There is no conspiracy against Carlton - that is ridiculous.
The reality, though, is that the umpiring is atrocious - probably at an all-time low. The question is, who is to blame and how do we solve or at least improve it? In my opinion, a good start would be for the AFL to openly acknowledge that there is an issue. Once it is acknowledged, the industry can work towards a solution. It would be a big step for the AFL, which as an organisation, is very controlling and prefers to sweep unfavourable issues under the carpet.
It's probably been mentioned in this thread before (this is literally the first time I've been in this thread) - a 2006 Harvard study strongly indicates home crowd/ground bias, with increasing levels of bias dependent on variables such as crowd size and density, among other things.
See the study here: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/02640410601038576
In the AFL, it likely includes (and goes beyond) crowd bias, which suggests other issues at play. Who knows what those issues are - need a roundtable or study to nut it out. In a completely non-scientific guess, I would raise: a bias to more successful teams (subconscious), over-complication of the rules or lack of clarity of the rules (from an umpiring perspective), player behaviour...
Whatever it is, for the good of the game, it needs to be acknowledged with steps taken to rectify it. At the moment, it's literally damaging the game. I know a lot of people who are watching far less footy at the moment because of it. I've walked away away from a few non-Carlton games myself. My concern is that if it is not acknowledged soon, the damage will be permanent.
