I really don't know how much of it is stupidty, how much is their job of pumping up the game for the masses, and how much is just hoping they get to write about a new victor.

Maybe a bit of the latter, but to me it seems like so many of the so-called football 'personalities' spend too much time talking, and not enough time thinking. "Don't think, DO" is fine as a player, but doesn't work so well when trying to analyse the game...

Being a champion player helps you build a media profile post-retirement, but you don't see too many making a success of coaching - coincidence? Also worth noting that many of our coaching staff haven't even played VFL/AFL, and those that have weren't exactly big names...

At the "Inside the Huddle" event this year Clarko said something very similar. He said any time they change the rules we will adapt and adapt faster and better than any other team. Very cocky, but it shows the confidence he has in the coaching and playing group and suggests that we love the challenge!
This isn't just an adaption to a knee jerk rule change over the summer though. This is something everyone has known was coming for years and pretty much everything about our recruiting and strategies in this last few years looks to be designed to take advantage of it. We will adapt faster and better to this rule change because the adaption process is well and truly in full steam.

People questioned at the time why we picked up another endurance runner in Hartung when we already had Smith and Hill and were apparently crying out for key position players and inside mids. Then we went out and got Frawley through free agency who is a strong KPD but also has good speed and endurance. We've also bided our time on the inside mids and our patience has paid off with Lovell and Burton who both tested well during the beep test.

Any club who has waited until NAB 2016 to see how this rule affects the game is already well behind us.

Dead right. I read an article a while back stating just that. Basically saying that Hawthorn were the first club to realise that coaches are educators these days and in order to educate you need to be able to teach. Clarkson, Bolton, Carroll, Rob McCartney and David Rath all have teaching backgrounds. As per usual the rest of the comp are only just starting to cotton on!

Players are on leave, so no training makes for no training news :(

Although, my wife told me my gut was getting a little big, (I weigh 72 kgs ffs woman!), so I started doing sit-ups and weight training for my shoulders/arms

I'm so sore I hurt when I cough!

I have got some spare (over)weight, I'd willingly share.

It may well be the end of the 'dinosaur type' as you say, Phat, but both had skill sets that made them more than useful.

Hale plays ruck and floating forward to grab big marks and kick goals.
Lake was a superb judge of the ball in flight and negate power forwards.

There is still room for these types of players and I would hate to think we revert back to the Gilham-type KPD simply because they are mobile.

Bwing back Bwian.
There will always be sides that have exceptional "Dinosaurs" on their list & Im sure if the timing was right Clarko would love a 200cm+ fwd 115kg that can run all day & clunk a mark; this won't be happening for at least 3-5 years I wouldn't have thought until this current list is exhausted & either a Shem type can make the leap or there is a big trade to get a Patton type to build around.
. FWIW I would have had Lake on a very small contract stating that he didn't need to play but be match ready & have a mentor/coach role for 2016... But that's just my own insecurities of the KPDs if Chip were to be hurt

Bang on the dolly with the Gilham reference, The Great Lord Pelican saw the future and it was one devoid of genuine KPF and as such required no need for the defenders who would stand those soon to be extinct beasts, the future as he prophesized was one consisting of an abundance of mobile and athletic mid sized players and well we saw how that panned out for us post Croad until........well until we nabbed Bwian for a price that could be labelled as daylight robbery.

Let's hope we don't make the same error of judgement again.

With Lake gone there is no doubt opposition clubs will try to exploit us down back
3 big units in their forward line, quick, long and direct footy to give them a chance one-out
Not saying it will work however
Brand, Spang, Chip, Kiwi, Gus, Strats, Silk, Hodge, ect... Dare I say Fitzy as well.... im pretty sure this is how we stack up for hieght if pushed into a corner; Gus ends the 190+ defenders. We're looking ok if a team goes tall as I think that Hawthorn hieght can counter & win out with pace. A stand a deliver wrestle for ball a drop... Not so sure but I would back these guys in to get it to ground at the very least, a very un Suckling bunch ;)

Putting a lot of faith in unknowns in Brand, Fitzy and Kiwi
Not to mention injury prone Chip and Spang
Gus also

The only thing that worries me is that Clarko did think about a replacement for Lake, and went out and didn't hide it by turning up on his doorstep during his holidays!

We never counted on getting McEvoy either though. Sometimes an opportunity presents itself through St Kildas incompetent list management. That time through their inability to seal a trade deal quickly and quietly. When a high performing KPP is on the trade table then it would be amiss not to enquire. And Clarko doesn't do things by halves - hence the trip over. Though the due diligence shouldn't be mistaken for a lack of faith in our young stocks either.
