He gets a 2 year deal as a rookie.

Give the kid a chance
Rookies are a mandatory 1-year deal .....Welsh has the 2nd year of his Contract, so will see that out as a Rookie

The appeal for Clubs with rookies is the 1-year Contract versus the 2 year Contracts (3 for 1st round) the National Draft

I had high hopes for Welsh, but watching him last year tempered those somewhat and this year even much more so. Unless he pulls a rabbit out of his hat, and I don't see him doing something that left field, I don't think he makes it. Lets hope I am proven wrong.

That’s disappointing, the kids got pace.

We can’t pick him as a catB if he goes undrafted ?

So we’ll definitely use 3 ND picks ? We currently have 1 first, 3x thirds. Unless we shuffle picks you’d think we’d swap a third to next year
In order to be eligible for the Cat B rookie list, a player needs to meet one of the following criteria:
  • Former International Scholarship List player at the nominating club
  • International Player
  • Player who has not been registered or played in an Australian Football competition for 3 years
  • Academy Player
  • NGA Player
I don't believe he would meet any of those criteria.

As for shuffling picks... that assumes we can find someone who actually wants an extra 3rd round pick in this year's draft. This year's draft is a buyer's market, with most clubs looking to minimise their exposure as much as possible. We can only try...

If the club thought he had it they wouldnt have cut him with the promise and risk losing him. Im wondering if they are hoping another club tries to snap him up.

OR ..Welsh was considered the least likely to be nabbed by another Club

Acceptance by the player also would have been a consideration .....I'm trying to think of alternatives to Welsh ....maybe Jones or Sholl, however based on 2024, Welsh would probably get the in-house locker room seal of approval

Important IMO, as player retention is equally important as drafting / trading

I reckon cromulant meant he got a 2 year deal as a draftee (but used the word rookie instead), countering maxlilly who said it was a bad contract.

Cant say this is a surprise. I hope he has a real crack this season and gives himself an opportunity, but I won't lie, I dont see him on a AFL list in 2027.

Definitely would looking to develop another young forward in 2026.

It looks like we use our rookie list to cover for bad contracts
We've given a player too long a contract, oh, lets delist them and re-rookie them

I think we would be better just ripping the band aid off and leaving them delisted

Or maybe we don't hand out stupid contracts to fringe players in the first place
All clubs do it.

It's because of the stupid rule about taking 3 draft picks every year which has no value, and all clubs do this to get around it.

Another overly complicated rule we can just scrap.

Contracts are supposed to be honoured. There are definitely salary cap implications for delisting a contracted player, but whether or not that would have been enough to prevent us from delisting such a player is a question which can only be answered from within the club.

Placing Strachan on the Inactive List enabled us to sign McAndrew in the PSSP, so we ended up having the best of both worlds - a SANFL backup ruckman, without compromising our 2024 salary cap or being seen as a club which dishonours contracts.
Ok, Burgess then. I'm sure the 120k we'd pay him out would be fine to accommodate, and then we have Dobson on the list now.

Not all clubs use it for storing soon to be delisted players to the same degree as us. It is still used for taking a punt on a kid by other clubs. But agree, ever since they allowed rookies to play without an elevation mechanism it became redundant.

You can name whichever SANFL-based fringe/depth player you like, it doesn't alter the fact that they were all contracted.

As has been pointed out, the big mistake was letting Smith reach his contract trigger. Without this, we would have had another uncontracted player who we could have delisted without causing salary cap problems.

We knew Smith had hit his trigger a long way out, if we couldn’t organise pushing back a couple hundred gorillas so we could delist him or another lowly paid backup slug then LM is incompetent. Not to mention the rolling cap flexibility.

Smith added a lot more to the team than Burgess and Strachan combined.

Yes, and no.

Burgess & Strachan provided SANFL-based depth, in areas where our depth was otherwise extremely weak. Any injuries to the AFL-based players and they would have been required. Fortunately, we were relatively injury free in 2025.

You guys are extremely harsh and pessimistic on Welsh. He was starting to go really well when an untimely injury took out about a third of his season this year. Came back but never reached the same heights.

He's frequently played on a wing and as a half forward as well I think (though it's sometimes hard to tell with shitty SANFL camera angles). He only plays as a main forward target intermittently. Perhaps with Burgess going this year and most likely Tex going next (so.another twos forward goes up to the ones) he will start to.get the opportunities.

Also, our game plan will always make players look worse than they are, we are contest focussed and oppo to constantly flood our forward half.

I think he's doing alright, be a year or three yet before I have concerns about his trajectory. Would like good reports this preseason though, should be made to train and keep up with Tex.

He's just been delisted. Clearly the club doesn't think he's progressed well enough.

I like to think that our SANFL team be a team playing same style and tactically as the AFL team and that we can be next man up. Welsh should be a mini Fog.

Said earlier this year he will be playing ammo Footy soon. Probably under Ned McHenry.

Yeah we will Rookie him....but he is heading that way.
