Personally - and it's been a great story to date - I feel that the Amos Frank experiment needs to end now. Been a feel-good story and he is certainly talented, but he won't be playing AFL any time soon.

I may be way off the mark here as to what his language skills are like or the need for them to play at the highest level, but taking the emotion/feel good nature out of the discussion for a second, surely at some point, through no fault of his own, a limited grasp on the English language is going to make it nigh on impossible to fully comprehend structure/game plan instructions isn't it?

And please, this is in no way meant to provoke a race discussion in any way, shape or form. It is mearly meant as an honest question.

Mick Malthouse recently gave a lecture at my university where he talked about Brad Dick, who couldn't read or write and therefore couldn't understand anything on the whiteboard when he first came to Collingwood. He did a quick course and got some competency. Anyway, its not unprecedented. I don't think it is an insurmountable problem though. Think of all the soccer players around the world playing in teams where different players speak different languages.

Totally off topic, but I find it totally out of line that he would actually name the player.

Tbh it's getting quite depressing reading this thread as it seems there is not much waiting in the wings and our picks in the draft aren't going to help unless we fluke a gem in the rough.

I think you're being a bit harsh here, Dixie. He had a pretty good year considering where he was at 12 months ago. He performed better in his first season as a rookie listed player than others have IMO.

Is it because of the reduced rookie list for next year?

I'm interested to see how much he can improve with another year in the system. There's one or two I'd be letting go of before Frank based on this season.

I don't believe there is any reason for pessimism about our trading/ draft period. To date we have got one of the best fullbacks in the AFL, we stole the most promising International rookie away from Carlton and we replaced Leon Cameron with Brett Ratten. On the debit side we lost Murphy and Young to FA and unfortunately were unjustly compensated for that. We lost Bateman and Bruce to retirement and Boumann was delisted. It appears likely that Gilham may also be traded.

The obvious conclusions to draw to date are that Lake is an automatic inclusion, Kilkenny is a gifted athlete with enormous potential in our game. Conversely all the departures except Young we're marginal players not in our best 22. Not underestimating Young but he had little upside and is replaceable by Savage or Hill.

Forecasting the future is foolish but we should get a good player with pick 28 and may be able to improve our picks marginally with Gilham's mooted departure. The later draft picks may appear problematical but will give us the option of rookie upgrades or delisted free agents. it will certainly be challenging for the club but with with a bit of risk taking and lateral thinking we may emerge stronger than everyone seems to be predicting.

To date I still view the glass as 3/4 full not 1/2 empty. Am I the only one to see the positives ?

Good post Dermott. The Young compensation (love him or leave him) smarts. I cant help feeling it has restricted any other moves the club may have been contemplating during this trade period. The forward planning by the club during the GWS/GCS 'hand out' period appears on face value to be well thought out. (i.e NZ and Kilkenny).

Like any rookie, depends mostly on how he's learning/developing.
Just with most other guys they need to work on their kicking, their body strength or fitness or whatever else; he's having to learn & develop language skills and what the game plans are about and 'the other bits' of being a professional footballer, that kids from other areas & backgrounds have been learning since much younger.

If all that's all coming along well, then he'd be unlucky to get cut I think. I'm sure the club will have certain markers they're measuring his progress by.

...but that's the other thing, there will be some pretty unlucky rookies to get cut this year.

Did not seem to hold Cloke back.

Coming from the remote bush as a mature age player is a huge ask. With the decreased rookie list these types of experiments will be threatened. It is a shame as footy is a great bridge. It would be nice if the AFL set up a remote rookie scheme. The Private School scholarship system seems to be the only real pathway and that is set up for younger kids.

Why did Brandon Lee get delisted? He was quite good in his only 2 games that he played. Or did the reduced rookie system have something to do with him being delisted? Was surprised to see him cut be to be honest.

If benclank01 has the literacy skills to post on an Internet forum then I believe HFC can teach basic English to Amos to understand basic game plans. I mean this trade period is harder than our "chip chip" gameplan

Hey Guys

I am not sure if this has been covered but I was under the impression that Jarrad Boumann had been delisted along with Cameron Bruce and Chance Bateman. Murphy and Young have also been moved on via free agency, but on the official Trade and Delistings page on the AFL website (http://www.afl.com.au/retirements delistings/tabid/13717/default.aspx) his name is not listed and in fact it appears as it has been removed from the list.

Furthermore all of those players listed earlier have had their images removed from the Hawthorn Website (http://www.hawthornfc.com.au/players/tabid/8324/category/senior/season/2012/default.aspx) except for Boumann, he remains.

I know their was a mention on the Free Agency announcement of Murphy to the Gold Coast Suns article (http://www.hawthornfc.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/4742/newsid/149614/default.aspx) but apart from this there has been no announcement from the club - can somebody clear this up for me 100% - I had heard he had some trouble during the year, but was his delisting in the article factual or a case of premature list ejection on the behalf of an over zealous media official at the club.

In the words of Pauline Hanson - please explain.
