Bit of a chuckle...

Make sure we don't get used to it but very much appreciated...

We just need a couple of journos inside the bubble to pick up the "story"/farce...

In my opinion, if you want to stay with your family that's perfectly fine and you're entitled to that. If that's the case, though, you don't nominate for the draft in which the conditions are that you will quite likely leave home. Nominating for the draft is, in many ways, a commitment that you're okay with that. Because from that point, club's make heavy investments in these players, and them deciding that they don't want to be away from home after all leaves the club very disadvantaged.

In reality though various players may well be nominating for the draft with the comfort that they are only stuck with an interstate team for two years before they can come home. The expansion of free agency erodes even further this sense of loyalty that you are referring to.

Anyone able to bring up Polec and Doc's goodbye tweets? I don't use it but hear that they're identical. It adds salt to the wound that one of them couldn't even be bothered to write their own message of thanks.

I noticed Fev has been sticking it to Jon Ralph regarding some of the issues that were supposedly facing the homesick 5.

Say what you will about Fev, even after he finished up here on a bad note he's been pretty vocal in his support of the club.

Thanks Fev :thumbsu:

Pies think Karnezis can be elite. Which is hype. But basically confirms Pies think the Lions development was rubbish. Big issue for Leppa

Young Lions said they couldn't access Gabba for extra kicking, sometimes reviewed their game edits alone. Development factor in departures

What did Fev say?
I can't remember exactly was just sticking up for the Lions and saying that the facitlities were great.

@RalphyHeraldSun There's 3 grounds down the road for extra kicking Ralphy, that's just an excuse. If you want extras they are easily done.

I feel like the tweets from Pearce and Tom suggest that the homesick 5 are just sooks who didn't get along with the main group at the club. Thoughts?

It does sound like the departing five didn't integrate particularly well into the club and I think a few of them used to hang out/lived with each other which can't have helped when some were struggling with living in Brisbane. Probably one thing that has to be seriously looked at is making sure that these kinds of groups don't form up in the future and that there is more inclusiveness. I know this will sound a little high school, but maybe some kind of mentoring system when a senior player looks out for a new draftee?

Erikson's stuff has been expended a bit in recent times. That smack bang in middle period that you are referring to is now called 'emerging adulthood'.

I definitely agree, not a great time to be drafted. Frontal lobes aren't even fully developed at 18. Impulse control and forward planning isn't developed yet.

I tell ya, when I was their age, my hood was always emerging too.

Contrast with the NFL where players generally have at least a few years of college, if not a full degree under their belt before they get drafted around age 21-22. Not a lot of go-home factor in the NFL.

They also get signed to four or five year initial contracts, so by the time they're done with those they might as well be home.

That's interesting. I wonder whether extending the initial contract period to four years would help any in the AFL. It would give the clubs some protection at least and leverage if they do end up getting traded home earlier.

For people brought up in a footy culture where being a one club player meant something, it is hard to cop players leaving purely because they would prefer to be in their home town.

When these guys nominated for the draft, they knew the likelihood that their destination club would not be in their home state. This is part of the deal of being a professional Aussie Rules footballer.

I can't feel sorry for them when their actions will probably leave my club in a worse place. And I refuse to assume that there is some pressing personal reason for each of them needing desperately to get home because we have no evidence of that.

And before the response, I am also incredibly angry at the club for allowing a culture or environment to develop where so many players would prefer to be somewhere else.

Just a quick question then, what do you think of Pearce Hanley's comments? Do you feel they were appropriate or perhaps part of something bigger?
From the outside, and believe me I'd know what with my club, it looks odd and seems like a poor tweet all in all.

People spend time complaining about how boring footballers all are and never speaking their mind.

Nice one, Fev.

Given his tweets and Rocky's recent pics, it's fair to say he still has some friends at the club.

Good on him!....Pearce has come all the way from Ireland, without family, so to him it probably seems baffling and...weak.

I have no problem with it, others might but I certainly don't...

..and as a mother whose son did the reverse (left vic to go to QLD) at the age of 20, all I can say is, I hated him going and I still miss him, but he was an adult and off to see the world....was not my place to stop him.

The mothers of these boys should be realising that as well. Imo the parents should be encouraging their sons to go forth, enjoy your gift of being an elite footballer, wherever that might be.....and become a man.

EFA.

Fev actually seems like a good enough bloke, pity what Carlton did to him.
