I really don't get the Collins love. The kid had one moment of glory where he happened to be in the right spot at the right time and everyone talks him up like we've lost a future star. Its the opposite of what normally happens on this board where most posters remember when a player they don't like stuffs up and uses that as the basis for not liking that player.

Yes...and if that is the case...are you then happy with grigg's contribution to the side in2011......

okay my perspective on andy collins.yep im a supporter of him.

was taken the same yr as grigg as a very very skinny 5th rnd pick #73.it was a good pick because of the good attributes collins had.he could have gone rookie draft i suppose.
i would describe him as an old fashioned goal kicking centreman who knows where to go to get the ball.good kick and footy nous. good endurance good in the air for his size in fact his skill level was pretty good. imo the only reason he didnt go a bit higher was his skinny frame and the perception that he may struggle to bulk up adequately. on talent alone id say he was one of the better picks taken in the 70s in the nd over the yrs.

when drafted he was litterally a weed. sheesh would not have been 70kg wringing wet. his size was always going to limit him early in his career. he was not only going to struggle at afl level for two or three seasons but at coburg as well.

with such a player there should never have been expectations on him playing afl for two seasons at least. and he didnt.
as it panned out in yr 1 07 he had groin problems which turned into full blown osteitis pubis. basically destroying his first yr.

yr 2 08 overcoming op still he bounced back and played some real good footy at coburg .
still only 72 kg the weight was still the biggest single thing holding him back.
to this point id say he had done more than enough in fact id say he was in front of expectations.

09 yr 3. he grew 3 cm and put on 6 kg to be 186/78 still about 7kg of the pace.
this yr he made his debut. he actually earnt a game because of his continued good form at coburg.
he played 10 games up to rnd 14 playing on a wing/hf. he averaged 19 possesions a game and kicked 8 goals. unfortunately rnd 14 he injured his hip and missed the rest of the season.

so to this point this kid was tracking very well with a fair bit of upside to come, what ould he do if he got to a decent weight and we could play him primarily as a mid.

2010 yr 4 grew 1cm and gained 2 kg still well off where he needs to be especially if hes to play midfield. obviously hes a work in progress.
he plays 15 games almost exclusively as a hf. he averages 15 possesions for the yr a good stat actually given his role and managed 15 goals at 1 a game not bad but could be better. we are forced to play him forward because no other sml/med can kick a goal and he still hasnt bulked enough to go and play the role hes best suited to.
again id say hes tracking along okay but he does need to keep on improving.i for one still think he has plenty of upside.

as it pans out we trade him. he basically misses the entire 2011 season due to shoulder injury. do we write him off because hes been injured again or do we wait and see.

when looking at both collins and grigg at the end of 2010 if i was asked who has more upside i would have said collins.
to me just two things need to be looked at when making a call on collins size and durability. because to date id say its these things that have held him back not talent. id also say its been his size that has left him open to injury.

at the time of the trade i was happy for us to get grigg i really liked him as a junior.
but i for one advocated we keep collins and retain both on the list.
clearly in the short term grigg has it over collins but im not totally writing collins off and would not be surprised to see that turn around.

Fair summary Santa, no real issues from me.
I think the size issue is the most important one with Andy in an absolute sense and also relative to Grigg. I think we've seen that emphasised this year with subsequent list additions.
As far as Grigg goes I think posters should wonder why he finished so high in the B&F without having any obvious standout games. The answer may well be that he's doing a significant job on match days that the average punter doesn't appreciate. We all see the faults but there's obviously a solid contribution that goes unnoticed.
No star but the trade is a clear win for the Tiges on 2011 form. If Collins comes back we'll reassess in 12 months.
Don't see why you've time to be on here Santa, get back to work. My kids are waiting for their bikes!
