We had to delist a senior list player to make room for Ah Chee + 3 draft picks. There is no extra spot for a DFA.Opening a spot up for a delisted player?

No thanks. It’s bad enough here. “The umpires made sure so and so team won” or “the AFL made sure a Victorian team was in the GF.” I’d hate to see political threadsYou should try reading the political threads.
May not be exactly the same but Ben Keays wasBeing delisted and put on the rookie list has a history of being delisted the next year or never playing more than a handful of games: Shoey and Burgess last year, Will Hamill the year before, then Andrew Mcpherson, Ben Davis, Paul Hunter, Kieran Strachan (2018), Cam Ellis-Yolmen and I've probably missed some.
Not a single success I can recall. We should show more guts and take a risk to find a 200 game player

It's not the same. Keays has not been listed, delisted and re-rookied by the Crows. We've had good success with the rookie list overall but never when they've been previously on the main list and delisted.May not be exactly the same but Ben Keays was
- Originally drafted by Brisbane Lions with Pick #24 in the 2015 National Draft.
- Played 30 games for Brisbane between 2016 and 2019.
- Delisted by Brisbane at the end of the 2019 season.
- Picked up by Adelaide with Pick #7 in the 2019 Rookie Draft. [afc.com.au], [en.wikipedia.org]

We drated him because we weren't using that pick on anyone else IIRC. Not sure but I don't think we had the list spots to take anyone else and rookie Welsh? We could have taken Dodson last year instead right?
I think that was where we needed to be more ruthless and either pass on Welsh or take him as a rookie.
We drafted him. He deserves 2 years now. Didn’t show a lot but also had injuries.
He’s on notice now so this preseason he works his ass off and gives himself a shot. If not, his AFL career will be over before it begins.
Maybe it’s time one of our own became a success then! It's not the same. Keays has not been listed, delisted and re-rookied by the Crows. We've had good success with the rookie list overall but never when they've been previously on the main list and delisted.
You do realise that most (if not all) of these players were already contracted when they were shuffled to the rookie list? Failing to re-draft them would have had salary cap implications, and may not have even been possible.Being delisted and put on the rookie list has a history of being delisted the next year or never playing more than a handful of games: Shoey and Burgess last year, Will Hamill the year before, then Andrew Mcpherson, Ben Davis, Paul Hunter, Kieran Strachan (2018), Cam Ellis-Yolmen and I've probably missed some.

There's a fair argument that it came down to a choice between Dodson & Welsh in the ND, and we chose Welsh. We didn't have the option of taking both, and we didn't have the option of taking Welsh in the RD for the same reason we can't take Stevens in the RD this year.We drated him because we weren't using that pick on anyone else IIRC. This is where not paying out Strachan (or Burgess, etc) last year cost us that spot. There's a fair argument that it came down to a choice between Dodson & Welsh in the ND, and we chose Welsh. I'm against taking a 30 YO veteran of a club, and putting him on the rookie listYou do realise that most (if not all) of these players were already contracted when they were shuffled to the rookie list? Failing to re-draft them would have had salary cap implications, and may not have even been possible.
Further, shuffling them to the rookie list freed up positions on the senior list, enabling us to make an extra selection in the ND - where the draft pool is deeper (compared to the RD). Can you please explain how this is a bad thing?
You are 100% correct that this is how the rookie list was originally intended to be used. To be fair, 3 of our current rookies fit this description - Turray, Borlase and McAndrew.I'm against taking a 30 YO veteran of a club, and putting him on the rookie list
I understand the jist of your argument ....however, I still believe the rookie list was intended for players not drafted, that require further development, rather than lose them to the system
This manipulation by AFL Clubs is detrimental to the original intensions of rookie lists ......I'm in principle against delisting players off the main list & rookie them .....if a Club does that, they should not be allowed to rookie them, however another rival Club may rookie them, the incumbent Club libel for any Contract shortfall
Contracts are supposed to be honoured. There are definitely salary cap implications for delisting a contracted player, but whether or not that would have been enough to prevent us from delisting such a player is a question which can only be answered from within the club. This is where not paying out Strachan (or Burgess, etc) last year cost us that spot.
Could have had Dobson in the main draft and Welsh as a rookie.
People were talking like it was an issue with cap space, but I think it was just us honouring the contracts
Yes if Brodie Smith hadn't hit his games triggerWe could have taken Dodson last year instead right?

Maybe he decided to do it himself but couldn't stop eating??? He has attributes to succeed in the AFL with pace and agility for his height but is coming back from a long way with his fitness and then got a long term foot injury which made this even harder.Surely this puts to bed the stupid theory that he didn't go 100% in his draft year so the club didn't have to match a high bid.
There is no way the club would of asked him to do that.
He gets a 2 year deal as a rookie. It looks like we use our rookie list to cover for bad contracts
We've given a player too long a contract, oh, lets delist them and re-rookie them
I think we would be better just ripping the band aid off and leaving them delisted
Or maybe we don't hand out stupid contracts to fringe players in the first place
I was referring to a post that said that we delist and re rookie a lot of players, but Welsh is in the same boatHe gets a 2 year deal as a rookie.
Give the kid a chance
So youve doubled down.I was referring to a post that said that we delist and re rookie a lot of players, but Welsh is in the same boat
You know this is a footy forum right, where people talk about footballSo youve doubled down.
