Analysis Umpires

McKay was being manhandled at every contest and somehow he was giving away frees.

Down the other end Dixon was looked after so well by the umps, his teammates could even block Jones out from competing.
this is then shite that I just cannot abide ... be farkin consistent!

the team that plays Port next will benefit , Some of the blocks were obvious .... step in path 20m from the ball to stop Jones run .... will be highlighted by media at some stage !!

Wasn't great today, but I refuse to blame them for the loss.

If only Casboult hadn't fluffed his lines 15 mtrs out in the 2nd quarter (for example)

I am sure David Teague will not blame the umpires and nor should we.
They didn't change the result, but they changed momentum.

Not saying they do it on purpose but it does happen. We just notice it when it happens to 'us' more.

Today's game had me scratching my head often.

Also had plenty of neutral fans commenting on the umpiring as well. So it's not really my bias (of there is plenty) talking.

Of course they can. Those 50/50 calls just need to go 60/40 and it's a huge difference.

I hear this a lot, so it probably bears asking.

What specifically is a 50/50 call? Define what constitutes a 50/50 call so we can be sure we're talking about the right thing.

Is it:
a) a decision which is technically there, but could be let go in the interests of letting the game flow?
b) a type of decision which must go one way or the other, in which there is no middle ground (ie, a player is about to pick up the ball with someone right on them; he goes to pick it up does, is tackled and releases the ball but is dragged to ground).?
c) something else?

Two players holding each others jumpers. Two players locking arms. Both examples didn't play out well for us tonight.

Funny how we can point to player mistakes such as a missed shot at goal and show how they impacted on the game, umpire errors where they incorrectly pay free kicks resulting in a shot at goal apparently have no influence on the final result.

What utter crap.

wut? 98% of posters believe it - do you really need to have 100% of people screaming at umpires? when is enough enough? you are killing me, lisa!!!!

Don’t care if people are all yelling or not, just don’t like pretending an incorrect decision has no impact. Please don’t piss on my back and tell me it is raining.

Don‘t agree that umpires are corrupt, they are humans with natural biases based on their life’s experiences. They make mistakes, they call some players for things that superstars get away with, they fail to acknowledge serial offenders who dive for example and get sucked into paying frees that aren’t there week after week.

Bad umpiring can kill momentum like a crap shot at goal or pass that gets rebounded for a goal. It happens and it should be allowed to be called out and discussed without the bullshit call that it has zero impact on the game.

the problem with your idea is every decision effects the result...............next.........
The problem with your stance is that no decision ever affects the result.

Patently untrue or there could never be a result.

I think that the game would be better off with fewer umpires on the field - one each for each half of the field would help a lot with getting more consistency - NRL (who cares) went back to one ump - for exactly that reason.

do you want umpires or not? cause you have no game without em - are you saying the umpires lost the game for carlton today? are you? well? are you?
Of course you need umpires, doesn’t mean they are infallible.

Never said they lost the game, we had our chances and didn’t capitalise. This also doesn’t mean that without their influence the result would not be different.

For example, the last goal that Dixon kicked was as a direct result of Jones being held and blocked from impacting the contest. Without that goal, the kick after the siren can’t possibly win the game.
Had an impact? Yes
Caused the loss? No

Can‘t get my head around believing hundreds of decisions made by umpires in a match happen in a vacuum with no impact on the final margin. It doesn’t mean they are cheats or corrupt, just means they had an impact.

Go hard as you like at people saying the umpires deliberately cheat etc., just don’t pretend their decision making doesn’t impact on the game.
