Hey guys,
Training report Thursday 6th December 2007
Enjoy.
Complete contrast to Mondays training as we were bathed in complete sunshine and heat. The training sessions went for just over 2 hours and it involved almost every facet of the game. Injury group today was Fevola, Judd, Anderson (who is slowly getting back into the swing of things as he like Fevola were involved in the first few drills which was lane kicking), Hadley, Bentick & A. O'hAilpin. Interesting to note that they were not out for the entire sessions, they were only out there for 30min and then went inside (all the above that I mentioned).
Today was the 1st time that I have heard Ratts yelling at the blokes
. WHHHHOOOO. (Just thought id mention that, to show you all the he does have a mean streak to him…).
Welcome back Braddles… 1st time this year I have seen him and boy he hasn’t lost 1 bit of touch. I don’t know if it will be a permanent thing or not but you couldn’t miss him. He began running 150mrt sprints with Bentick, and not only did he keep up with him but also on some of the he was in front
. I don’t know if that's necessarily a good thing or not but gees wouldn’t he be a handy inclusion. Then at the end of training he ran 200's with Houlihan for about 15 min. Amazing to see a man nearly 40 keeping up with some guys nearly half his age.
Another welcome to Steven McKee
. The X Collingwood ruckman who will now be our ruck coach for this year. He will be at training maybe once or twice a week to help out our ruckman obviously. Fantastic acquisition here I think. He took the ruckman aside along with Browne and Armfield towards the end of the session for some group work for about 15 min.
Today's emphasis was really on kicking, intensity & match simulation drills. Fantastic to see especially this time of the year. Must make mention that I wasn’t really impressed with the boys kicking skills today. Especially Benjamin who would be an amazing footballer if he didn’t have to kick the footy…& Hartlett. Im really concerned about Harts right now. Simple marks he is dropping, hitting stationary target he is missing, his fitness levels aren't really where they should be for a KKP. Needs to really hit his straps between now and when training resumes after Christmas or he might find it difficult to keep his spot on the list after next year.
I will re-iterate it once again, Grigg will be a star. Has grunt, pace, agility and skills (well most of the time), but is being addressed as once again he along with Benjamin, Edwards, and one other bloke were taken aside by Ratts and Lappin for some kicking training. Gees I love the way the coaches are being specific this year.
Drills today included a match simulation drill. Interesting to note here that the ground was reduced in the width so it was more direct and up the corridor. Once again the new game plan was evident in a sense of high possession & short possession. None of this long kick to a pack, it was specific and well drilled. The emphasis in this drill was obviously bringing the ball from different areas on the ground to leading forwards & manning up. On a few occasions you heard Riley and Ratts giving it to blokes who gave their opponent 5 - 10 metres. Edwards really stood out in this drill. He was apposed to Jamison I think and lead him a merry dance. He took about 6 marks and went back and slotted about 4 of them. He looked really sharp and decisive, and will be a welcome addition to our HF line I think if he can get his body right. Scotland once again had plenty of the ball, but interesting to note that he was playing more as a forward than an onballer. I personally don’t think that we can take to much into positioning at training right now. Its probably just about mixing things up and not get people possibly accustomed to positions that they may play throughout a game next year. Houlihan played in the back line and Gibbs was only seen on the ball. Eddie Betts was his usual pesky self making a typical tackle from behind in his forward line. Carrazzo, Walker & Murphy had plenty of it and Carlos was running around like a mad man…lol. Stevens got involved in this and gees its good to see someone who con consistently deliver the footy to our forwards perfectly. We really missed him this year and it wont show until round 1 next year how important he is to our team and to Fevola.
From what I can gather the game plan next year will be based around 5 things.
1. Possession of the ball.
2. Short possession.
3. Use the corridor at all costs.
4. Heaps of pressure on both the player with the ball as well as any player within 20 metres of the ball.
5. Hardness. I couldn’t tell you how many times already ive seen guys throw their bodies into a pack and ive cringed and thought, gees take it easy, its only December. I don’t think that anyone will be allowed to shirk an issue with Ratts as our coach.
That is all for now. If I have forgotten anything please feel free to add on. If I have I will do so as well…
Cheers
