Usually working Mondays and Thursdays, so took today's public holiday as a chance to see a training session.

Lots of people waiting in the shadows of the trees for the 9am start - including some young umpires - which turned into a 9.30 start.

Things i noticed:

Hentschel, Sellar, Jacky and Douglas stayed near the goals doing some handball / handskill drills. The first involved Sellar and Rowdy holding a football in one hand above their heads, and throwing it to be caught by the other guy with the same hand at the same height. Part of the trick was to have the footballs not collide in the air, throwing left hand to left hand, right hand to right.

Afterwards, Douglas and Jacky did a standard handball drill, two balls back and forth, when at the behest of a trainer they'd handball left or right to Rowdy or Sellar. They'd handball back along the ground to Douglas/Jacky, who would resume handballing back and forth. Whoever fumbled first between Jacky/Douglas "lost", much to the derision of their teammates, which was usually Jacky. He took it well and kept trying harder; when he did beat Douglas, i could hear his laughter from across the oval, and he had a big smile on his face. He had a big smile on his face when he lost too but you could see it just made him try harder.

The rest of the squad formed up for kick-to-kick. Then, they ran around some cones. I left at 10, so i'm sure they did some more interesting things. There were a bunch of people there, so anyone else want to elaborate?

Other things i noticed:

- all the players seemed to be having fun. Lots of smiles, laughing, very positive vibes between the players.
- Burton looks like he's ready to play already. His kicking was a little off, but it usually is, so...
- I think cmndstab's favourite player had the green training guernsey today, at least i think it was him, he might have had a trim.
- Dangerfield didn't look very happy. Maybe he was concentrating on his training, i don't know.
- no photos.

And a shout-out to Plugga, fellow poster who i met today, who's flown in from Shanghai for a couple weeks.

That's good news about Burton :) Do you rekon he'll be ready to play earlier than expected. I hope so.

Knights and Maric walked past us on Jetty Road at the Bay today :) :)

No idea about when he'll play, but i think he took part in all the drills i saw, and if i didn't already know, i wouldn't have picked he'd had a knee reconstruction. Anyone else who was there got any idea?

It might have been Cook, not Sloaney :p Because Cook just looks like Sloane with marginally shorter hair!

Did Dangerfield look specifically displeased, or just no real emotion? Because I've seen him run around and he always just looks like he has a blank face.

Nice work getting down there though! :) Appreciate the report. Hoping to get down myself on Thursday.

Edit: Good to hear Jacky has a sense of humour too! :D He seems like a real tryer, which is good to see.

Nice work! :thumbsu:
I've noticed Dangerfield doesn't usually look very happy  Either he's really focussed, or something's going on with him - but after reading an article, I think someone posted on here somewhere, he hasn't had the best start of 2009...

Maybe he's still smarting from Craigy's comments on 5AA. Either way he needs to suck it up and do the hard yards.

Look it could be that it's 40 degrees today, or the fact that i'm not getting enough iron in my diet, but i just have a feeling in my waters that Dangerfield could be another prospect we train up to be a gun, only for him to move home in a few years (aka Stenglein). Yeah I know, pessimistic me and i hope its just the weather, however..............

I think you are reading too much into it. Danger has never looked happy while running around, I don't think he's like some other players who are always laughing it up.

If he was pissed off because the coach digged into him on the radio show and that caused him to take off, then we probably don't need him anyway since he's going to have to handle criticism playing in a two-team town.

However, one of the reasons Dangerfield was selected was because he was such a great character. He's a natural-born leader. He'll take it all in his stride and end up the better because of it. Perhaps he's not looking upset - perhaps he's looking determined.

Anyway, I'm going down on Thursday so I'll make a strong attempt to watch him and see how he goes.

I hope so. As i can't get down there to see them train, i was just going by comments from others. From what I have seen this year he looks bigger and stronger than last year. Fingers crossed that his potential turns into actual.

You can definatly see more defenition and bigger shoulders/arms. He had big legs last year too, but had puppy fat on them.

I'll go with cmndstab here and reassure what good character we've been told he has by both the club, those who come accross him and ex -coaches and old friends.

Seems like the character who will attack things like Craigy said by training as hard as he can, rather than moping.

He seemed like he was having fun in the Crows photo shoot too, vids up on afc.com.au

I went down yesterday. first time been able to get to my computer.
I was really pleased to see a 2 half internal trial.
A couple of things I noticed while watching were.

-Brodie Martin really impressed, His run and carry is exceptional. Always willing to take an opponent on. On the wing in one passage of play he burned off Pets with ease.
-Andy Otten looks set for a big year. His clearance work was a feature and he was also thrown forward at one stage with great effect. His marking is very strong.
-Scott Thompson started forward and worked in conjuction with Walker beautifully.
-Goody played mainly on a wing and across half back.
-Zooma played back pocket for the less experienced side.
-Danger uses his pace to great effect, Especially when running down an opponent.
-Nick Gill looks to have done alot of work on his goal kicking. He was kicking very straight with a more controlled run up. He has also bulked up alot and with minimal injuries will be our key forward this year.
-Tony Armstrong didn't play in the game, but watching him closely at other times. His kicking is brilliant, Running at full pace down the wing and without breaking stride he continued to deliver lace out passes to Burton everytime. He was also drilling every set shot on goal from 40 - 50 out from multiple angles

Cheers Cheif, sounds like Amstrongs game time will hinge on his ability to put on weight and gain endurance, everything else could be there which is encouraging.

Just a couple of quick questions to those who were good enough to go.

How'd Smack look?
Dangers endurance and kicking at pace?
Dougies possy and endurance?
Who rucked and how'd they go?
Jacky?
Davis play? If so, how well?

Thanks in advance.

This is great news Chief.
Were they straight through the behinds or goals?;)

It'll give us 3 X factors with Bird and Porps if he can remain on the track and kick true.

How'd Smack look? Really good, Was playing full forward opposed to Truck. Easily had the pace to cover truck but was easily out bodied. Took a fantastic diving mark in the goal square.

Dangers endurance and kicking at pace? His goal kicking from set shots are good, still needs to work on his kicking at top speed. Endurance is good. Got absolutely cannoned into the back by Moran in a marking contest. Could see it really hurt. Stood back up and pushed off the trainer to make a hard lead down the wing to get the ball :thumbsu:
Dougies possy and endurance? Has bulked up heaps. Was doing lighter duties today.
Who rucked and how'd they go? Tip vs Moran. Tip won centre throw ups easy as he had too much strength. Moran provided run around the ground
Jacky? Didnt play, Lighter duties.
Davis play? If so, how well? Lighter duties. Done all the main group work but none of the physical stuff which involved tackling
Thanks in advance.

Just taking a guess here, but after the Symes incident and the rumours we've been hearing, maybe Neil Craig has told Danger to pull his head in, and needs to take things alot more professional. Could be an idea why Dangerfield has looked so serious lately.

I like a lot of things I'm hearing here. Thompson working in conjuction with Walker in the forward line is an exciting prospect, especially if some of our other mids can come up and allow him to be released there for passages in the main season! I love Otten and it's great to hear Danger is getting himself involved in the intra-club. It always frustrates me when you have speedy players that don't use it to their advantage enough (see: Jericho), but this is definitely not the case for Danger. Martin burning off Petrenko is an exciting sign, since he needs this part of his game if he's ever going to overcome his lack of body size. His excellent skills are the other required piece of the puzzle. He's going to need everything else to go right for him to become an AFL footballer but some things are starting to fall into place. Nick Gill is exciting too, amazing that he could be that dramatically different (in kicking execution and body size) after one preseason at his age (26), but I guess he's perennially injured in the preseason and hasn't had a chance in the past.

I think thats the key with Gilly, He has had nearly a full pre season to really bulk up and work on his flaws (kicking)

What time and where is training on thursday? I have never been to a training session before and am pretty interested this season. Got a week off work so i'm able to head down for once.
