He slowed down, got to big and will not slim down, and the game has got even more quicker which does not suit his game.
Wanted him to say to help Moore, but we look a better and quicker team with out him.
Would not want him back now. Went to the wrong team, game style does not suit the big fella

Time to retire and do a Fev.... play as a gun for hire. He's always been very durable and he'd monster blokes one on one at the lower levels.... 20 games of footy a year at 3-4k a game is a decent casual job for a few years

He can't take enough grabs to link our attacking chains or help our (frankly pathetic) forward 50 entries. He's no better a back up ruck than players 5cm smaller. He might kick 2 goals a game here and there but they'll be spectacular bombs outside 50 that lift the crowd but don't do much else. His second efforts are weak, he looks like he'd rather someone else did the work.


The reason I'm here is to ask what went wrong ? How did a bloke go from AA premiership forward to cooked before his 30th birthday without serious injury?

I really want to him to play VFL the rest of the year. Nothing personal, seems like a lovely bloke , but footy has passed him by.

Would any of you have him back at the Pies? That's a serious question Btw, I realise we aren't going to get a refund after 30 days

I used to like Trav and his footy but something went seriously wrong when he and dad held out for the mega contract deal and he has never been the same since. Maybe the weight of expectation was too much to bear but by the time he left I was over him as a pies player and glad he left.

Could have told you he was finished last season. The game changed and he didn't have the skills to change with it. Team defences are now too organised to allow him 1v1 with his opponent in the forward 50 and his kicking at goal costs his team games. There was a school of thought that he should play up the ground as a CHF like he did earlier in his career but tbh his ball use and decision-making are nearly as bad as his goal kicking. Cloke at CHF only worked at Collingwood b/c of the Malthouse gameplan of kicking long down the line to a contest, this tactic doesn't work anymore since it's predictable and easy to defend. I wanted him to leave Collingwood because imo Mason Cox is a better player than him which says a lot about where Cloke is as an AFL player.

Collingwood champion and Grand Final player though so will always have my respect.

He lost his marking ability and he has always been a poor kick.

Couple years ago he seemed to have forgotten that jumping is part of the game. Same with extended periods of running, he just stopped doing both for some reason.

There's no use in Cloke getting up the ground and not being able to get back into the forward line. His field kicking was always overrated because there just had to be something positive about his kicking.

We have a similar game style, we rely on agile forwards to lock the ball in.

He's a different beast to Fev.
Fev kicks goals and Clokey misses them from close in - he'd hear every word the crowd uttered.
Fev is a showman and Clokey isn't, not sure he'd like/handle the individual spotlight.

travis is so much on the outer at the dogs, that even the Dogs support staff are using fake moustaches to hide the fact that they're talking to him....

Rumour has it we told Cloke to shed weight mid last year, but his father as of the firm belief that he was a power forward and needed the size. So he refused to slim down . I can't see any major transformations to his body size this year either.

Interesting. You look at Riewoldt who dropped muscle mass to ease strain on his knee, and to help him stay mobile roaming up the ground, and I'm surprised Trav didn't take that on-board.

I still think he should have gone back to the roaming target up the wings, taking marks and kicking it into Moore, and still don't see why that wasn't done.

But, you can also add me into the surprised he hasn't done better at the Bulldogs camp.

My 2 cents.
Cloke was awful last year. Absolutely awful. He either didn't care or couldn't operate at previous levels. In all honesty he has been in steady decleine since 2013 and I wondered why the Bulldogs would bother.
He's never going to be considered "smart" and he seems to be only capable of playing one style of play.
I loved his effort and commitment for most of his time at Collingwood, but never considered him an out and out star. Even in his very best years he would let the team down at clutch moments (People conveniently forget the goals he missed in the first GF in 2010).
At lower levels where there isn;t such commitment to team defence and two way running Cloke would still be a challenging prospect, but his body has detiorated and unlike some other older statesman of the game he hasn't got the brain to adapt his game

he fit the malthouse kick long and stick to the boundary style..... but his brain does fascinate me. If I was pulling in more than three quarters of a million dollars a year, I would take ownership of the whole bad kicking deal and find a coach. He ended up looking like a lab rat... or a Frankenstein monster who was being operated on by various people. I said before that his kicking style looked programmed like he was told to take one step and then scratch his nose and then take another step ...and he followed it to the letter with no understanding of the fundamentals. We all talk about his lack of brain but he didn't appear that stupid in conversation although he did sound like his parents wiped his arse until his late teens... no wonder young people cant take ownership of their problems when their parents are continually butting into their lives like david cloke has. His father was whining before the last contract that the Pies weren't putting enough efforts into his leadership.....well someone should have told david that the first step to leadership is taking ownership of your life....I have to say that he's one of the few ex pie players that i'm happy to see fail. that wont change until I see him take the responsibility for his failure at the pies.

he did lose a lot of unnecessary weight. the dogs had him in hospital for a front lobotomy and they took out about 2 kilos of brain.

It's not so much his field kicking as his decision-making. Every time he gets it he kicks it forward as far as he can without looking. It just doesn't work anymore and he's proven incapable of handballing or lowering his eyes to shorter targets.

Funnily enough last year against the Giants in Sydney probably played his best game for the club, 4 Goals 15 marks and some rippers as well, running up and down the wings, it was his swan song to the pies and footy. Every game since then is pure superannuation. I'm surprised the dogs took him, For Clokey its smart to get what you get. If only Clokey could get his kicking for goal sorted out, he would of been considered as a Champion, instead hell go down in history as a good player.
