The Media are going to eat this up.
From Pete Ryan. The injuries to Magpies pair Jeremy Howe and Darcy Moore were relatively minor, both of them leaving the track early with calf injuries. However, the nature of the injuries to the veteran pair who play critical roles in defence for the Magpies will create some anxiety given their age and importance.

Howe won't be a critical part of our defence this season. Disagree with Pete Ryan on that one.

Darcy Moore is 29. Let's pretend he's up there with the 35+ players.
He's 30 in a couple weeks, but no, he's not in the old man mode yet.

Was just having the same thought. Darcy already an old man? Senior and experienced yes - but it seems like only yesterday we were still working through his growing pains related youthful injuries and that pesky hammy.

Good to hear Prindlebury going well. If he doesn't win 2026 rising star I'm calling a rigged competition.

Hopefully Nick doesn’t take too many Brownlow votes off him

It's probably healthy for all of us to go into this season with minimal expectations.

This list is another year older and did not improve over the off-season (in fact one could argue that the list actually worsened based on the tipping out of AFL quality depth). As much as many Pies fans have high hopes for the likes of McInnes, Harrison, West, et al, it's ultimately a reliance on former late draft picks to improve our fortunes which history and logic would tell you doesn't tend to work. Two of those are coming off knees injuries too.

Be hopeful and optimistic, sure, but I think some realism about where we're at wouldn't go astray.

It also means I'm pre-emptively frustrated with the media telling us that a pass mark is to make a GF. They know full well our list is older and they keep telling us we have no young talent outside of Daicos. Yet apparently we have to have lofty expectations above and beyond the likes of Gold Coast or Hawthorn.

My expectations are low in general -- I see it as a transition year, in which we bring in players to replace the veterans. I think our team is still good. But when you look at Brisbane, Gold Coast, Fremantle, I just can't see us competing. We'll be around 6-8 maybe. If we make finals I'll be happy. So what I'm looking forward to is:

Reef
HH
all the res of the youth playing some games. Then, we need the old "reset". A couple of trades out and a few early picks -- balanced, not the Richmond model. A drop of 2-3 years then back up.

Do you think he will play forward, or simply won't play many senior games?

I don't think he will play many senior games. Should be managed through the season.

It's time for Cochrane, Ryan, McInnes etc to stand up and be counted.

Might have meant the other Freo game. We got smacked around the ball the first time we played them, but won it through quick rebound with Billy and Bobby putting on a show in a wide open forward line.
yes we got smashed at clearance in that game, which we learnt from, and were then far more effective in the return game.

Agreed, I don't have any expectations or predictions for season 2026, there's too many variables to consider. It's actually quite refreshing!

I don't to watch replay when the stats clearly indicate we did not get smashed at clearance.
Okay, you might need to look at additional stats or as I previously suggested watch the highlights.

This is My basic opinion of the game, obviously not yours, but I think you'll find it relatively accurate.

Enjoy!

In the first half Fremantle's midfield sliced and diced CFC's midfield from stoppages and midfield turn overs. Moving the ball forward with speed and precision from centre field delivering the ball on platter to Fremantle's forwards who where in good positions and converted establishing early score board pressure.

Second half, Collingwood closes down Fremantle's midfield dominance from centre field and dominate territory but Fremantle's midfield are able to continue scoring with direct, fast and precision ball movement this time from a defensive 50 m/back of the square field position.

Fremantles midfield did to Collingwood what Collingwoods midfield did to OPPO teams in 2023. Absorb pressure in the second half, find ways to score with out dominating territory through direct, fast, flowing ball movement from defensive positions.

CFC's midfield got flogged, there was little CFC quick flowing ball movement with execution and skill. Hack kicks from congestion was the order of the day and the Fremantle team defense and defensive position in the second half was excellent.

Fremantle taught CFC a lesson in the footy CFC wanted to play on the day, and FLY was not happy!

Please note that I haven't gone back and looked at replays or stats before posting, I apologise for any minor in accuracies. From memory if you look at forward entries you might find that Fremantle were effective at scoring.

Yep feels like a tough year coming up.

That was my expectation for last year and I was well off the mark. I can't see a repeat of last year, but my opinion is really not worth a lot. When I watched his first game, I thought Pendlebury was too slow, and in his first couple of years, i thought Dane Swan was just filling in until a decent player came along! I'll just wait and see.

Can't agree with that. If he isn't part of our plans then he should have been told his time was up at the end of 2025.

The reality is he has played really well when fit. The big issue is that he keeps getting injured.

I looked at 2025 as our last shot with the current group. If we are to do anything remarkable this year, it'll mean that 5-6 'young' blokes have taken over the roles of some of the 'older' crew. Here's hoping.

The reality is that he was injured so much and judging by his start this year that is not going to change but if it does it will probably be only for the worse. I hope to be amazed by him this year but I think it has passed him by.

He has been a great pick up by the club but if gets any injuries now he is out for weeks, how many games has he played the last 2 season he broke his arm against Geelong and missed virtually the season and last year he missed much of the season, I am hoping that Smit and Cochrane go pass him this year and Darcy stays healthy.

I think you got it right re Howe he should have been told 2025 was the end.

You are probably right 25 was our last realistic chance with group unless at least 4 young players can step up, at least 1 or 2 down back and probably the same in the midfield. Like you though I will still be supporting them in 27 and beyond come what may.

Howe played 19 games last year.
