When I was a young bloke (about the time of the Boer War), we were always directed to rest the day before a game, running a race or pretty-well any sporting competition. With the Pies, this was certainly the case up to the early-1990s (at least), when the usual thing was to train on Thursdays, rest on Friday and play Saturday. Now, our guys seem to always have a hitout the day before a match - whether playing at home or travelling interstate. Questions:
1) What is the logic behind this;
2) When did it change (an MM/David B. idea?);
3) Do other clubs do the same thing or have different routines; and
4) Is it the norm in other sports as well?

I know that players are now full-time professonals (they weren't in the early-1990s) but, just because you can do something, that isn't in itself sufficient reason to actually do it. There must be a deeper reason.

It's not a really punishing session, it's more of a jog around while getting a feel of the footy.

Doubt it would tire them out any

Sam Dwyer also mentioned how he goes for a half hour walk on game day to get the juices flowing...

Would this actually make a positive difference to one's performance on game day?
