Soft free's I have come to expect but arent they paying incorrect disposal this year or something, there were at least 5 times a Brisbane player just dropped the pill in a tackle (and thats in the 2nd half because we rarely laid one in the first) and nothing was payed.

Was pissed with the first half but all up rapt with Goddard tonight and when the youngsters got inspired by some effort from the older heads they didnt look to bad, I just cant compare the first 1/2 to the 2nd though...the contrast is just too extreme

Servicable, you expect things to be questionable with the amount of interpretation that goes into decisions these days for things to be spot on perfect.

I query what's the go with dropping the ball though, there seemed to be a few instances where players were tackled initially, ball remaind and they pretty much flung their arms ou playing for a free thus dropping it that was called play on / HTM, or if on the ground simply placing the ball for a well positioned place kick.

Gone the way of the dodo has it?

And I wonder what would have happened had BJ's supergoal been counted, extra 3 points with our run might have pushed it to extra time at least. Seemed poor form to ask all the umps about the touched decision but leave that unaccounted for.

Was F***ing disgraceful.

I don't care about the NAB cup. I just care that those stupid pricks lost me money.

So many bulls*** free kicks in their back half in the last quarter!

We need to learn how to man the hell up when the game is on the line too!

Agree with the above. I couldn't believe it, actually made me LOL.

Last 5 centre bounces in the second quarter resulted in free kicks to the Lions which they turned 4 of them into direct goals haha.

Brisbane definitely got the rub of the green with the free kicks. It started in the first quarter with Ball being penalised for a head high tackle when the Lions player ducked his head and Ball still made the perfect tackle around his shoulders.
The last quarter was probably the worst though, with the Brisbane defenders getting a number of soft free kicks when they were the ones making the mistakes and getting caught under pressure. Those free kicks probably killed any chance we had of stealing a win.

Even Voss was laughing at a couple of them in the coaches box which showed how lucky they were.

Yeah, I thought it was more funny than anything else. Obviously if it was a regular season game I'd have been pissed off. It was mostly the issue that StFly described. The amount of times they took one of our players on, were tackled, and the ball came loose only for our player to be pinned for holding on was just bizarre.

You can understand the ball being spilled in a tackle where it just "pops out" but I believe that the one in regards to the HTM towards the end of the game the initial tackle was around the elbow area, ball remained in possession of the lion and as he was going backwards (towards our goals) he simply dropped it and was taken to ground as the ball spilled free, I didn't see the tackle initially displace the ball or the player attempting to hand pass to dispose of it correctly, which seemes to be the theme of the night to speed up the game since the beginning flood.

On a different note, I would personally like to see the backwarsd passing rule extended to 3/4 of the ground during the last 5 minutes (only allowed within the forward 50 for angle improvements) in the next NAB cup as really games shouldn't end with keepings off. If we're trying to speed the game up in the back half you might as well be consistent rather than allow for sides to still eat up the clock at the end of a quarter.

And somehow the poor manning up didn't lose you the game????

Meh, were pretty average. Has a lions mate eve agree, plus evenm Vossy was laughing in the coaches box. Dont matter, 1 goal in the first half lost it.

Who cares, NAB cup is meaningless. Happy we fought it out, umps will be umps.

It's not rocket science. If you get the ball, and have time to dispose of the ball, and then somebody tackles you before you dispose of the ball, it's a free. It doesn't matter how you didn't dispose of it - if it spills out of your hand onto the ground, that's dropping the ball; if you still have it, that's holding the ball; if you spill it out to somebody, it's incorrect disposal/throwing. What it sure as hell isn't is a free kick AGAINST us for holding the man, or "dangerous tackling" (what on earth was that?!?! Are we in Ozkick for heaven's sake?!?!).

And as I said in the other thread, these often happened at key points in the game, in key places in the game (like, say, I don't know, our FORWARD FIFTY!?!?!?!?).

Oh, and one of the umpires actually took one of our players (Eddy) out of the game, injuring him in a way that is potentially serious... noice one... we touch one of you, and get months of suspension, you moronically charge into one of ours, I can guess what's going to happen to you... nothing.

Fact is, we didn't deserve to win - we weren't even in it until the second half. But we don't need the umpire to make it harder. If I was a Brisbane supporter, I'd love the win, but I'd still be feeling a little cheapened by that. They didn't need that - they could have won the game on their merits, without that garbage.

We didn't deserve to win, don't mistake that the manning up coupled with the beginning flood and missed opportunities or no opportunities in a half of footy is reason enough that we didn't deserve to, but with that being said, the amount of questionable decisions which ended up impacting the end result was borderline ridiculous as has already been stated.

No, we lost the game because we kicked 1 goal in the first half.

Thanks for your contribution anyway.

Just a total lack of forward power. Milne contributed towards the end but too little too late.

Umpires gave Brisbane all the good frees and none of the bad. At least 3 soft free right infront of goal while Goddard needed to be smashed before the umpire even considered blowing the whistle infront of our goals.

Thank christ someone started a thread on this (thanks Jimmy).

We have obviously been working on quick transition with handball during the pre-season, but a number of handballs were just too slick for teammates in greasy conditions.

So this already made it a little hard to watch, along with poor old (young) Macca having to contest against two just about every time. I was hoping to get a better idea of how he was going but hard to tell after that.

But the umpiring made it almost unwatchable. To see that soft pr!ck Johnstone duck into a tackle and get a free, and when a guy just threw the ball away (KB style) a split second before Begley applied a very good tackle in the centre square, and when Henderson took the man on and slammed his fist into the ground in disappointment for being holding the ball (oh .. it's my free? Geez thanks ump!), and the half dozen or so head high contact ones which were invented in the AFL's latest crack down on something.

Then to hear the umpire talk about how the Saints were getting back into it, and how well Travis had been playing, I thought there was real danger of puke on the carpet (a la the "Funny Pictures" thread). Could've sworn the umpires were not meant to be watching the scores!!!

The AFL's only official reaction so far consists of a statement that it is always the player's responsibility to avoid contact with the umpires.

What next ?

Two weeks for Eddy for standing in the way - to be served after he has recovered from his injury (four weeks) ?

Why stop there, next NAB Cup;

Players upon a boundary throw in are not permitted to enter the centre corridor as this is for umpire running space to get to and form contests, any player deemed to be running in the guts will incur a quadruple boot to the shins by the officiating umpires at their discretion.

I figured the AFL adore stupid rules that are made for stupid reasons so there's a small chance they may adopt a similar one to that.:p

Just saw the footage of the goal umpire ending up on his arse in the Richo v Freo game because he was so obsessed with lining himself up correctly he forgot to watch the ball. They are not normal people.

Yes and it appears that getting back to their feet is not their first reaction. Strange units.

I was amazed that the AFL said they consulted the Geish (who was unavailable to the media) and he said that the umpire who took out Rob Eddy - by doing a crazy 35m run to get from one end of the pack to the other - was doing the correct thing.

Complete knob.
