Do you think Travis Cloke will improve next year?
Please discuss in a civil manner.

Most forwards struggle when they are the main target

Cloke didnt struggle but didnt dominate it was good for him to experience life as the majer forward

This is the year i think Cloke will dominate with Rocca,Reid and maybe Rusling all doing there bit and Cloke playing 1 on 1 you might just see him stamp himself as a top 10 players

I would have hoped so.
His skills are what need the greatest development, as his physical apacity appears to be top notch.

which skills do u mean excatly? his firld kicking is very good good, he handballs well, is a lovely mark, and uses his physique to advantage....
his goal kicking seems to me to have improved - i doubt he'll ever be a JA shot on goal, but not may will - the only thing i believe tha he needs to improve is his ability to stamp his authority on more matches... granted last yeah he was the oppositions main target.. but if he is to become the souperstar we expect he needs to learn how to dominate.... rocca, reid, rusles etc. will play a big role in this...

having said that i think trav is going to be a superstar this year.. i expect 50-60 goals and him to dominate matches regularly...

His skills are very good as Spartan has said his real weakness is that he can go missing or not contribute but i also think that has alot to do with our piss weak game plan by kicking it down the wings but Cloke needs to kick 50 goals

Watch out next year Cloke and Didak will be fighting it out for AA and Copeland

if the time trial is anything to go by then i think its an indication of a big year, hes goin to be at his best in terms of fitness, put those forwards around him that were injured and use rocca as the decoy more often and i think clokey is going to worry a lot of teams.

He is our most important player by a mile.

Of his 11 highest ranking games for the season, we won 10 of them.

Of his other 12 games, we only won 3.

He's our conduit to goal, and him playing well means that our forward line is functioning properly. There's no real reason that he should be entirely shut out of a game - He can be stopped from scoring, but the only reason he shouldn't be taking marks up at half forward is that we're not moving the ball quickly enough, and we're not moving it through him.

Hopefully we have a big year from Trav, as I think he's our best.

Those who have said he's got good field kicking...wow.

I could count on one hand the number of player in the entire AFL with worse field-kicking/decision-making than Travis Cloke.

As vinny said, very important player for us, but he's certainly not without his weaknesses.

Travis needs to make the transition from a star to a superstar. On his day, he is very dangerous. But thats the problem, consistency. If he can have a consistent season and reduce the difference from his best and worst, we would have a premier genuine CHF.

YES.

He suffereed for being the only established key forward last year but even then he worked at his game and improved his goal kicking significantly. He is a worker and a smart footballer. I'd expect improvement year on year for a while yet.

All this bloke needs to learn how to do over summer is to kick straight.

One of the commentators actually nailed it when they said he gets far too nervous but I guess that will sort itself out with experience and time. He should improve, I hope he does.

I would agree that he does get nervous before kicking. When he wheels round on the left from 50 metres out he looks very good, usually kicks those, but when he's lining up for goal at close range he does look very uncomfortable. Usually these things sort themselves out in time, but obviously this is a problem that is not so much skill based but more mentally based, and as such it will probably need to be approached from a different angle.

The other reason why he was kept quiet for a lot of matches this year, which has been stated before in this thread, is because he took the main defender most weeks while Rocca was injured. While I rate Cloke as a genuine talent, I don't think he's quite ready to take on the best defender, he's still maturing as a player and it's hardly surprising that he was beaten by far more experienced campaigners. That being said, I think the experience of playing on these excellent players will hold him in good stead going forward.

Another point, which I'm not sure has been raised before, is that he's often a victim of our poor skills and our indirect gameplan. The amount of times I've seen Cloke lead up the ground, only for a teammate to kick a lollipop to him whereby he has to wait for the ball to come down is bordering on ridiculous. It's as if there's an expectation on him to take a contested mark every time. He also seems to receive a hell of a lot of grubber kicks which bounce up awkwardly which are very hard to control, especially for a big man. Our gameplan at times doesn't work in his favour; I feel he operates best when leading straight down the middle of the ground, but because of our indirect approach to goal he is often forced into more difficult positions where he can't be as damaging.

I think he had a lot of responsibility "dumped" on him last season, with Rusling, Reid and Rocca all out and such high expectations for the side after 2007.
I think he handled it pretty well for such a young KPP.
It was obvious his key focus was on his game and the team all year.

Has the physical attributes, the skills and seems like a mature, grounded sort of kid. He has the potential to be an absolute superstar of the game, but just needs to pull it all together and dominate. i expect that by the time he is 24 or 25 he will be unstoppable. still developing and on the right track. i see him as a potential captain material. love the trav.
