Football is almost back and we'll be better this time

Many many thanks to bluesgirl at csc for this (I'm sure she'll read this to know how grateful i am).

Last time I do a training report for a while

Its back to school but luckily its for the final year

I got there and only the players were already out there with no coaches. They were doing long kicks, shots on goal and practicing marking. Then when everyone was on the field they did their sprints. Up and down in a straight line in groups of 6 trying to beat their previous time.

Pagan stoof in the centre of the ground as he saw Libba, TD, Braddles, Ratts and Crosisca take charge

couldnt resist saying it.

Fev (back) - Joined in the sprints and the skills with long kicks and then finished up the session with handball drills.
McLaren (back) - Did the sprints and long kicking then did more running.
Raso (wrist) - Did the sprints and a few handball drills.
Whitnall (leg) - Same as McLaren.
Eddie (ankle) - Did the sprints and joined in for most of the skills, but didnt fully train.
Benjamin (hamstring) - Did the sprints and handball drills.
Flint (quad) - Same and Benji.
Young - Did the sprints and kicking and handball drills.
Kennedy - Did not train at all.

The group was split into 2 and the idea of the skill was to get the ball onto your scoring side. Lots of tackling which was good. Hampson rucked against Ackland. Walker looked good running through the trafic.

Dempsey took aside Cloke and Jacobs and did a few ruck dills with them. He mainly spoke to Jacobs and was taching him how to ruck. Towards the end of the session he had Waite doing some ruck work with him. And then Waite did some work with TD and played in the backline in the match.

Next was kicking drills which needs to be improved big time. Even god himself (murphy) made errors. All it was, was leading and taking a mark and kicking the ball back. The kicks were either too high, too low or just marks that should of been taken were getting droped. Griggy was doing well so was Stevens he was hitting targets.

Then there was a match for about 20 minutes. Waite played in the backline and he played on Hampson then Jacobs. Setanta was on Dylan, Houlihan on Teague, Tomi started on Anderson but then he moved onto Scotland and Walker was on Austin. Heath did all the kick-ins and Crosisca was teaching them the huddle and when Stevo got the ball he was say "keep running puss" till he got about half way up the ground. Walker laid a good tackle on young Austin. Im so happy the boys are finaly learning how to tackle.

Final drill was just handballing. And they ended it off with more running for about another 20 minutes.

Over the pre-season the players who have stood out the most have been:
Walker - His just pure class, he didnt stop running when he had OP and now his just full of muscle, his as fit as anything and i just love the way he puts the footy under his arm and then runs like the wind. This is his year, Top 5 b&f.
Anderson - Smokey of the year.
Jackson - has been training very well.
Murphy - his just god.
Tomi J - for not even being on the list he has done very well. I havnt seen him miss many targets.
.... and Houlihan and Stevens have been hitting targets so thats a sign.

Until next holidays,

Mich.

....

Waite kind of driffted off his oponent. He didnt stay with him the whole time and Hampson usually beat him in the one on ones. I think his best suited as a forward. He did work on every position today, Forward, ruck and back.

Many thanks to BigBadBill at csc as well...
also went to training saw a very vocal training session, that was played out at a good intensity. Things that i noted form the session:

Jarrod Waite's desision making was really poor at time during the mini game that they played and when he did one on one drills with who i think was Mark Austin at times he was being put out of position.
I seriously think that he is going to be given significant time in the back line this year and could be a pinch hitting foward. I dont want to pump up tires but as Angafangalis has said many times Jake Edwards looks good and has a great lead on him could become Waites replacement up foward.

When looking at the few that were in the injured group i noticed Whitnall not looking very good where he was seen often struggeling to keep up with training and have a hard time moving to the ball with pace.
I must admit that Fev looked much simulat to Lance in the way that he trained, made me think we will struggle to get a score on the board against Essendon if these blokes dont come up.

I also took notice of Aisake doing ruck work with Dempsey and i must say that Aisake despiretly needs to work on his body strenght because when he was doing drills he got pushed away like a rag doll. Setanta through out the mini game played as a full back on McLaren this could be a possible permanent move in the future were we can get Setanta to release Thornton to become the second or third tall.

If i remember anything else i will post it later on.

Big Bad Bill

Cheers AWG, and of course everyone over at CSC for the great reports and pictures-not just today, but all throughout the preseason.

Good to hear that most of the boys are training hard and well-there seems to be a positive spirit amongst the players, even despite all the off-field drama, which is very pleasing to see.

The injury group isn't great to see, but I'm not too concerned. As long as there are no very serious injuries, which is a positive, so let's hope they stay out of trouble. Even more pleasing is that the name of Adam Hartlett, a kid who I have so much faith and belief in, a kid who is entering what is undoubtedly the most important footballing year in his short career to date, has managed to stay away from the injury group. Hoping like hell that he keeps it up, plays NAB Cup, and the majority of the year in the seniors.

Nah, i wouldn't be too worried HBF :)

If they're doing sprints and a few drills, they're ok.

Just being cautious i reckon.

I'd just prefer to see most of them up and running. Back injuries and Fev and Dylan are the 2 that would be causing the most concern.

Dylan McLaren is a D grade player

I don't think so BG.
I really think he has been treated unfairly by the majority of the posters on BF.

Alot of people seem to forget that when French came to the club, he wasn't the most popular choice.

I really think that Dylan could prove quite a few people wrong this year.

Just as long as we don't set too high expectations of him, that we start to become unrealistic.

It is obvious that he is an average player, a battler at best. But, that doesn't mean he cannot serve this club, and serve it well. Take French for example, as he is a recent example. Was he a very good player? No. Was he a good player? Not particularly. But what he was, was a great servant-an average player who was always willing to give his all for the team.

That's what I'm hoping will happen with McLaren. Give his all, all the time. We can't ask for much more.

Can't see Waite playing on the wing. How would you feel as a forward leading up the ground and see him spraying it everywhere. The wing should be reserved for players with pace and skill - something Simmo has in bucketloads

There are 2 spots on a wing! :p

If not a wing, a half forward flank should be for him.

Simmo will play on the left wing, and Walks will play on the right.
If Waite shows enough in the backline during the practice matches and the NAB Cup, then leave him there for the early rounds. If not, move him back up the ground onto a HFF.

I'd really like Hartlett to play in the NAB cup. He's had a terrible run with injuries, but I still remember his impressive effort V Cats in the NAB cup last year. Totally destroyed Ablett. He looked as though he'd been playing at AFL level for 30-40 games. His bad run with injuries in 2006 was a tragedy, hopefully that's in the past now. I'd also like Grigg to get a run in the NAB cup. He's a tall midfielder, with explosive pace, and excellents skills. Has similar physical attributes to a certain prominent Weagles midfielder. :)

Didn't he play on Kingsley?

Oh ODN, don't be so pedantic...

You read it with great interest, and you loved it!

Just admit it.

;)

Nope, he played on Nablett, and beat him soundly.

Was a great indicator of the talent he has, and the future he can carve out for himself, providing he stays well clear of all the injuries.

And personally, I can't wait! :thumbsu:

I've heard on more than one occasion that he has quite the thumping kick on him. With the departure of Bear and Harts almost certain to hold down a place in the senior side in '07, could he be our new 'WOOOF!'?

Jeremias, I have been approached from another site about their intellectual property being lifted fully, meaning that people don't have to go to that site to read what was intended for that site. I guess it is all a part of netiquette.
