently demonstrated elite kicking skills. Certainly his finishing in front of goal was inconsistent despite kicking some very handy goals.

I don't think we could have asked much more from him as a rookie this year but the bar was set lower than others.

He showed small glimpses of being above VFL level in the games I saw. It was the ability to carry the ball that stood out the best. But a long way off in other parts of his game but I think if fit enough he would improve in these areas in time.

Hope he gets another year. Keep thinking he could end up as a Puopolo replacement, but with more composure and being more dangerous around the goals.
