Just finished re-watching the Brisbane game and was thinking about 2 things:

1. Rutten - His performance against Brown showed me that he's got enough talent to match it with the best CHF in the competition - plus he's about as big and strong as J. Brown, so why aren't we playing HIM at CHF instead of Perrie?

2. Thompson - any doubt now he's much better than Stenglein and we won that trade?

I think Rutten CAN be something special..but at the moment playing Rutten at FB does 2 things for me

1. He learns a defensive side to his game
2. He frees up Nathan Bassett

I am still out on the Thompson/Stenglein trade as I believe both clubs have had a win/win on that deal.

Call it a draw

1. I think Rutten does have the potential & smarts to play CHF, but not yet, as we don't have any other good options for FB. Use Kenny for now, as we have others who can play CHB.

2. As has been mentioned, we are ahead on the Stinger trade, even if Gibson never plays a game.

As much as i disliked losing Stenglein we definitely have come up trumps with his replacement in fact I would call it a win + :)

Have said it till i'm blue in the face but Ben Rutten is a gun chf in waiting.

He attacks the ball head on & is improving in all aspects of the game & don't forget his first 3 kicks in AFL resulted in goals from a distance.

When the time is right i'm pretty sure we will see Craigy give Rutten a chance to show what he can in an attacking role up forward.

Think the truck is doing just fine at the moment so wouldnt move him just yet.
But Saturday evening was not a good night for marking forwards. Not saying he didnt do a great job he did and got my votes for BOG. What I like about him also is he is not a stay at home negative backman, he risks his arm and goes off his man to start up play towards the no hopers.

Unitl we someone who can replace him (is Bock worth trying there as Benny Rutten was a bolt out of the blue) I would leave him there.

Just my two jacks worth.

I think Rutten is a much better FB/CHB than he would be at FF/CHF.

He reads the play much better with everyone ahead of him and he will very rarely be out bodied. I also dont think he is agile enough to play CHF. I'd suggest hid turning circle has some thing to do with his nickname.

Leave him at the back for me. Watts is a much more natural forward and IMO should be the clubs focus as the CHF we need to develop.

Oh, and Thomo is an absolute gun, Stenglien is a very good player. No doubt we won that one.

Couldn't agree more. :)
Keep Rutten at FB/CHB
Develop Watts as a key forward and Hentschell/McGregor as other key forward/defender.

rutten will struggle at a true CHF, brown was often playing at FF. Rutten doesnt have the mobility. I think we should be leaving kenny at CHB, until this yr he had just been improving more and more there. Let the natural forwards play up there like fergus. It looks as though we are going to play kenny at FF and perrie and CHF and bock at CHB, which would be a shame, play fergus and stop having these short term solutions.

Agree 200%. It's time to bite the bullet with Watts and groom him as our key forward. There will be some pain for both Fergus and us supporters in the short term, but I am fairly confident he'll come through.

I'll be very disappointed if he's not selected tonight.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

I can't figure some poeple out. A couple of years ago we were CRYING out for a genuine FB thats big enough to play on big key forwards. For the first time in our history we actually have a genuine FB, a big lad that can negatate opposition's best key forward and still provide some rebound from the backline and be more attacking. For some reason, now that we got this type player we want to move him forward

We have players that we need to develop as forwards and those players have the potential to be better forwards than Rutten. Finding a big strong, good FB is just as hard as finding a CHF so why would be rob peter to pay paul??????

Leave Rutten at FB and develop Watts as a CHF. Fergus has more potential as a CHF than Rutten where as Rutten is infinetly better FB.

Lets develop these 2 players in positions we want them to play down the track and stop throwing them all over the field.

As for Thompson trade, even if Gibson turns out to be a major bust, we still won the trade hands down.

Got to agree.

Rutten is the best full back we have ever had (no one pays me out over that statement any more). We have waited 14 years for one so lets keep him there for a while. We can always give him a run forward during a game if situation/matchups allow.

I think that "don't forget, he kicked 3 goals with his 1st 3 kicks" will soon rank with "Rod Jamerson won the inaugral goal kicking" as the most often repeated bit of crows trivia.

Thompson ********s all over Stenglein.

i fully agree - we finally have a FB and an attacking one at that - in any case i have reservations about Truck successfully holding down CHF

Backs: i believe that Bock's natural position is at CHB or BP and prefer to see Hentschel down back too - however we have Rutten,McGregor, Hart & Bassett there so i guess Bock may have to bide his time as a depth player to cover for injury until Bassett & Hart retire (or McGregor traded?) with Hentschel having first go at any available back position and meanwhile Hentschel can be on the interchange bench as a back or forward - however i have also wondered how Hentschel may go on the wing or on the ball

Forwards: i think Watts is a natural CHF and that he plays better there than at FF because of the extra space to move - i think he'll be ready next year but i would like to see him be given about 10 games this year with no pressure of expectations to perform
Burton i would have running around the forward line (he at least can chase players)
and i still believe (hope??) that Freddy Krueger will overcome his back injury and give us that FF we have been desperately searching for since Modra
- at least with Freddy you can bomb the ball in there
as for crumbers? - in the current squad i can only see Burton,Ladhams capable unless Skippy goes to kicking school and changes his kicking technique to find another 10 yards in his kicking
- in the draft/trade period we just have to find some real pacy crumbers/midfielders probably aboriginal

I think you maybe onto something here Nod. However, I would hate to take the risk of his game suffering by moving him forward. I also get the impression, from interviews, that he would much rather play up forward then down back.

Maybe in a few years. It's a pity he didn't have a twin.

Why not give Bock and Smith  a chance, who knows they may shock us. Why else would they be on the list.

Could be an option down the track. Move Kenny to CHF, Rutten to CHB, Bock or Smith to FB see how it goes. Personally I don't think either Smith or Bock are good enough to play AFL but at least we won't die wondering.

Bock succeeding at CHB wouldn't be a total shock. His form in the SANFL in defence has been terrific.

In Smith's case I'm prepared to die wondering.

:D

Actually, if Smith does get a game, I reckon we will be the laughing stock of BigFooty. Every seen him run, he runs like my sister in high heels.

Only when she wants to be caught by the guy chasing her.

Smithy doesn't run very quickly.
