Analysis Umpires

I think that the game would be better off with fewer umpires on the field - one each for each half of the field would help a lot with getting more consistency - NRL (who cares) went back to one ump - for exactly that reason.

I think we should start a clone program. If the umpires were sets of triplets they would all think the same way and voila consistency.

It is the only game in the world that has three umps on the same field at the same time - inconsistency is a guaranteed outcome as are errors and in some cases agendas - it has all been documented over the years and on display in every game...

the AFL and its willingness to change the way rules should or not be interpreted as well as rules themselves, has to carry a fair amount of the responsibility - which is why it pretty much bans commentators from saying anything.

I guess you will decide what is correct and I’ll like it?

Just watching the reply and noticed something that hasn't occurred to me before.

3rd quarter, we deliver the ball into forward 50, port guy fumbles, Harry pushes him in the chest and is pinged for front on contact.

Now, forwards are allowed to push a defender in the chest whilst going for a mark, no free kick, players are allowed to shove players in the chest to fend them off, no free kick.

How do you have a rule that allows a forward to push a defender in the chest but not the other way around?

There were 3 on H that I got no idea what they were for, that was one of them and would have been a shot on goal with the defender on the ground and H upright about to pick it up and run in.

Another when he was ten metres out from goal in front with the port defenders arm around him stopping him from going for the ball

Clearly none of them affected the outcome of the game...

We win a game, we don't complain about umpiring, we lose a game, we complain, such is life as a sports fan.

I thought the umpiring was pretty average to be honest. Umpires make mistakes just like anybody, dont think they deliberately tried to sabotage our game, they just seemed inconsistent this time around.

Now if i am allowed to criticize a players performance, then i should be allowed to criticize a umpires performance too.

Rarely complain about umpires, because its a very difficult job, and one side is always going to question your umpiring no matter what, so I'm not going to 100% blame our loss on the umpiring, yes we could have won if one or two decisions were called correctly, but ultimately it is the players who lost the game.

I'm like a moth to a flame. Stupid me. Can't and won't change anything here. Umpires have an all but impossible job and I will always watch Carlton games through blue tinted glasses.

That said I find my perception of the "rules" particular at odds with Matthew Nicholls - No: 15 in yellow - or whatever cotrasting strip they choose. Just saying.

We surely recognise that we have a disproportionate value where frees/non-frees come about.

The value may well be something like 1.5:1 for the reasonable fan and maybe as far out as a 5:1 for a not so reasonable one when it comes to their team.
e.g. We get away with something that goes our way....we smile a little. It goes against us....there goes the remote. :)

What's new and why does this thread even exist?

Stop making sense! Its because we are passionate about the game - and misery likes company.

To provide an outlet for people who don't want to clutter other threads up with umpiring chat; to discuss potential solutions (even if the AFL would never go for some of them); to defend things people feel are unfair criticisms of umpires and umpiring.

Do you question the value of all the threads that deal in supposition?
