Should have been at Carlton, those bloody salary cap rorters..
Getting rid of prior opportunity means players are better off not going for the ball. This is not what we want.
The solution is just that when a player is tackled with no prior opportunity and the ball is locked in, for the umpire to ball it up. Quickly.
Not really sure why he'd have been going to them at all. The club has been wildly successful during his tenure, and his teams enjoyed such a good run with the umps that "free kick Hawthorn" memes flooded the internet for years.Maybe this was Clarko's path in his first few years as coach.....gets no results. Goes through media etc and gets results
This 1000% the stricter interpretation of HTB over the past decade is one of the main reasons we have so many rolling scums. Players are reluctant to take possession and make the play unless there is a clear opportunity to get rid of the ball effectively.
IMO my solution would be to ban a 3rd person into the tackling contest, make it a one on one and the player must dispose of the footy or be pinged.. But its the 3rd person in that creates the stoppage.

The problem with this is similar, what happens if 2 players tackle a player at the same time? Again, you don't want players going against instinct, standing back. Better off to just ball it up and get the game moving again.
How often does that happen, i would say its incredibly minimal.
I believe it is a running, kicking, handball and tackling game which IMO means that we need rules like "incorrect disposal" and "prior opportunity".
Only problem for me is that they need to be adjudicated consistently. There is a balance between over and under umpiring and, at the moment, they hit this area too infrequently.
As an example: I watched the round 4 game between St Kilda and Richmond and thought it was one of the best games I've seen all year. I remarked on this to my wife and said I didn't even notice the umpires because they let the game flow. I looked at the stats later to find that there were a total of 30 frees given (coincidentally with an even split).
Compare this to 56 frees and tell me why we should expect a free flowing game with that number.
Funnily enough, go back and watch a game from yesteryear...the same periods a lot of people bemoan how good the game was played.
I think you’ll find significantly more frees were paid on average than there is today. If an infringement is there pay it, shouldn’t matter how many infringements there are

Cripps gets touches he's a God. I get a few and I'm castigated. Castigated!

Stop the ones who can hit targets. Let the others butcher it and feast on turnovers.Watch Ed get pinged at every stoppage this week against Mitchell.
Not sure about that.. Mitchell is a quality player who accumulates plenty of the ball and feeds those on the outside. You stop it at the source and your halfway home.
He kept the freaking carShould have been at Carlton, those bloody salary cap rorters..
......after a goal. How bad is the restart these days? They also balled the ball up a lot quicker.
Time to get rid of the bounce, they have to throw it up after the balls up with the bounce down anyway.......after a goal. How bad is the restart these days?
Wingard'd drag him forward and beat him overhead. We'd be better sitting Willo on Wingard - as he's both tall enough and fast enough to keep up with him in the air and off the ground - and having Ed sit on O'Meara.
No keep the tradition, the bounce is imo a wonderful part of the great game.Time to get rid of the bounce, they have to throw it up after the balls up with the bounce down anyway.
Save the 30 seconds of everyone being bemused as the embarrassed umpire waves theatrically for players to resume their original positions, while retrieving the wayward Sherrin, and gesticulating which direction he or she will traverse once said ball is once again airborne.
Can't wait to get this baby revved up again tonight.
1 minute into the first qtr:
'the AFL have told the umpires not to give us free kicks'
'the umpires hate carlton'
'we are losing because of the umpires'
'No 10 umpire always hates carlton'
Same. Can't wait to get this baby revved up again tonight.
Umpires
Nathan Williamson (22), David Harris (24), Jacob Mollison (32)
for today's match.
Williamson has in the last two weeks really hurt us and hopefully gives us a fair match today.
