TRAVIS Varcoe was 16, travelling overseas for the first time. He got himself to the airport, checked in and went through customs. He worked out where to go during the stopover, he survived the long flight to London and he caught the right plane to Ireland. It was only as the teenager was on a bus with his Australian teammates, headed for their hotel in Belfast, that he looked inside his bag and realised his traveller's cheques were gone.

ha ha. What an awesome read. Gee he sounds level headed for a kid.

And also bloody good that he didn't trot out the old "I'm happy to play where they play me"

But rather he wants a midfield role and he's going to train for it.

One thing I have been thinking about is his kicking.
He is a fairly long kick already. But I reckon with the extra year of preseason he may become a very potent long kick.

It's something Gaz didn't develop until around 07.

Imagine varcoe bursting out of the centre and banging it home from 55

She was way off with his draft selection though.

Yeah I was scratching my head and thinking 'I thought he was pick 7 or so"

Pick 15 2005.

Didn't know he once had the 'Egan' type diagnosis. Great for us that it didn't turn out that badly.

Can't believe Trav went through the whole trip without any money...always suspected he was quite a shy boy. Good to see him growing up.

Very very shy. When I was sitting next to him at the 2008 Season Launch dinner I was pretty shy but quickly realised he was the most shy on the table.

And best of all he is a marrying a Geelong girl so he will be nicely settled down Geelong.

He sounds like a lovely kid. Reckon we'll see the number 5 back on the terraces en masse next year.

Our genuine excitement machine, with Wojo, at contrasting stages of careers. These are the guys I love to watch at Geelong. Hoping the potential next #29, Adam Varcoe, is also a gun.

I won't be joining that til the 31 retires. :D

But I reckon Trav will be even more of a gun in a few years so I'll have plenty of time to join.

Hope he gets more midfield time next year.

The interesting thing is that he makes the comment that he was carried for a few games and that the coaching staff belief in him was instrumental in his development.

For those that have knocked Bomber for keeping people when they should not have been playing..... i believe " touche" is in order.....

I know that playing vets past their prime and giving young uns a chance is different, but clearly GFC is better for Bomber and his crew sticking with Trav as I believe he has the skills and determination to match Cyril Rioli in terms of influence on the game.

Same speed, same ability, same fitness = all great things for him and the club.

Also, with Voldemort (he whom can't be mentioned!) vacating, there is more midfield time to be had and he would be a prime candidate....

Go Catters:

Lets get real.

He performed much better last year, however is nowhere near the player Gary was
He has difficulty finding the ball often enough and is also injury prone with his shoulder.
I see him more as a S Johnson flashy type player

He is possibly ahead of Ablett at the respective time in Ablett's career though.

I can't remember the source but I definitely remember Bomber admitting that he was against playing Varcoe at first and he had to be talked into it by the selection committee.

She was way off with his draft selection though.
Give her a break! - she was writing this in Ireland, not her office. Plus it was probably a sub who got it wrong.

Probably. Only takes five seconds to Google draft picks though.

Wow... it is pretty exciting reading about him actually. The development in the last two years has been mammoth to say the least and he is set to improve more in the coming years due to moving more into the starting midfield. Maybe in a few years time, people who knocked the club for handing him the number 5 maybe eating their words. Fingers crossed Adam can have a big year in the VFL and push for promotion mid year.

Still have my old number 5 jersey from when i was a kid, I retired it myself, but I may bring it back. Might need a few alterations though, im pretty sure i've grown a bit since adolescents

From Emma Qayles twitter:

The other highlight at Dromoland was Trav Varcoe getting on the guitar and singing Stand By Me, that boy has some talent!

oh and in real news from her

Varcoe trained upon arrival in Dublin, and Wojo had a little run around and told us he was a certainty to play this Saturday.
