Thanks for clearing up that technicality. I did see the report (on AFL.com) that said
"GOLD COAST Suns football manager Marcus Ashcroft has told Gillette AFL Trade Radio on Friday that 20-year-old Josh Toy's heart condition had no affect on his capacity to perform at AFL level.

Ashcroft indicated that Toy's progress has been hampered only by the fact he had not yet had a full pre-season since joining the Suns."

Other reports I had read stated things such as:
"JOSH Toy's AFL future hangs in the balance as clubs weigh up whether a serious heart condition overrides his sporting potential.

The Gold Coast defender was born with a congenital heart block, a rare condition that severely limits his aerobic capacity, but which poses little danger to his health.
It emerged on Wednesday night the condition was keeping Toy's maximum heart rate well below 100, explaining why he has failed to run out matches and secure a place in the lowly Suns side.
The youngster cannot reach what most players regard as top gear, but the condition was masked in his junior days due to his power and football talents.

The Suns noticed the medical issue in Toy's debut season last year, but his manager James Pitcher is confident the condition will not destroy his career.
"He's not going to drop dead or anything like that," Pitcher said. "We're still awaiting further results."
He added various injuries restricted pre-season campaigns for Toy, who had never had an ECG test as a junior.
A pacemaker would boost Toy's endurance, but end his football career.
"I don't think he's lived up to anywhere near his capabilities at this stage," Pitcher said.
Toy has played 13 AFL games five this year. (Herald-Sun Oct 11 2012)

"The condition means he has both a low resting heart rate and a low maximum heart rate, which has a negative effect on his endurance and his ability to increase it. The only way to fix the problem is with a pacemaker, which would mean he could no longer play contact sport." (Fairfax papers Oct 11 2012)

He is certainly talented and the condition is not life threatening so he can perform at AFL level, the query I raised was that he was a big gamble if he can't maintain intensity and only fires early in games. The Suns put that down to a lack of a pre-season while journalists put the condition down to why he had consistent fade outs.

At any rate I trust that Hawthorn did their due diligence on him....but chose not to take him. Either that or they wouldn't part with pick 29 and GC had no use for pick 68. GC did indicate that they would try to help him get back to Victoria and compensation didn't appear an issue so it just appears that the Hawks were not interested.

He can, and probably will nominate for the pre-season draft. If we are keen on him later we would have to pass on our last selection (probably pick 72) and then take him there if he is still available with that selection. At this stage it doesn't look like we are keen. To me pick 72 is a gamble no matter who you take so I wouldn't mind that being used on him.

KPP's usually hit their prime at 25-28. He still has a lot of development to do just like Schoenmakers. His foot skills are very good on both feet and i think he would fit in well as a third tall type rather than a KPD. If we can make room for him I don't see why he couldn't come onto our list.

Makes you wonder why Geelong don't see that development.

I think it is more that he is out of contract and not willing to sign a new one so Geelong may as well just delist him. He is just disappointed he wasn't given more opportunities. Geelong did want to keep him but he didn't want to stay.

I would also like to see McCauley elevated although they can retain him as a nominated rookie for another year which they may do now. With only 4 rookies for next year I think they will also retain Frank and possibly Boseley, but that would leave just one selection in the rookie draft. The result of that would also mean Pattison, Wanganeen and Langford would all be cut.
.

Broc McCauley is incredibly hard working from what little i have seen this year. I think he'll definitely make it and has shown he's at least serviceable already.
Broc would look a lot better then Bailey as a back up, if one was to go down in the Hale/Roughy combination, as he can cover the ground better, take good contested marks both in defence and up forward, and his a good kick at goal!!!!
Max Baily is a good man, but have to say that McCauley is ahead of him at this point. IMO.

I really don't think Hawthorn are interested or they would have traded for him.

Geelong's draft picks are 16, 59 and 79. They could have traded him to Hawthorn for pick 72 (which is likely to be Hawthorn's last pick) and grabbed a slightly earlier pick if they were going to delist him anyhow.

With the Hawks having taken Spangher they don't need any more mid sized defenders. If Hawthorn hasn't chosen to take him during the trade window then I am not sure what is going to change by draft day.

Hawthorn's needs are probably 2 onballers and a KP player but with the late picks in the draft may well take the best available at their selections at 29, 68 and 72.

I doubt Toy or Gillies will be taken by Hawthorn at this stage as we could have traded for either and passed on the option. They may wait until draft day and see who they get with picks 29 and 68 and, if their main targets are gone, then consider recycling.

As they will both be delisted we will soon see if there is interest as "Under the new free agency rules, all delisted players become free agents." Therefore any delisted player can sign with any club they want.

Not out of the question but it would seem very unlikely. Toy would be a greater chance as a KP player than the smaller Gillies.

Im not sure if i was alone here, but i thought McCauley was really impressive in those first few games he played for us. I was very surprised to see him dropped (especially with Bailey being injured) and thought he was unlucky not to get back into the team.

Surely Toy won't be de-listed. He had reasonable trade value.

I don't think Clarko thinks much of Brock as he has not mentioned him once this year and when we had either Hale or Ruff missing he just mentioned Baily???
I know Broc did his elbow but before abs after he cane back there has been no mention if him at all???

I think we shall get Toy as a FA too. Very shrewd Hawks, keep it up!

I suspect that if Toy was to become a free agent (which I'm not sure he will) he will nominate the club he supported as a kid, Essendon. They were chasing him in the trade period and i read he was a pretty serious bombers fan.

The reason I think getting Gillies would be a good maneuver is because we need someone to replace Brian Lake in a few years. Gillies could be it.

Does anyone remember what the cats were asking for Gillies last trade period and what we offered? Shows how quickly circumstances can change.

Got this on the Cats board ....

Correct, Rivers in would most probably mean the end for Gillies. We should've taken your pick 32 last year. Anyway, that's business.

Who do you want us to cut? Or who do you think are likely prospects for this?

A random Q, what is the deadline for delisting?

I really am not convinced at all with Grimley and whilst he is contracted I would delist and rookie at best.

I am also not sure on Litherland but that may be a bit unfair as he was injured in 2011. Anyone got an more educated view on him from 2012?

The cats were saying the same thing about him being a replacement for Scarlett......

Look what happened their.

I am not saying that I am an more educated. Of those that are yet untried. I like the physical attributes of Grim and Boseley but both are painfully thin. I like Hallahan's frame but he needs to lift his game. I think Duryea may make it. He is a smart player but needs 5kg of muscle. Woodward wont be chopped. That leaves Lowden, Litherland and Kelly. Given if we cut one we will use a pick in the 80s I reckon they are safe.

We dont have to make a call on Schneids, Wang or Broc so why would we?

If we do not upgrade Schneider and or Wanganeen, after being on the rookie list for two years, should we expect to keep them? Not as if they are paid huge salaries as a rookie. Would we be prepared to let them walk?

Just askin' cos I'm not in a position to judge.

I think it was Mark Evans I heard talking at the completion of the trade period and he mentioned both Litherland and Dureya as players of the future so I would be very surprised if either were cut. I been of the opinion that Grimely would get another year but I think he would be the first to go off the senior list if someone gets the chop.

Grimley is contracted for next year. Hawks would need to pay him out if they delisted him. Wouldn't be a big payout but that contract might save him, along with some ruck rule changes.

Litherland has something that as a defender is required in todays game and that is his pace. He really struggled to finish the year this year. I think having seen him in the pre season and his early games there is something to work with however he needs to show improvement. You get chances but your time in this game gets cut short if you stagnate. I want to see him be a lot more consistent through the year next year.

Seeing we don't have the coin or the spots on the list it will never happen, but Matthew Bate should be a good pick up for someone. Seems talented just playing in a shite team seemed to just keep him down.
